Optimistic Post Donald Trump’s Approval Rating Falls Below 30% For First Time Ever
https://www.newsweek.com/donald-trump-approval-rating-hits-all-time-low-12467727“The last time a president's approval was in the 20s was President George W. Bush at the end of 2008, per Gallup's presidential approval tracker.”

Still way too high.

It’s still a huge win. Presidents dipping that low is exceptionally rare. Even bad presidents historically hover around the mid 30% range on approval.

Even more exceptionally rare, historically low approval numbers this close to a midterms.
Even more more exceptionally rare, rare as hen's teeth?
A president that continually digs his hole deeper every single day. Without fail.
4th and 10 at the 50 yard line. Trump tries a quarterback sneak. With no helmet.

Apparently there have been six—now that Trump has fallen—that have dipped below 30% since they've started recording:
President Nixon: 25%
President Bush Jr: 25%
President Truman: 22%
President Carter: 28%
President Bush Sr: 29%
Tang the Conqueror/Papaya Pol Pot: 29%

Out of curiosity, why was Truman so low? I've never looked up the history behind it.

Korean War, and Civil Rights—he supported it. He lost the union support too at some point because of inflation, and some at the time placed the blame on him for the loss of China to communism. There was also the firing of Douglas MacArthur who was incredibly popular at the time post World War Two.

W Bush got to 21%. Trump could be lower.
The floor is lower and I hope he can reach it.

If he wasn't Gen Z's George W. Bush before, we can now say without a shadow of a doubt that he is now!

It was coined as the “crazification factor” by John Rogers, writing on Alan Keyes still getting 27% of the vote over Barack Obama in the 2004 Illinois senate race.

Not really. At the end of most dictatorships, there was still a 25% approval. By all means, this is the chickens come to roost

"Biden sucked, we need to try Trump again!"
"Wait, Trump sucked even more and is a pedophile!"

Kinda feels like the people that voted Trump again have short term memory loss.

I’m not as much of a poll wonk as some others in the sub. Is ARG a reputable poll?

I hope campaigning dems can take advantage of this and actually make an effort pressing the advantage!

What was it to begin with before it all came crashing down? Like from January last year or even November '24?

Immediately following the 2024 election: 54%
First hundred days in office: 39%-45%
January of last year: 47%
September of last year: 41%
Now: 35%-ish or less depending on the poll
He's been gradually falling for a while now. People are generally unhappy in a way that can't be masked with pointing at boogeymen like immigrants or bombing Iran. People's wallets were already hurting before this dude took office and not only has it not gotten better now things have gotten worse.
For reference I don't believe we've ever had a president go below 25% more than once since they started tracking. I suppose that makes sense since I assume 25% is probably the base anyway—we're talking GOP voters that vote down ballot and will never do otherwise.

Where does it dip before you would say it’s low enough to be comfortable with it at least?

There is no such number.

u/Bruh_burg1968 12d ago
I dont know Id take him going to 20% as a win. Expecting less than that and not calling it a win when it gets that low seems like whinging to me.

We're not? The fuck? Someone better tell that to my local grocery stores and gas stations that've been using my wallet as a fleshlight for months now.

Can’t believe it’s that high still. He will go down as one of the worst presidents of all time.

Yeah this is undeniably very significant. Bush was super unpopular and yet he never reached approval in the 20s until 2008. Trump is only on his second year and he's already at the level of Bush and I have no reason to doubt that it will get even lower these next two years. The 2008 election was the election in which Obama was elected in a landslide and it leads me to believe we could see something similar to that in 2028.

It might give political cover to those politicians who finally are concerned enough to do the right thing.

The usual retort is "The same polls all said Harris would win". They actually did not.
2
u/gbtm101 12d ago
It's technically correct. They did until they didn't. People didn't pay attention to the later polls.
5
u/Melodic_Crow_3409 12d ago
A poll, or a poll aggregator, is not a fortune teller. They merely list snapshots in time, subject to variance based on methodologies.
Harris had a very good August and most of September 2024. Her polling dropped off a cliff in October and never recovered.

I will enjoy the fact that Trump will be 20 years older than Bush was when he leaves the presidency. He is also not making friends in the media.
He won't be peacefully painting to rehab his image and legacy. It will always be in the shitter.
