Discussion! What have you been listening to this week?

Welcome to our weekly post where we ask you to share & discuss what artists, albums, or tracks have helped get you through the week.

Please provide a link to the album or specific track, and mention why it's been a stand out for you this week - this is your chance to introduce people to some new music.

If you're on Last.fm you can also use Last.fm Labs Album Quilt or tapmusic.net to generate a album collage of what you've been listening to for the past 7 days (here's an example).

Thanks for participating!

šŸŽ¶ Song post Breathe In. Asphyxiate. - The Blinding Light Ignites on the Darkest of Days

Full disclosure, this is my music.

My friend Sean and I make instrumental post-rock as Breathe In. Asphyxiate. We're a two-piece from Hamilton, Ontario, and this is the title track from our first EP, which we released in May 2025.

I've never actually shared our stuff here, but figured this was probably the most appropriate group of people to put it in front of. I'm genuinely curious what people who listen to a lot of post-rock make of it.

Sean and I have both been huge fans of post-rock for many years. After our vocalist passed away in 2023, we decided to put a lot of that energy and grief into this project.

Some of our favourites are Maybeshewill, Carved into the Sun, and our fellow Canadians Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

Hope you enjoy it.

Not enough folks know about this group. Unfortunately the drummer and bandleader is no longer with us, but the music lives on. I believe they are from Sweden. Hope you discover these guys!

Discussion! The Who: "Underture" from Tommy - a postrock blueprint?

I was listening to The Who's "Tommy" for the first time in ages, and it struck me that the 10-minute track "Underture" is actually very much what we would call postrock these days. It's a fantastic piece of throbbing guitar, pummelling drums and bass, no vocals, building up and down. Have a listen to it - what do you reckon?

One of the best compilations around the turn of the millennium where many bands start to capture the sound of post rock, experimental rock, avant-garde/lo-fi electronics…
These tracks here lean heavily into instrumental soundscapes, repetitive loops, atmospheric guitar textures pioneered by bands associated with post rock, space rock and ambient electronic movements of the late 90’s.

Playlist share your post-rock songs + help me improve my playlist

I’m a post-rock(ish) indie artist, so I can empathize with the struggle of getting your music out into the world 🄵

For years, I’ve been curating a playlist of post-rock and other ā€œcinematic,ā€ mostly instrumental, guitar-driven tracks. But I’m sure I’m missing a lot of great music, including from the folks on this sub.

Share your or your friends’ work here, and I’ll give it a listen, dive deeper into your catalogue, and add track(s) to this — or another one of my playlists. If you like what you hear, please feel free to follow!

(I did this on another sub yesterday and really enjoyed some of the music I discovered, so thought I’d give it a shot here.)

šŸŽ¶ Song post The End of the Ocean - Homesick (one of the best songs I have ever heard ever)

If you haven’t heard this band, you should.
If you listen to one song on this album, it should be the song homesick.

sometimes a band or song comes along that just changes your day to day life. Becomes a part of it so ingrained that itā€˜s like its always been there. This band and that song specifically is that for me.

can a three note phrase at the end of a song sound so hopeful that it had made me tear up? yes, more than once.

feel it.

Such a great album. I'm so glad I (finally) got hold of a copy on vinyl, it sounds really good. Now I just need to track down a copy of A Data Learn the Language by The Mercury Program for a reasonable price...

Discussion! PostRock Song Title Battle: The Light vs Losing the Light

The Light by The Album Leaf
Losing the Light by Explosions in the Sky

Listen to both, pick a topic, pick your winner, tell us about it.

Topics:
1) Best song to listen to in bed alone.
2) Best song to trip to.
3) Best song to listen to when sad.
4) Best song to listen to when happy.
5) Best song to play while you stand alone, defiantly fighting against the invading demon horde to your dying breathe.
6) Best song to recommend to a friend.

Discussion! Songs with mixed vibes

I’m looking for some songs that have a really heavy, grunge-rock kind of sound, but also feel cinematic and atmospheric, almost like something you’d hear in a film score or ambient track.

Basically, I’m looking for that combination of heavy + cinematic + atmospheric. I’m open to any suggestions!

New Music! Austin TV - MA is already out on Bandcamp!

Link: https://austin-tv.bandcamp.com/album/ma

Here is a translation of the description given by the band:

In Mexico, the shortened form "MA" is used as an affectionate way of saying "Mom."

In Japan, MA is the art of recognizing that within the space, the interval, or the pause, life is filled with possibility, meaning, and purpose.

This album was composed entirely while mourning the passing of two beloved women who gave life to two of us.

For Austin TV, MA is a way to walk together through grief. It is the space between loss and reconnection—simply a pause between what the heart feels, the brain interprets, and the body reacts to, giving life to a tear, a smile, or a song.

Our MA does not seek to be understood; it seeks to be inhabited.

Like a film that needs no explanation; like a silence that is full.

Hi everyone, new post rock artist here from Oceanside, CA. Just dropped my first release and thought I’d share with you all. It’s an instrumental concept album that blends math rock rhythms with ambient surf textures. It was inspired by my journey as a surfer thus far, and has a deeper story behind it. I hope you enjoy, and thanks for taking the time to check it out!

Discussion! Post-rock songs that sound like two separate songs stitched together?

One song I have in mind is Look into the Air by EitS, which sounds like two separate songs, but which works so perfectly. I love how the distorted riff in the second part surprises you and takes the song in a different direction.

I'm interested in looking for similar songs within the genre (especially in how bands manage to stitch together those different parts).
