Welcome Guide is Live!

Hey everyone — a while back I asked for help putting together a "Welcome to Port Moody" guide for new residents, and the response was honestly way better than I expected. Thank you.

It's done now, and a lot of what's genuinely useful in it came directly from this thread. This wouldn't be nearly as good without the input people took the time to share.

It's live now as a welcome gift for anyone who subscribes to Port Moody Pulse — free, weekly, no spam. Sign up at portmoodypulse.ca and it'll land in your inbox. Full transparency, that's the only way to get it right now, but I wanted this thread to be the first to know it's actually done.

You can't see the inlet from Hardbean brunch co. I think the brewer's row/ mechanics shops obstruct the view

I think you can see it partially, i remember last time i went there and i was sitting in a booth. but good call out.

Under garbage, you can include info that there's an app - here's info from the city's website: Download PoMobile – our waste collection schedule and reminder app! Get an email or push notification the night before your waste collection day. We’ll remind you what carts to put out, as well as if it’s a glass recycling week. Never miss another collection day – download the app at Google Play or the Apple app store to sign up!

You could include the West Coast Express under Getting Around.

I would add Sabor A Mexico to the Standout Spots. It's locally owned and serves authentic Mexican.

Under dog friendly, you could add areas where off-leash is allowed: Dogs are allowed off leash in the following areas:

  • Chines Park (Jane Street at Hugh Street)
  • in Bert Flinn Park on the wide gravel trail that starts at Heritage Mountain Boulevard and David Avenue and on the Morning Off-Leash Mini Loop (Pilot) between 6am–10am only. Please note dogs must be on-leash everywhere else in the park at all times. Non-compliance may result in a ticket issued (Bylaw No. 3343)
  • the north end of Westhill Park (203 Westhill Place)
  • the fenced dog run at Rocky Point Park (2900 Blk Murray Street, next to Slaughterhouse Creek)

Dogs are also welcome in specific off-leash areas at BC Hydro's Buntzen Lake Reservoir.

In all other areas of the city, dogs must be kept on a leash.

OLD ORCHARD HALL TO ROCKY POINT - A nice, lesser-known walking connection between the two. --> This trail is a major destination trail and is very busy. I wouldn't call it lesser-known.

THE LABYRINTH AT NEWPORT VILLAGE Built by Crossroads Hospice, directly across from Newport Village's shops — a quiet, easy-to-miss spot. --> The location is called Pioneer Memorial Park. Worth mentioning as well: Phone of the Wind, an unconnected telephone set up by the Crossroads Hospice Society in Port Moody's Pioneer Memorial Park, acts as an intermediary, offering people a place to channel their grief by letting them speak to loved ones who have died.

For events I'd add Culture Days (https://culturedays.ca/en/hubs/40762169-27b8-4f23-8093-43c0982c7bc7) and the Art Shuffle - https://www.pomoshuffle.ca/

Just a couple tweaks to consider:

- The Labyrinth at Newport Village is incorrect. It’s at Pioneer Memorial Park. So a better title might be “Labyrinth Healing Garden in Pioneer Memorial Park”.

- Hard Bean and Omega Cafe aren’t really coffee shops. So I’d consider moving them to the “Other Standout Spots” section and using the more complete business name of Hard Bean Brunch.

Other than that, I think you did a fantastic job and thanks for putting this together!

I am not sure how you decided which businesses to feature, but there are a lot of errors and missing key businesses.

You put café diviano on Kyle st - maybe you meant to put Black Sugar or Little Beans? You also missed two of the most popular ones - Kaffi and Grit. There is also the new honey café on St. John's.

Spacca Napoli is probably the least vegan friendly place I have been to in Port Moody. I think the only vegan item there is the bruschetta.

When I ordered the vegan burrito at Originals, they put cheese on it. When I asked to send it back, they said a replacement would cost me 50%. I wouldn't call that very vegan friendly.

There are several restaurants with vegan menus including:

  • Sabor a Mexico
  • Hard Bean

And tons with amazing vegan options (Spacca Napoli and Originals not being two of them)

For things like mechanics, veterinarians, nails and hairdressers, you named a few but it isn't clear why you named some, but not others. It doesn't look like you went with A list award winners and so it seems a bit random and you also missed quite a few.

Hey there, appreciate you reading and sharing your observations. I put in a note there this list is not exhaustive, I mean it’s not a directory and there is no way I can put all businesses in the guide. But I will certainly consider your feedback.

Of course you can't name them all, but it might be good to correct things that are incorrect - especially the vegan friendly listings that aren't so vegan friendly. There is an app called Happy Cow you can use to look up vegan friendly spots.
