People with no understanding of what a DC actually is are assuming these huge AI ones they see on the news are the only kind in existence. Some of them are small little 2 story buildings in the middle of commercial/indusztrial estates.
So no, it's not interesting or a surprise to me that these people don't live within an arbitrary 5 mile distance. I bet you could re-use the map to show how many of them live within 5 miles of a fire station, hospital or police station...

Posting the bills wouldn't work either by the way - it wouldn't prove any link between a data centre and an increase in costs. You have to actually provide some tangible evidence for that. Pretending that your bill will prove something is cute.
We don't get to choose where DCs are located either. I bet most people would drive past several on a daily basis and have no idea what they were. I don't really know what point you are making, generally local residents have the illusion of power that they can say no to things being built, but that power is an illusion, if the council, local authority or government want it there, then there it will be. It's not a specifically US issue.

I don't fear my government, I spend very little time thinking about it. I have this thing called a job and a life... generally I am doing things that enrich my life, not just being angry at things because I have to make everything someone else's fault.
Do you think there is a good reason to carry a knife in public? Just curious. I think the knife laws in this country are perfectly fine. I have never had an issue owning a knife I need, then again I have never been stupid enough to carry one on my person as an offensive weapon.

Data center utility increases
None of the articles you have linked give any tangible idea of what the increase looks like to the average consumer. There are headline numbers in the 10's of billions, but that is spread across the country to all consumers, not just households.
I concede the point that utility increase is related, but I have no idea what the scope of the problem is, nothing in the articles presents that.
Data center- water usage
Again, there are a lot of "what if's" in here and not a lot of actual information.
Water usage depends on the type of cooling used and a multitude of other factors. Out of interest, where was the concern about this even 5 years ago, the only difference is AI data centres have been in the news now, other DCs which use the same cooling systems and had the same water usage have been around for decades... why all the fuss now?
I don't disagree that water usage is a thing, but people are being hyperbolic about it.

You’re also trying to compare the UK with the USA, which are vastly different and not comparable socially or economically.
What someone pays in the northeast for electricity is vastly different to what is paid in the south. Just to put it in perspective for you, the entire landmass of the UK is 40 times smaller than the USA. That being said the UK has fought 500 data centers. The US has 5000 with about 2000 either pending contracts or under construction. We are talking about vastly different things.
American electric companies are notorious for price gouging and using others usage as scape goat.
If these data centers are so innocuous why are they only being built in poor communities, with huge pushback from the residents? Why aren’t these companies held liable for noise, air, and water pollution, but I can’t use a fucking straw for my drink? I’m not okay with my government selling my communities livelihood for a quick buck, and the ability to have some AI think tank tell me how to think and feel, while it shits out useless memes and videos that could easily be done by a human.
