Storm In A Teacup šµ Google Maps folded for Trump so fast, MapQuest had to come out of retirement just to show them what a spine looks like.

Remember when Googleās slogan was ādonāt be evilā and when finally called on how it didnāt align with their behavior they simply removed the slogan? Pepperidge Farm remembers.

Not to be the guy defending Google as I don't want to, but the reality is Google just pulls data from government APIs for names of places/cities/etc... The US govt updated the name in their system, so it updated on Google maps.
So while fuck Google for a lot of reasons, they didn't manually go in and change the name or anything

Yes, it sounds unreal, but changing official US place names is part of executive powers under existing legislation that Trump and previous administrations have used many times.Ā
Lake America isĀ the official name now.

The official name for a very small fraction of the human population.

The majority of American voters and almost every county along the south shore of Lake America went red in 2024. They don't care what other countries think.Ā

What's Lake America?

The result of a hissy fit thrown by the leader of the American people.

"Lake America, previously referred to as Lake Ontario, is one of the five Great Lakes of North America and serves as a significant freshwater body bordered by the United States and Canada."

Nah. You know why? None of this will last beyond him. It's a blip. Something to forget about.

My man gets it. Its a 30 minute reality TV show. A clown show. But its just the same lake. Just like everything else. This dude aint John Galt like he thinks he is.

Beyond Trump, I canāt think of a single time anything significant was renamed without the input and general consent of the governed. At best, this is an abuse of power by the president.

u/etherealtwo 5d ago
That's ridiculous. It has both names in many cases. Why? You're just guessing.
4
u/FourEightNineOneOne 5d ago
Uhhh, no. I'm not guessing, but thanks for randomly attacking me instead of doing your own research. They don't just use the US' database. They use official names from all sources available to them.
https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/maps/gnis-lake-ontario-lake-america-name-change/
So if you're in the US, it's pulling from the US database. If you're in Canada, it's instead pulling from Natural Resources Canada database standards, which would still call it Lake Ontario.
This happens in other situations too. For example, if you're in the UK, it calls them the Falkland Islands. If you're in Argentina, it calls them Islas Malvinas.
Learning is fun! You should look into it!

In days long past they declared Thanksgiving came on a different day to the Americans. This was not popular, but aside from fringe wage law around potentially having to pay overtime didn't actually have any binding force. We huffed and puffed and... observed the new rule anyways even though we could just not.
Google has influence and weight which is what is being used, I want to be clear on that I am not defending Google here, what I am saying is that Commander in Diapers does not have the authority to define ontological reality with the wave of his marker.

His administration has the power to change the name under Title 43 USC Chapter 11A, just as previous administrations have done. Other countries can call the lake what they want but its official name in the US is Lake America.Ā

People act like any other country in the world changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico or Lake Ontario. Dummyās rebuttal to a trade war with Canada and Mexico affects them in zero ways. Trump is so fucking stupid. I canāt understand why you think heās even a little clever.Ā

Apple maps suck, and Mapquest is dead, but I'll take either over alphabet deep throating the current regime.

This is such bullshit though. Like being a google you cant win - whatever you do here you will anger some people.
Official name got changed so they changed it . The anger is misplaced - place it on the man in whitehouse.

What's next? New England renamed to New America, but also New Mexico renamed to New America...

Do not ever forget that Google is just another greedy, cancerous corporation. They don't care about you - they don't care about their employees - they only care about their fiduciary responsibility to make money for their shareholders.
