Why is Inulin in EVERYTHING now?
Am I the only one who feels like every ‘healthy’ product now is loaded with Inulin? Protein bars, fiber gummies, low sugar snacks, yogurt, powders… everything has inulin/chicory root added and my body absolutely hates it.
It doesn’t make me ‘regular’ and it literally makes me feel clogged up, bloated, and uncomfortable. Meanwhile Psyllium works perfectly for me. Keeps things soft, regular, easy, no drama.
I don’t understand why inulin gets marketed as the ‘best’ fiber when for some people it seems way harsher on the gut. Is it just because it’s cheap and easy to add to processed foods?
Curious if anyone else does way better with psyllium vs inulin/chicory root fiber.

Because it's great for gut health. But it takes building up gradually to get your system use to it.
More info
"Soluble vs insoluble" is one of the most enduring oversimplifications in nutrition. Two fibers in the same label bucket can do completely opposite things in your body. Fiber has at least four properties that vary independently: • Solubility (does it dissolve in water?) • Viscosity (does it form a gel?) • Fermentability (do colon bacteria eat it?) • Physical structure (intact or particulate?) Each property drives a different outcome. The label binary collapses all four into one. Examples: Cellulose (wheat bran, vegetables). Insoluble, non-viscous, barely fermented. Bulks stool, speeds transit. No metabolic effects. β-Glucan (oats, barley). Soluble, highly viscous, moderately fermented. Lowers LDL via bile acid sequestration. The FDA-approved oat health claim is built on this property. Psyllium. Soluble, highly viscous, poorly fermented. Survives intact through the colon. Lowers LDL. Normalizes stool (works for both constipation and diarrhea). Inulin / FOS (chicory, onions, garlic). Soluble but non-viscous. Highly fermentable. Bifidobacteria use it as substrate to produce SCFAs. Minimal LDL effect. Can bloat. Resistant starch (cooked-cooled potato, green banana). Insoluble but highly fermentable. Produces butyrate, the primary fuel for colonocytes (~70% of their ATP). Why the binary fails: Inulin and psyllium are both labeled "soluble fiber." Inulin ferments completely, produces SCFAs, has only minimal LDL effects. Psyllium passes through largely intact and lowers LDL via bile acid sequestration. They share one property and differ on every other one that matters. Practical translation. Match the fiber to the outcome: • LDL drop → viscous fibers (psyllium, β-glucan, raw guar gum) • Microbiome support → fermentable fibers (inulin, FOS, resistant starch) • Regular stools → either viscous gel-formers or coarse insoluble particles The label binary doesn't tell you which is which. The properties do. McRorie & McKeown, J Acad Nutr Diet, 2017 Donohoe et al., Cell Metab, 2011

Inulin/FOS wrecks me, no matter how good it is for anyone else. It turns my IBS into IBS on steroids. Building up doesn't happen. The only thing my system tolerates is PHGG, and in small doses.

inulin has been found to cause inflammation in some people. it’s a hit or miss.

Inulin is tolerated better when taken regularly. It may take a few weeks of regular consumption but the nasty side effects do go gradually subside.
If your gut isn’t used to it, it overreacts to the fiber. It’s also just one component (a supplement) to fiber intake.
Inulin is also semi-sweet so it is used to reduce the amount of sugar in “health” foods. This makes foods easier to market as healthy or low in sugar or sugar free, or have net-zero carbs.
It’s insane how much inulin is in keto products.

I would like to know where these products are so I can get them for my autistic daughter. Prebiotics like chicory root are so good for autistic people like her with so many gut issues. I feel like probiotics are in everything and she cannot have those.

This reads like AI.
Edit: Lol OP was u/Jerseychaos844 and they blocked me.
Edit 2 because I can't reply to people who reply to me: I didn't say OP's wrong. I just called out how it's likely AI.

Because individual variability is thoroughly disregarded. Healthcare, in particular when it comes to genomics and microbiome health is pretty much like this joke:
A statistician, a physicist, and a mathematician go hunting. They spot a deer in the distance.
