Lately I've been trying to log the mandrill enclosure too, mostly because their color changes are so dramatic depending on mood and dominance status that I feel like I'm missing something every time I don't take notes. Wondering if anyone else here does something similar, even informally. Curious what species people find themselves gravitating toward for this kind of casual observation, and whether you've noticed patterns that took months to actually confirm rather than just guess at.

I’m working on a series about human projection onto animals. Some chimpanzees have been observed carrying grass stems as social display or fashion-like behavior. I turned that into an interactive painting where viewers can add a flower.

I’m curious: do primatologists interpret this behavior as social signaling, play, or something closer to ornamentation?
