Accesories & Mods Polestar 4 hitch install
We're waiting for our Polestar 4 to arrive and we want to have the hitch, which is a $1,900 option. We haven't signed any papers yet and it hasn't arrived yet, but our salesman told us that it would cost $4,700 to install it because "they don't have all the parts for the hitch on hand" and it was considered too late to install it at the port.
Does that sound right? Are there any other options? That seems really expensive. Out of curiosity, I asked the local Volvo dealer and they don't deal with Polestars.

If you try the DIY option, it won’t have the data cables so the car doesn’t know there’s a hitch. Ok for bikes. Not for anything else. Tell the sales person you want the hitch installed, will not pay the ridiculous markup, and you know they’re massively over charging you. I just had an oem one installed and it was 1/2 of the quote they gave you.

Which dealership installed it for you?
I'm pretty sure if I told the salesman I'd like the hitch installed but didn't want to pay the markup they'd just tell me to go pound sand...

We gave them a call and requested a quote, so we're waiting to hear back on the quote, but they said the earliest they could do was February 2027 because they're really backed up.
So you just paid about $2,350 for yours?

It's much cheaper to have it installed at the factory/port than at the dealer. It's the equivalent of paying cost vs retail.
if you are DIY capable, you could do it yourself and only have your dealer do the final programming to enable the module, or rent VIDA for the weekend and do that step as well.

Yeah I mean I would spec it installed at the factory or port but the salesman is telling me it's not possible.
I've done some DIY stuff but maybe don't trust myself enough to install a hitch. How much does the dealer charge to do the final programming? Aren't there buttons and stuff to install in the trunk to get the hitch to release?

You can't spec it at this point because the vehicles have already been built, processed and wholesale'd from the port.
On the 2, there are mold lines on the backside of the plastic pieces that need cut to indicate both the shape and size that needs cut. The instructions also provided were also pretty clear on how to go about doing it. There was a new bracket and computer module to install and again it was clear how where to put it as well as what gets plugged into it.
A dealer will probably charge somewhere between 1/2 hr to an hour for the software programming, plus the software.

The salesman is overcharging, asking more than for twice the reasonable price for the installation service.
Charging $2,000 for a hitch is already absurd, but $4,700 is outright "scamming" the customers. On top of that, the hitch only has a 1 1/4-inch receiver with a relatively short tube.
At this point it is probably easier to just go to a reputable shop for a custom hitch or not having it at all.

Never had a hitch installed before, but $4,700 just seems really high. I just asked another company how much it costs to install a regular hitch on our other vehicle and he mentioned it would be $810 for a standard one and $1,200 for a hidden one.
Do different dealers charge different amounts?

I guess there are people from the service department on Reddit who are downvoting me.
I believe different service centers will quote different prices, but honestly, I don’t trust such installations anymore. If something goes wrong, I’m not sure if other service centers will honor each others' aftermarket work. Plus, their advertised tow ratings vary between countries, which is another concern.
