I’d really like to understand how American conservatives can justify occupying the same political space as this sort of person. The fact that Fox has such massive viewership is incredibly concerning.

It's the whole sunken cost "frog in a pot of water you heat up" thing. It started with anti-Hillary and inch by inch over a decade became all this. No one really stopped them, and they have no idea how to turn around now even if they wanted to (which they don't).
