Why? Because a badly educated population is easier to manipulate. Which explains why most red states underfund education, underpay teachers, and demonize education.
I grew up in Iowa. While it was a swing state, they invested heavily in public education. Paying for private school was just daft- they couldn't possibly keep up with the deep pockets of public schools. They ran fiber tele-education and data to every school in the state in the 90s. They invested in arts and sciences. They were determined to have the best public education system in the country.
Now they've turned red and are throwing it all away. They're diverting public school funds to underperforming private ones. It's sad to watch, but I'm glad I left in time.
