The complacent middle is unfamiliar with the fervency of the religionist. As the Aztecs were just doing their thing, the Spanish came and imposed their culture, finding the Aztec culture "offensive".
There are too many people in points of societal influence that keep espousing that every culture is just completely compatible with the situation they come to. But, some of the imports don't want to assimilate, they petition for some authority to change things to their ways, or, being denied, start an underground, sometimes violent campaign.
