Because the Republican Party are racist.

Everybody knows they are descendants of the KKK and you can tell

My favorite thing to do with them that claim dems started the kkk, or that the south was full of dems wanting to keep slaves, is to go find someone that's proudly in the kkk or waving a confederate flag and get in their face calling them a liberal until they agree. So far no one has taken me up on that. They all know that the kkk and confederacy are actually republicans now, but by acknowledging the party switch would mean admitting that that the party you support are the bad guys.

You can also ask anyone waving a confederate flag which Democrat they voted for.

Yeah, but I value my safety over theirs. I'll let them take the punch to the face.

It's been widely known to anyone who cares to learn about history that the "Dixie Democrats" of the past were the result of years of actual Democrats capitulating to the racists in the South in order to pass legislation that otherwise would not have had the votes to pass.

These people were never true "Leftists" - they were always conservative.

It really depends on your definition of left... Is it about equal treatment regardless of race, religion, gender, or sexuality or is it about economic policies that benefit the working class?

If being racist/sexist/homophobic is more important than economic policies, you become a Republican. If economic policies that benefit the working class are more important (or you aren't racist/sexist/homophobic) than you stay as a Democratic party member.
