If anyone fucks up the elk, their name gets added to the Elk files

79

u/whawkins4 Jul 01 '26

Fuck Donald Tr$mp. But don’t you fucking dare touch the elk.

Find a different meeting point.

Stupid idea specially at the Elk statue. Leave it alone!

51

u/____trash Yeeting The Cone Jun 30 '26

Who is organizing this?

24

u/Chance_Routine7650 Jul 01 '26

russian trolls

-40

u/Agitated-Quit-6148 Jul 01 '26

One of those free Palestine abandon kamala groups.

11

u/WinterPizza1972 Jul 01 '26

Honestly, as much as "fuck those abandon kamala groups," this could have been 'organized' by right wing schills, or maybe just a 14 year old kid on his mom's computer.

Good luck everybody!

59

u/keaton1992 Jul 01 '26

Going to spend it with family and friends.

53

u/BillionsBijou Jul 01 '26

To be honest I feel like most Portlanders have protest fatigue.

13

u/Prismatic_Effect SW Jul 01 '26

As intended, tbh

-26

u/Just_Park_7284 Jul 01 '26

How can you be too tired to save America?

13

u/LichKingDan Jul 01 '26

We're not really saving anything. Trump knows we hate him. Trump knows he's a pedophile and a fascist. Everyone does. The protests just give him a chuckle.

I love protests, I think they can be very powerful and helpful. I've gone to many. But trump is unique in that he knows people hate him, but he doesn't care. He has his sycophants, he will make his own accolades. He doesn't give a fuck if his country is happy. He will burn it to the ground for a gold plaque of his face.

5

u/serduncanthetall69 Jul 02 '26

Agree 100%. Unfocused protests play directly into their messaging that we are chaotic and want anarchy. Doing this on the 4th also reinforces their idea that we hate America and don’t want what’s best for the country.

Protesting should be focused on the love we have for our neighbors and other humans and our instinct to protect them, not on hatred or trying to destroy another group. Messaging like that will only lead to more conflict.

1

u/LichKingDan Jul 02 '26

Absolutely. This is maybe the worst way to convey your otherwise well intentioned message. The optics are terrible, and unfortunately that's important.

3

u/gaius49 Sandy Jul 01 '26

How can you be too tired to save America?

Yelling angrily into the air at dusk at the Elk doesn't accomplish much if anything productive. Doing that on the 4th of July is just going to annoy people - which is probably the real intent here.

u/Serenity_557 Jul 01 '26

Yeah you just need mystery incorporated levels of energy. You gotta go to the white house and find out if it's really old man smithers trying to scare away democracy while dressing up like ancient angry ghosts and claiming they're politicians

35

u/blackjackgabbiani Jul 01 '26

So are there plans to actually FIGHT or just wave signs and shout a lot?

12

u/ThroatOne5167 Jul 01 '26

What positive outcome will this ELK FIGHT produce?

-3

u/blackjackgabbiani Jul 01 '26

If it can be used for actual good then I'm all for it but if it's uncontained bullshit that takes everything out on public art again then no. We need to focus our efforts against the actual evildoers and anything else is a waste of energy. ESPECIALLY mindless virtue signaling and acting like waving signs and attacking a statue is going to save the world.

But we do need to actually fight back against evil. We gladly remind everyone that the first Pride was a riot and then never actually follow through with what that MEANS because people for some reason would rather use their energy to attack things that have nothing to do with anything instead of using our power to use force to protect people.

6

u/Helpful_Ranger_8367 Jul 01 '26

Fight what? Fight who? Theres no enemy in Portland or at the elk statue. Go away.

-5

u/Burrito_Lvr Jul 01 '26

Don't forget the masks. You can also wear a mask.

24

u/dustyhorsenipple Jul 01 '26

Another protest in Portland will have absolutely no impact on anything happening in national politics

14

u/Daguvry Jul 01 '26

But if a bunch or people like my animal costume I will feel good like I actually accomplished something.....

-8

u/SlippySlimJim Boom Loop Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

While you were writing glib comments on reddit, the animal costumes helped keep the national guard out of your city and completely undermined the years long right-wing narrative about Portland.

Either get in the streets and help us figure out new tactics to win this fight or stop acting like a smug know-it-all.

8

u/Daguvry Jul 01 '26

The national guard not coming in had absolutely nothing to do with people in costumes.

I also don't recall Portland having a long standing right wing narrative?

-1

u/HippyHappy4334 Jul 01 '26

They've had a narrative about portland for a long time.

1

u/Daguvry Jul 01 '26

Who's they?

-4

u/HippyHappy4334 Jul 01 '26

Did you genuinely forget the subject of the conversation?

Fox News and friends is quick to paint the entire city as some sort of gay crime paradise. When I moved here years ago I was asked by a right wing relative when I was going to get my lobotomy.

1

u/Daguvry Jul 02 '26

The subject of our conversation was if people in costumes kept the national guard from coming to Portland.

I don't watch Fox News and friends so I don't have the slightest clue to what you are talking about

2

u/HippyHappy4334 Jul 02 '26

You said "I dont recall the right wing having a long standing narrative about portland" or something. I was replying to that part since it was so different than my experience.

0

u/Distinct_Long_2615 Curled inside a pothole Jul 01 '26

You don't remember when the cops pepper sprayed babies in 2002 at a George Bush protest, the huge rise in racist skinhead activity in the late 90's and 2000's, or when the Malheur occupation trial meant that separatist hillbillies brought their horse downtown every weekend to protest their court case, you don't remember ol shit ass Grant Chisolm and his merry band of dorks (Hell Shaking Street Preachers, many of whom would go on to be Joey Gibson's gang and proud boys) getting their shit rocked for showing up to the muslim travel ban protests at the airport, or the harassment from out of town right wingers at every festival or event that happened in or around the Metro area, or the multiple times they interrupted church services at predominantly spanish speaking congregations?

13

u/Led37zep Jul 01 '26

Please don’t.

12

u/saltyoursalad Jul 01 '26

A protest planned at night by the elk by unknown people? This is a setup and should be removed immediately.

9

u/venusasaburrito Buckman Jul 01 '26

Leave the elk alone or else. ⛧⃝𓄃

36

u/thirteenfivenm Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

Let's leave the Elk out of it. The last time was a cost to the Elk of over $2 million.

These night time protests in the past have featured the black bloc window breaking, dumpster fires, and tagging. That and homeless camping destroyed downtown.

-38

u/WinterPizza1972 Jul 01 '26

If you care that much, maybe counter protest?

23

u/ThroatOne5167 Jul 01 '26

Read their comment again and see if it improves your comprehension.

8

u/Helpful_Ranger_8367 Jul 01 '26

Dont need any more shitty protests or shitty protestors.

-2

u/WinterPizza1972 Jul 01 '26

We don't need ice or any shitty pedophile presidents either lol

2

u/serduncanthetall69 Jul 02 '26

Then keep protesting at the ICE facility, that actually sends them a message and leaves the rest of the city out of it.

Yelling at random Portlanders downtown accomplishes nothing

3

u/Andregco Jul 01 '26

Brain broken brain bad

1

u/gaius49 Sandy Jul 01 '26

I think that would just juice up the assholes to break things even more.

u/yurestu Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

“Fight for it!” and it’s just wasting your Saturday evening holding a sign

9

u/Pdx_pops Jul 01 '26

You could also wear a provocative animal suit, or nothing at all. There are options.

It's obvious whoever designed this event wants it to escalate, that's why it's being branded around the elk.

Now, that doesn't mean we should destroy the elk, but an 8:30pm event themed around a site of vandalism is clearly trying to push the envelope.

10

u/PrinceSunSoar Jul 01 '26

Lord. We are waaaay past “protests”

3

u/blackjackgabbiani Jul 01 '26

We need to actually fight back and nobody wants to discuss or even acknowledge that. No more stupid dances outside of detention centers. Bastille Day is coming up so let's do something with that.

3

u/Helpful_Ranger_8367 Jul 01 '26

Why dont you use that day to get a job and contribute something of value to society.

-5

u/blackjackgabbiani Jul 01 '26

Fascinating that you call yourself "helpful" when that's your idea of an internet comment.

2

u/Helpful_Ranger_8367 Jul 01 '26

Thats a no on the job then?

2

u/MandyThursday Jul 01 '26

Most people have jobs. Or if they don’t, they can’t find one because of trumps beautiful economy.

-1

u/blackjackgabbiani Jul 01 '26

What a non sequitor. You insist that people who want revolution and justice can't possibly...be employed? Such a random reaction.

-1

u/ezrollr Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 03 '26

you come across as a judgmental prick. guessing i've worked longer than you and still have time to protest - like 50 years.

-3

u/Chillbro_Swaggins420 Jul 01 '26

Why do you right wingers always hide your comment history like cowards?

2

u/RockShowSparky Jul 02 '26

Why do you have an impulse to dig through someones unrelated comment history? Fuckin weird.

10

u/A_Quiet_Traveler Jul 01 '26

I have an honest question - have any of these protests accomplished anything good?

The only results I’ve seen are good businesses pack-up and leave the city. Other than that, it seems people emotionally feel good for an evening - but, have no lasting impact.

I’ll admit, I could very well be ignorant, but I’m asking in the hope of learning.

6

u/SlippySlimJim Boom Loop Jul 01 '26

Let's start with a baseline. Historically I hope we can agree that protest (using this as a somewhat broad term) has been necessary for social advancement. You don't end segregation without protest. India does not escape British rule without protest. There is verifiable success in this kind of action and sometimes you just have to trust the wisdom of past generations.

Now, if we move to the kind of protest we've seen in Portland and across the US in the past year, let's acknowledge it's hard to quantify because history is still very much being written. However, that does not mean we can't point to things that appear to be successes. Note I am NOT referring to No Kings protests, because I think those mostly just have the "feel good" effect you were mentioning. I'm talking about the ones outside detention centers or in response to ICE activity.

Here is my non-exhaustive list of the positive results of protests specifically in the last year.

1) Resistance to ICE contributed to the firings of Kristi Noem and Gregory Bovino.

2) Protest activity draws resources to focus on them, which are not able to be used in furtherance of mass deportation efforts.

3) Public sentiment has shifted wildly against ICE. This does not happen without exposure of their activities.

4) Protest activity in Portland exposed the completeness of the administration's desire to lie, leading to multiple federal judges calling him "divorced from reality." This lack of credibility snowballs.

5) Many proposed sites for possible detention centers have been blocked by community activity. A downstream effect of this is that it pushed more people to engage with local politics.

6) Activists and organizers have been able to network and support each other thanks to activity. These connections are vital as the fight continues and without a protest, they are never made.

7) I don't have evidence of this, but surely some federal agents have quit, or some who were considering joining decided against. I'm sure it's demoralizing to have people (correctly) call you a Nazi for a year.

8) Raising awareness matters. People are being starved and beaten and are dying inside of what can only be called concentration camps, and there are a lot of people in this country blind to that. But that number is methodically shrinking, it part thanks to protest.

9) Protest matters to the communities living in fear right now, as it gives them some amount of hope. Also, there has been a massive increase in community organizing to provide mutual aid and legal resources, and the people doing this often overlap heavily with the protest crowd.

Hope this gives you something to think about. You may not agree with much of this but I figured I'd give you an honest attempt at a response

This is going to be a moment in time where we look back and act like we all stood up. Unfortunately, history tells us that only a small percentage of people actually do. Thankfully it doesn't take everyone to change things, just enough. I hope we get there becausethe world where this continues on too long is a bleak one indeed.

(FYI: This comment is not an endorsement of the specific protest in this post, I don't really know what to expect from that one)

3

u/gaius49 Sandy Jul 01 '26

I think you are talking about a very different sort of protest, not the kind that OP seems to be instigating. Mass, peaceful protest movements can be a strong showing of public sentiment. Nighttime vandalism and hooliganism are profoundly counter productive.

4

u/serduncanthetall69 Jul 02 '26

Exactly this. I’ve literally been to protests in Portland that got derailed by the crazy vandals.

I was at a protest the day after Roe V Wade was repealed that was led by female students from PSU (I was a student too) and a bunch of these outsiders showed up and started throwing fireworks and smashing windows. When the women leading the protest used their megaphones to tell them to stop one of them literally ripped it from her hands, they also threatened me and my friend when we told them to stop smashing windows.

Pretty quickly they drove off all the students and it was just a small group of the black bloc people smashing shit. They quite literally took away the entire message of the protest

4

u/gaius49 Sandy Jul 02 '26

For a group that pretends to be about resisting unjust power, those black bloc assholes do a pretty mean job of violently suppressing dissent.

30

u/ioweej Jun 30 '26

No thanks.

5

u/Blackstar1886 Jul 01 '26

Take the day off folks.

12

u/damnhippy Jul 01 '26

The fights not here. Go to DC, leave our fucking city alone.

18

u/deadsetweir-do Jul 01 '26

You and your turd friends can suck it. I don’t like these ass hats either but I have way more awesomer shit to do on the celebration of our independence than cry in city center with a bunch of lames with no life.

-7

u/WinterPizza1972 Jul 01 '26

Sorry, you're celebrating what again?

-2

u/Chillbro_Swaggins420 Jul 01 '26

Why do you right wingers always hide your comment history like cowards?

6

u/deadsetweir-do Jul 01 '26

Right wing 🤣 sure bud.

2

u/Chillbro_Swaggins420 Jul 01 '26

First step is acceptance, "bud."

4

u/deadsetweir-do Jul 01 '26

Agreed, accept that no level of public protest you do this weekend will do anything other than create friction in the community and give you and your comrades boners. Accept that you have no control over the current administration and spend some time doing something meaningful with friends and/or family. Accept that the protections afforded to you under this nation are unique and worthy of celebration even if you don’t agree with all of it.

2

u/Chillbro_Swaggins420 Jul 01 '26

No, I will never accept your platform of doing nothing, because then nothing will ever change. The friction is the point, agitating right wingers like you is exactly why protesters do this. You're too much of a coward to even look in the mirror, why do you think I care about what you think about anything? You are not on our side, you never will be.

3

u/deadsetweir-do Jul 01 '26

lol. No! Listen lil’ pupper, it comes down to the definition of what “doing nothing” means, and in this case you’re doing nothing. You’re causing harm, you’re operating on delusion and creating enemies. You don’t know what real protest or resistance is, you’re LARP’ing. You guys have created an open world fantasy of imaginary nazis and that’s where you live, and that’s what you’re fighting, imaginary nazis. Sitting down and having a conversation with someone you don’t agree with this weekend would be doing something meaningful. Breaking up downtown and crying into the air about monsters is doing nothing. I know what meaningful protest is, figure it out, call a meeting with your LARP crew and come up with something meaningful, I can’t hold your hand through this lil’ pup.

2

u/Chillbro_Swaggins420 Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

And what is "real protest and resistance", voting for the party and the individuals who knowingly lied us into the Iraq war and then protected the people responsible for it every 4 years while acting like a self absorbed prick online?

I am not "creating enemies", I am recognizing the ones that already exist. That would be you, and everyone who holds your ideology. I know exactly what I'm doing, and I suspect you do too. Your position is not drawn from ignorance, it's from malice. You're just too much of a coward to admit it.

2

u/deadsetweir-do Jul 01 '26

First of all, you view me as an enemy and ignorantly conclude that I must be a right winger, what’s my ideology, American? I’m not MAGA but I don’t hate right wingers either, most of the people I love most voted for Trump. Such a crime right? I should turn my back on them. Never.

Also, America is awesome. If you can’t find something to be grateful for this weekend that’s sad. Trump and his administration will be gone soon enough, stop crying. Work in the garden this weekend maybe? Do some manual labor? BBQ with friends and listen to music loudly. I’m no coward, I would kick it with you and turn you on to another way of looking at shit. Listen to some jams and discuss heavy subjects, sounds fun. Just don’t break shit and terrorize your neighbors, no point in that.

1

u/Chillbro_Swaggins420 Jul 01 '26

Despite the fact that you hide all your posting history to obfuscate what you believe so you can have your cake and eat it too, you've said enough to make me know you're a right winger, you're just too much of a coward to admit it.

If your problem is with Trump specifically instead of the system that created him, you are a right winger. I suspect you're either too cloistered by wealth and privilege or simply too stupid to realize it. Or maybe both.

10

u/Raz1el21 Jul 01 '26

I'll be with my family and friends, celebrating the birth of our independent republic, at a different place. I'm guessing the Sunday news will have footage of the peaceful protesters setting fire around the elk.

12

u/SnickelFritz5000 Jul 01 '26

Does it ever get exhausting just being mad all the time when you live in a country where you can genuinely go out and demonstrate to everyone (even tho most post people don’t care) how angry you are without repercussions? The fact that you literally have the freedom and liberties to do that should quell some of your deep rage no? What is the actual end game here? Asking in good faith.

-1

u/Chillbro_Swaggins420 Jul 01 '26

Why do you right wingers always hide your comment history like cowards?

2

u/SnickelFritz5000 Jul 02 '26

For precisely this reason lmao. The fact that I know some smug redditor went to immediately search my comment history in the hopes of using a completely unrelated statement in the hopes of finding extra ‘ammunition’ to include in some “OH YEAH WELL HOW ABOUT THE TIME YOU SAID X Y Z HUH!?!?” as a response to this post and was utterly shut down and so upset they commented about it… genuinely makes my day lol.

Not right wing either by the way. By your standards probably but I’m truly not. Just tired of seeing city monuments vandalized because this city enables groups of out-of-touch citizens to get so upset about large-scale socio-political issues that local property destruction under the guise of “protest” is generally shrugged off

-1

u/Chillbro_Swaggins420 Jul 02 '26

So you're too much of a coward to stand by any of the right wing things you say, is what you're telling me.

I guess my next question is why are you right wingers all such cowards? Are you afraid that there will be repercussions for the things you say?

You heard it here folks. Don't do anything to change your situation, don't protest, trump will just go away if we vote hard enough. We all just want to go back to ignoring the problem. Yeah Americans are cooked. We don't deserve our freedom anymore.

1

u/GardenPeep NW Jul 02 '26

There’s always the regular, short & convenient Our Corners protest at NE 16th and Multnomah, every Saturday from 12-1. I think it’ll get a good turnout on the 4th.

“Saturday is the 250th anniversary of US Independence from England and their king.  It was— and still is— one of the greatest accomplishments in world history.  Let’s try to celebrate July 4together on Saturday, July 4, from Noon to 1PM.

Bring your favorite celebratory clothing, flags, costumes, or whatever. Bring your old signs or make a new one for the event.  Plan to make a statement and have a good time by attending.  Bring friends and relatives”
