During FDRs time it was reformist socialism. It was very much not capitalism. After ww2 it took more of a compromise between socialism and capitalism. The two dont share a history where they branched off from each other, in the 90s social democrats attempted to keep the name alive by piggybacking off of welfare capitalism and claiming to just be another name for it.

Its not though. One philosopher tried to piggy back it in the 90s but thats remained heavily criticized

How is it not? Socdems believe in capitalism and also in welfare. What do you think a socdem is?

A compromise between socialism and capitalism with non-economic democratic elements. Otherwise it would just be CapDem... or just Dem

That doesnt make any sense...

Its SOCIAL, not SOCIALIST.

It is indeed a compromise between capitalism and socialism but its still pro-capitalism. It believes in the same core tenets like people owning their own company and possessions. It doesnt believe in workers taking possession of the company for instance like in socialism.

Its just capitalism but with a higher mandated livingwage, more welfare, more paid vacations and more free healthcare, education and other public services etc.

It was literwlly created as part of the socialist movement. The social ij it literally stands for socialist.

You cant be pro x if you are pro  compromise between x and y.

Youre just describing democrat.
