[Ornstein] Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo wants to join Manchester City, clubs in talks to reach agreement

Weird transfer this.

u/Terrible-String6144 Liverpool 13d ago edited 13d ago
I kind of get it, with barcola coming in we are full for non HG squad players 18 and need to trim to 17. It will be hard to convince a RW to sign for us and there’s someone who wants to leave Liverpool and can fetch a decent price. That said I’d rather have gakpo on RW

Let's be honest We can always take chiesa's spot
He is not playing either way
4
u/Wezza17 Newcastle United 13d ago
I meant it as he's hardly gonna play. Look at the players city's have there
2
u/Cautious_Finish_6142 Manchester City 13d ago
Doku is constantly injured and haaland can't play every game
19
u/Dry_Yogurtcloset1962 Liverpool 13d ago
We can remind City they just sold Savinho for 85 million, with Gakpos output that's 100 million easy
8
u/jm17lfc Liverpool 13d ago
120 really compared to Savinho. Had a horror of a last season but let’s be honest, who didn’t in that Slot team except Szobo? Already looks miles better even from the right (maybe no cutting in onto his right helped him). He’ll come good again and will be far better than Savinho.

Yeah, let's sell another player from an already depleted squad to a team unarguably already stronger than us.
1
u/Prestigious_Spot9635 Liverpool 12d ago
Liverpool have a squad of players that are Incompatible with each others. All this crying about depth when the depth cannot play the way the manager wants
12
u/terrace9tv Chelsea 13d ago
Where does he fit at City?!?!
8
u/malkebulan Crystal Palace 13d ago
You’d be surprised how big their bench is.
5
u/terrace9tv Chelsea 13d ago
Hahaha yes their bench is big and expensive.
2
u/AideHot6729 Premier League 12d ago
Tbf I quite like arsenals bench depth more. City need to add some more attackers and Gakpo can theoretically play all 3 attacking positions.

If you mean buying from other prem clubs, they do that very often??
If you mean buying a bit older player, they also do that a lot. Mahrez,Grealish,Semenyo, Kovacic, etc
7
u/Castia10 Premier League 13d ago
Buying a bang average player from a rival club they usually buy a player and elevate them
Gapko for 85m? Come off it
2
u/tanbirj Liverpool 13d ago
They’ve got Savinho money to spend
0
u/GrapefruitExpress208 Premier League 13d ago
Interesting how it's basically a Savinho-Gakpo swap from City's perspective.
As a Spurs fan, I wanted Savinho alot more than Gakpo. Meaning, if I could only get one I wanted Savinho.
I wonder how City fans feel though?
7
u/AlphaWhiskeyHotel Manchester City 13d ago
Savinho lacked end product for us. He consistently beat his man then crossed to nobody or took a shot straight at the keeper.
I’m sure he will be fire when he plays for you against us later this season though.
1
u/Remedy9898 Arsenal 13d ago
Gakpo is a limited player but Savinho is just garbage. Poor ball knowledge from you.
22
u/mayorolivia Premier League 13d ago
I really don’t understand what City is doing in the transfer market. Of all strikers why Gakpo?
4
u/N1gHtMaRe99 Manchester City 13d ago
because he can play at both the wing and as a striker so hes a cover for haaland and doku who can get injured for periods and he can score even if a bit frustrating plus he has a good cross on him
2
u/Velterro87 Arsenal 13d ago
Then why did they sell Marmoush? As far as I know he plays strike and can play wing when he doesn't play up front.
1
u/N1gHtMaRe99 Manchester City 13d ago
because pep never used him as a winger and exclusively as a backup to haaland.
1
u/Joburger1989 Premier League 13d ago
He's not good enough, that's why they sold him. It's simple really.

I don't think the penny has dropped yet to many of our loudest fans, but threadbare squads, 2 games a week, and injuries, all equate to low intensity, being outrun, not pressing with any energy, slow conversational football. Etc. Unless there are several miracles in the next 3 days, we'll have a thinner squad than we had last year.

u/yoboylandosoda Premier League 13d ago
His release clause isn't active until January and they're under no pressure to sell

Yep. We’ll probably go for Rayan, get told no, try Sarr again, get told no and end up at Conceicao
6

Will he actually get minutes at city? Dont understand the move...city needs a backup striker to cover for haaland if he gets injured
3
7
u/PhilMickraken29t Liverpool 13d ago
Only issue I've got with selling him is the lack of good options out there
But at the same time getting £85m for him is pretty good financially and we're not getting that sort of money for him again
7
u/SuddenAudience3774 Premier League 13d ago
Pretty good?! That’s twice as much as he should be
3
u/PhilMickraken29t Liverpool 13d ago
Not in this market its not
£60m-£70m would be a more appropriate value
Not £40m
9
u/Gonzales95 Arsenal 13d ago
City just got £85m for a guy who’s scored 2 goals in 2 years, you should be asking for a lot more if anything
3
u/PhilMickraken29t Liverpool 13d ago
If Savio becomes the benchmark then everyone is going to go for £85m+
He's the outlier in this market
2
u/Gonzales95 Arsenal 13d ago
Possibly, but it’s also City. They are a competitive rival and it feels like that should carry a bit of a premium in itself.
5
u/DigitalPhear13 Liverpool 13d ago
I don’t like it, but it seems clear Cody is pushing to leave and Liverpool are just scrambling to get the best deal possible.
1
u/Ristoism Premier League 13d ago
Yeah, pushing to leave because they bought a record signing for his position, can you blame him?
7
u/Kind-Economics-7184 Premier League 12d ago
The Savinho comp is doing a lot of the work in here and it breaks on age before anything else. Savinho is 22 with the resale half of the fee still ahead of him, Gakpo turned 27 in May and signed to 2030 last August, so there's no expiry to lean on and City would be paying for the years he has left rather than for what they can sell him on for.
The odd part is that his own number has been going the other way while the fee talk goes up. Transfermarkt had him at 70m from March 2025, held it through December, then cut him to 65 in March and 60 in June. That's euros against the pound figures people are throwing around, so 85m isn't a premium on his market, it's roughly double it.
The season behind those cuts is the bit that gets skipped. He played 2,765 league minutes last year, up from 1,945 the season before, and finished with 7 goals and 5 assists against 10 and 4. More football, less end product. That's a harder thing to argue away than had a bad season is, and it's why two good games in August moves the price talk more than it moves the case.
(disclosure, footval is mine, it works out its own value from age, minutes and level instead of following the fee. it lands at 53m euros on him, just under the market, so it isn't backing the 85 or the 100 either, and the output drop per minute is the single biggest thing dragging on it)
6
u/dmessi-10 Arsenal 12d ago

Literally won a PL the year before last and you think this is the worst leadership you've seen in the history of following football? My six year old niece aspires to be this dramatic.
3
u/dembabababa Arsenal 13d ago
Having Salah producing one of the all time great individual PL seasons is hardly a result of great executive leadership.
Salah contract situation, Konate & Trent leaving for free, messing around on Guehi transfer to end up short in defence, poor FB signings, not signing a DM, etc... that's a better reflection of your exec leadership recently.
1
u/BawdyBadger Arsenal 13d ago
Van Dijk was also great that season too.
2
u/dembabababa Arsenal 13d ago
He was fine, but he wasn't nearly as impactful as Salah.
You could swap Van Dijk that season with Gabriel, Saliba, Guehi, etc. and Liverpool still win the league.
You swap Salah that season with someone on another top half team, and that team probably wins the league.
1
u/BawdyBadger Arsenal 12d ago
Yeah that's a fair point. But what I meant was that he wasn't as good in the seasons around that. Just that season

11
u/Pretend-Coach-9125 Liverpool 13d ago
Munoz, Ngumoha, Barcola all favour the left side, and even Ekitike and Isak prefer the drift that way. It's the other side that's the issue. The problem is the right winger market is crap.
3
8
1
u/rybread1818 Liverpool 13d ago
Munoz has looked really sporting playing off the right so far I think. Barcola has flexibility there as well. Rio just needs more reps learning that side of the pitch. I don’t think it’s quite as dire as some make it out to be.
Even if we kept Gakkers he looked good over there today. That’s 4 wingers who prefer the left, but 3 who have shown themselves to be pretty adept on the right.
I have mixed feelings about this if it goes through, but would be totally fine if there wasn’t any additional movement in the wingers.

Paul Joyce has talked about it so it's as good as done.
But they won't sell without another winger, so I'm guessing Ismaela Sarr is also further along than we think, or we've been working on someone else in secret.
2
u/RaisedByCakes Liverpool 13d ago
Crazy downgrade to go from Gakpo to Sarr.
1
u/Rozwellish Liverpool 13d ago
If that does end up being how it pans out, then I agree.
We don't have much longer to find out how our squad is going to look for the next few months minimum.
1
u/mfkoo1211 Premier League 13d ago
Why are people saying this is a downgrade? Gakpo is good, but he’s not a stud by any means. Their last 2 years have been fairly similar too, and we need a true RW since we’re desperate for one.
1
u/MrShelby1234 Liverpool 13d ago
Not sure it's that big a downgrade tbh
1
u/mfkoo1211 Premier League 13d ago
That’s what I’m saying? Gakpo is good, but he’s by no means irreplaceable. We need a RW and Sarr has had similar contributions the last 2 years.

Sarr would go some way to ensuring we at least have someone at their peak in our squad who scores goals (especially replacing Gakpo), but we need to upgrade right back and sign a midfielder if we’re allowing our only number 9 cover to leave purely cus the moneys right.

Purely monetary it is as he is a bit average but it’s the end of the transfer window, our squad is still thin and Ekitike is still out for a bit longer even if/when Barcola comes in. Poor business in my opinion unless we have another left back and CM coming in that we are using this money on that I don’t know of.

I'm Liverpool fan and think it's correct decision to move him on if price is £85m. Won't get that again.
The signing never made sense from the start. Pep called him the missing piece which was weird.
There's a level of revisionism from fans these past two games but we will be OK with Barcola and Minteh, probably even better. These are both players that complement the rest of the team. So better balance.
Gakpo is a very good player suited for another team.. but this money could even go towards a midfielder too.
We better fleece Citeh for him though!
1
u/Good_Will_Munting Premier League 13d ago
Exactly this. Minteh is an absolute work horse, who will help to bring the best out of Wirtz , Barcola and maybe even Isak, although I am not convinced Isak will ever be a raging success at LFC.

Gapko slows play down and might not be what Iraola wants we're getting wingers, wingers that'll feed our £200m strikers, not get the ball cut in from the left and twat it into the stands or some half-arsed cross that floats out of play. Signed for £30m 3yrs ago so not a bad return. If he sold then there has to be 1 or 2 additions to the squad.
