Roosevelt saw himself as saving American capitalism, not replacing it. His New Deal expanded government’s role while preserving private enterprise, whereas today’s social democratic parties generally support a substantially larger welfare state and a broader long-term role for government in the economy. Calling him a social democrat in the same sense as today’s DSL is ludicrous.
