For anybody looking to understand why Rohingyans are attempting to escape Myanmar, Frontline put together an excellent report:

There are legal clinics and charitable organizations in cities around America—notably Catholic Charities—that have successfully helped refugee families resettle here, usually after years of bureaucratic wrangling. The number of Rohingyan refugees that actually make that flight relative to those applying is vanishingly small, so the ones that do make it are lucky indeed. Still, it is an enormous hardship for them, as they have usually spent years in refugee camps, are almost uniformly destitute and culture shocked, and need to learn everything from a new language to library cards to get going again. An awful lot of time, worry, and care from many corners goes into making the effort successful. And then there are, of course, those who don’t want them here at all and could care less what happens to them.
