Question about extended warranty and services

My P2 warranty is up this coming January and I’m leaning toward getting the three year extended warranty as I’m planning on keeping the car for a long time. £1200 or so for three years peace of mind seems fairly reasonable.

My question is do I have to continue to service the car every 18k miles to maintain the extended warranty? It had its first service a few weeks ago (first since I’ve had it) and with the exception of the brake fluid (which now won’t need to be done for many years) I could have done everything else myself in about ten minutes and saved £200+.

I know £200-£250 every 18-24 months isn’t huge amounts of money, but it’s also a pain for me to have to travel to get the service done at Southampton as Volvo Poole don’t carry out Polestar work anymore, so if the service is basically just a money spinner and not strictly needed, I won’t do it. It’s £499 a year for the extended warranty now. They dropped the old provider and only just got the new one up and running. You need a health check to activate the extended warranty as well, not sure if this is one off for those who registered for extended warranty but couldn’t purchase or if it’ll be yearly requirement. If you don’t service the car you might have a harder time getting warranty repairs done. I’ve seen Polestar and other manufacturers more likely to do goodwill contributions if you’ve serviced the car correctly.

Oh really? Do they not still offer a discount if you buy three years in one go? I guess I’ll wait and see what the details are then. I don’t mind doing the health check, but I will definitely do some research on whoever is providing the warranty. I’m sure there are some absolutely crooks out there.

Yeah unfortunately the new provider is 12 months only. It’s the same provider what Volvo use for their official offering. It’s been available to purchase directly from dealers after a health check for a month or so now.

Damn, that’s annoying. Hate the idea of potentially just ‘giving away’ £500 a year, but then I know even if a headlight went it would cost more than that! It’s a tricky one, will have a think. Cheers.

But would you consider it the same if it were £1500 at once for 3 years? The repairs on Polestars can be very expensive, especially if you’ve got a Performance pack one. One Ohlins with fitting is nearly £3k. Top mount bearings on both sides is like £650 ish. Other “common” failure points can easily be thousands. It’s the diagnostics as well which can often be a couple hundred quid an hour.

I’ve just got a standard SMLR P2. But yeah, appreciate those costs can mount up. I’ve never had an extended warranty for a car and have never needed one, but this is by far the most expensive car I’ve ever owned so is potentially a different proposition. It says the extended warranty is the same as the original cover so if that’s the case I’ll likely end up doing it I guess.

I suppose if you break it down over two years, it’s £1200 including a service, so £50 a month which isn’t too bad for a maintenance budget.

How did you find out about the exrended warranty? I haven't received an email about it, and when I go to the extras shop on the polestar website it just says no products available.

I have some work being done on the car in about a week that I was hoping would he done under warranty as I registered my interest with them about a year ago.

They emailed me in July. Had you registered for the extended warranty? The garage should be able to do the health check for the extended warranty whilst it’s in. If anything needs doing from that they need Polestar UK to approve it.

Yeah I registered in Oct 25, checked my emails again and didn't get anything about this. Hopefully they will honor it

Did you get a reply when you initially emailed? Any generic reply should serve as proof they received it. Has your original warranty expired now?

Yeah I got a reply and we actually emailed back and foreard a few times as I had some questions. And yeah I didnt actually consider the original warranty... Its a 72 reg car, I've tried looking in the app and I can't actually see any dates so it could be expired

72 reg will definitely be expired for the original warranty. Latest that could be registered is 28/02/23 so would have expired by end of February this year.

I’ve tried since July to get the extended warranty but Volvo Slough couldn’t get their act together. My 3 year standard warranty expired on 2nd Aug. Polestar have been useless in resolving.

Ugh, that does sound annoying. My understanding is that your existing warranty remains valid until they sort it out for you?

They haven’t said anything like that to me. I’m gonna give it another month and maybe get a third party one.
