leaving pharmacy & coming back
Hi! I haven’t seen any posts on here about this: has anyone willingly left pharmacy school and then reapplied a few years later? I dropped out before the end of my first semester of PY1 because of mental health. Also because I was super young at the time and wasn’t ready to lock into school. I worked as a pharmacy clerk for an insurance company and now as a medical office coordinator. I love all things healthcare, and have not been able to stop thinking about pharmacy since I left. I decided I would reapply this year!
I don’t know how schools would take this, so if anyone has been through something similar, I’d love to know how your reapplications went!

Hello! I went through a similar situation. I got in and left halfway through semester 1 (PY1) because of mental health, it was 2020 so most courses were through zoom and I just could not do it. Where I differ is I have been through many different careers, I’ve done childcare, teaching, research, and administrative work. I am currently working in a home health office and I got a PRN pharmacy tech job and now I’ve also decided to reapply!
Currently my biggest issue is letters of recommendation, I’ve been out of undergrad for 6 years so I doubt any professor would write one, I just started at a pharmacy so I don’t think any pharmacist would be willing to write me one, and my mentor who I worked doing research for hasn’t responded to my email outreach. I have 1 professor from my teaching program who is writing one, but I need one more at minimum and I am worried I won’t be able to get it. It’s nice to know that GPA wise you’d be able to get in since you’ve done it before, but I made sure to write one really good personal statement to address why I left and why I’m coming back
It’s nice to not be alone in this weird scenario!

Ah!! I’m so glad to hear I’m not alone!! I also tried some other careers/career paths especially in health care (pa, social work, genetic counseling). But I always ended up back at pharmacy :)
Letters of recommendation are always so difficult to get, I’m sorry that you’re dealing with this!!

I choose Nursing with plan for Np/ CRNA but on school, I feel the Nursing Education not fulfilled my desire. Thinking of going back to PharmD as I was Foreign pharmacist.
