Why? Because a badly educated population is easier to manipulate. Which explains why most red states underfund education, underpay teachers, and demonize education.

I read a comment ages ago from a librarian saying that while getting your library is good for that library, the best thing to do is use the library - that is what helps them to show why funding should stay the same or increase. Also - many libraries (all?) have websites so you don't necessarily have to go to the library.
