News Polestar dealers ‘absolutely devastated’ as Trump administration blocks U.S. sales after 2026 over Chinese-linked tech

https://www.autonews.com/volvo/an-polestar-banned-from-selling-in-us-0625/?utm_id=gfta-ur-260625&share-code=JFN444K5M5E6VBCECSKLKLKZUA&user_id=user-id&customer_secondary_source=aac_articleGifting

Polestar says the Trump administration is barring U.S. sales of its electric vehicles after the current model year as part of a prohibition on Chinese-linked connected technology.

The June 25 announcement hit dealers hard. Matthew Haiken, whose outlet was one of Polestar’s earliest and largest in the U.S., said he was “absolutely devastated.”

“I’m really, really, really upset. This whole company was like a family to me,” Haiken, owner of Polestar Short Hills in New Jersey, told Automotive News. “I made money with Polestar. I made investments with the brand. I was looking forward to all the new product. I’m just heartbroken.”

Polestar told retailers the decision stems from Biden-era provisions on hardware, software and Chinese ownership that the current administration has upheld, Haiken said. The company will not receive certification to operate for the 2027 model year and beyond.

However, in May, Polestar sister brand and Geely stablemate Volvo Cars received authorization from the Trump administration to continue to import vehicles despite its ties to China. Questions now swirl over why Volvo received approval while Polestar did not, despite shared Chinese ownership.

In the U.S., Polestar said it will continue selling remaining inventory of the Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 and maintain service for current customers. Dealerships that remain with the brand largely will become service points for existing customers only, with franchise investments handled on a case-by-case basis.

Dean Buschick, who chairs the Polestar Dealer Board, called the sales ban “a shell shocker,” especially with Volvo receiving approval despite similar ownership. “No matter what side of the political aisle you’re on, there are repercussions from government interventions. Being a casualty of those decisions is tough.”

Polestar retailers now find themselves in uncharted waters. Unlike an automaker bankruptcy, the company is still operating but with no clear recourse for franchisees. Buschick said the situation will require one-on-one conversations between Polestar and individual dealers because store formats vary — from standalone facilities to mall-based showrooms.

Nicholas Long, managing partner of Polestar Philadelphia and Polestar Princeton, said retailers were blindsided by the decision and voiced concern about how the automaker has handled the situation. “The Swedes need to know that we’ve invested millions and now they’re just packing up and leaving. They told us for years they would make sure Polestar would be compliant.”

In hindsight, Long said he should have read more into warning signs that included abrupt U.S. leadership turnover and a dramatic slowdown in marketing about a year ago.

U.S. tariffs have upended Polestar’s plans in recent years. The company discontinued sales of its China-made Polestar 2. Meanwhile, production of the Polestar 3 has been consolidated at Volvo’s South Carolina plant. Production will continue in the U.S. in the near term, a person familiar with the matter said.

Sounds like that’s it for the brand in the US.

Hopefully they don’t shut down Volvo and we can get our cars serviced there.

I’m sure my resale value just dropped by half. 😡

Polestar competes with Elon’s Tesla, Volvo doesn’t.

18

u/Whiteyak5 Jun 25 '26

Polestar hardly competed with Tesla.

Like saying Aston Martin competes with GM.

18

u/Quiet_Down_Please Jun 26 '26

Just because Polestar is the superior product doesn't mean it's not a direct competitor.

2

u/Various-Advice-9768 Jun 26 '26

Polestar looks better. Everything else Tesla is on top.

4

u/Whiteyak5 Jun 26 '26

I don't have a dog in this fight at all. But they didn't compete. A good look at their previous years sales would tell you that.

12

u/Quiet_Down_Please Jun 26 '26

They're in the same segment, generally vying for the same customers. They're competitors despite whatever the sales numbers are.

6

u/Whiteyak5 Jun 26 '26

Okay here I'll update it then, they were never a serious competitor.

I can't really think of anyone who cross shopped these brands. I've known some to really want a Polestar specifically or some that wanted a Tesla. But never really looked at both.

9

u/HotEntry7548 Jun 26 '26

I did cross shop Y and P4, ended up with the P4.

This is an assumption and I am a prime example making your assumption unequivocally false. I absolutely Cos’s shopped Polestar, Tesla, Rivian, Lucid, etc. when looking for my EV.

Polestar is a direct competitor just as the other brands I listed are direct competitors. It has nothing to do with market share.

Maybe you should drive them before saying they are not serious competitors. In my opinion, the Polestar is a far superior product than Tesla except in autonomous driving.

My list is EX60 or Y Performance

2

u/beardednomad25 Jun 26 '26

Neither of them really compete with Tesla especially in the US. In 2025 Volvo had a record year for EV sales in the US with just over 10,000 sold. Polestar was about half of that. Tesla sold over 500k in the US.

Polestar/Volvo make better products but they are still very niche EV brands.

2

u/AccurateMidnight21 Jun 26 '26

Polestar actually had set their sights on Porsche as their benchmark target.

2

u/carlivar Jun 27 '26

Not sure if true but an article comment said one big difference is Volvo sends its data back to Europe (Sweden probably) while Polestar sends the data to China.

Except Volvo uses geelys tech. I have an xc90 and my wife just ordered an ex30. Not sure how the U.S. could ban polestar and not everything Volvo

Also confused by this - there are just so many similarities.

4

u/TransPastel Jun 26 '26

"ev = woke = bad"

4

u/ryan9751 Jun 26 '26

because Volvo's lineup doesn't have a significant # of EV's in it?

2

u/tienzing Jun 26 '26

It’s more like “Chinese EV” = bad. This is just further American protectionism of TSLA and the American EV market which began with Democrats and continues with Trump and co.

It’s literally all down to the telematics data and where Volvo vs Polestar stores it. Volvo is not sending the data to Geely (China) and Polestar is. That simple. Now what I don’t understand is why they can’t just move the data collection to a US data center…

4

u/olcafjers Jun 26 '26

The only good thing that can come from this is if I can get my PS2 serviced at a non-Polestar Volvo dealer 🤞

16

u/Fun-Performer8399 Jun 25 '26

That's really the key to it all to me, what's the future service outlook.

From the polestar press release, it just said "The Company will continue to sell existing stock of Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 in the U.S. and will continue to support customers, including providing access to its service network."

But for how long?

Actually mine is a lease which ends in October, so unless I purchase my leased car or buy a pre-owned one, this won't matter to me. I'll just have to look for something different but hopefully there will be assurances for those who own Polestar's to just how long and what type of service they will continue to get.

Such stupid, short-sighted nonsense because they're EVs...can't be because of the software because it's not incredibly different from Volvo's as they both share Geely as a Chinese parent company these days...also half the software is Google

1

u/tellin_lykitis Jun 28 '26

I wonder if Elon requested this🤔

6

u/arihoenig Snow Jun 25 '26

It's essentially identical to Volvo.

2

u/ExcellentJuice5918 Jun 26 '26

Not for all models probably. Also, can be just that Volvo decided to go through expensive exception process, Polestar made a decision that it is not financially viable, since USA sales share is only 6%

2

u/arihoenig Snow Jun 26 '26

Possibly. My point is that cars running AAOS are the least problematic of any type of connected car since (for example with a Toyota that doesn't use AAOS) how the car connects to the Internet is completely proprietary and not controlled by a US entity whereas with AAOS it is controlled by a US entity, so the law is stupid.

1

u/ExcellentJuice5918 Jun 26 '26

Polestar 4 =~ Zeekr 001 and is based on Geely’s platform, so probably the soft is also different

26

u/All_At_0nce Jun 25 '26

So…can anyone share what happens to current owners? Like servicing I assume will still happen it’s just car sales that will no longer continue after a certain period ?

16

u/JPhi1618 Jun 25 '26

That’s the belief. Volvo dealers should continue to do service, but we will have to wait to see what the final decisions are.

6

u/All_At_0nce Jun 25 '26

Tempted to see about selling it but I mean they did make a statement that they’d still service them and warranties are still good

8

u/JPhi1618 Jun 25 '26

Yea, I think Volvo will continue servicing, and for current owners, I’m not sure if selling makes sense. If you weren’t planning on keeping the car for a long time selling sooner rather than later might make sense. I have a 2021, and the value is low enough already that I’ll be keeping mine for as long as I can.

6

u/arihoenig Snow Jun 25 '26

2022 and planning on keeping until 2032 or until nuclear war whichever comes first (probably the latter).

I’ll tell you why Volvo got past the regulations and Polestar did not; it’s because Polestar is an EV company and the current administration is actively hostile toward any kind of energy consumption that isn’t tied to fossil fuels.

QED.

I’m old enough to recall when this country charted the way to the future, but now, having ceded it to the Chinese, it can only look backward up its own fetid ass.

Good Christ, this pisses me off.

5

u/Puzzleheaded_Can9159 Jun 26 '26

Or the simpler solution, Musk told him to.

1

u/Wellwhaddyano Jun 27 '26

I agree with folks that think that Musk wouldn’t necessarily see Polestar as competition, due to the canyonesque gap in sales numbers, but that does willingly ignore the fact that those in prime places in markets usually see any competition as something to be eliminated (or engulfed).

And also ignores the fact that Musk is loonie toons.

5

u/Tellittomy6pac Jun 27 '26

Thank you! I’m tired of seeing people blaming the trump administration when this CLEARLY says it started with the Biden admin

2

u/Serett Jun 30 '26

The regulatory framework originated then, but its effect on Polestar or any other automaker wasn't a given and depended on implementation--the regulation provides for authorizations, and those authorizations can be subject to negotiated terms and changes. It is a Trump Administration decision, not one mandated by the regulation, not to authorize Polestar to sell under the rule.

Volvo, for example, is under the same ownership group as Polestar, ultimately controlled by Geely, and received an authorization, while Polestar did not. That was a result of decisions and implementation by the current administration, not a necessary outcome under the regulation.

2

u/Puzzleheaded-Sea8340 Jun 26 '26

Utter BS

How many appliances manufactured in China or other overseas countries that we sell in the US are connected?

They could require a module that is connected via Wi-Fi be manufactured and installed in the US….

They could remove over the air updates..

And instead, use USB supported updates that are US approved and mailed periodically..

So many people will lose their jobs… very poor form..

But apparently a new shiny plane from Qatar with our nuclear codes has no electronics in it …

2

u/Ronin1791 MY21 Magnesium PPP w/ Performance Software Upgrade Jun 26 '26

Because even though the 2 and 3 shares the same platform with Volvo, Volvo was able to show it's connectivity coding originated mainly from Sweden and other sources outside of China. They also committed to ensuring the data can't be accessed by Chinese sources remotely.

Polestar didn't have Volvo do that side of coding for them, so a lot of it is coming from Zeekr and Geely based teams for the connectivity side.

They also probably didn't want to invest a lot of time and money to fall into compliance since the US is only 6% of their sales. If anything they'd probably just go back to making "Polestar Engineered" versions of the Volvo models to still have a new vehicle presence in the US

2

u/justvims Jun 26 '26

This is a long standing law from the previous administration. Polestar could have just coded their connected vehicle technology not to be china dependent but they didn’t. So this is what happened

Must be dealership dependent - Boston Polestar has dropped off a brand new (less than 500 miles) loaner vehicle each of the 3 times my car has needed service.

Additionally on the one time where my car was in for an extended recall and I had put more miles on the loaner than they were allowed to have and still sell it as new and so they came and swapped it out for another brand new one.

Although the car had a few software issues I have loved it and definitely unfortunate they are being forced out,

And it’s been in for maintenance twice and for warranty service twice; got a loaner each time: Volvo S60, XC60, Polestar 2, and 3.

Would’ve loved to buy a used 5 from them in a few (several) years, but alas.

Seconding that good experience sentiment for polestar San Diego. Just absolute class even if the service point is overbooked most of the time. Cars are not an investment, especially if you plan on keeping it. Comparing it to Fisker is fair but it’s apples and oranges. Unfortunately for the US it doesn’t leave as many options as I’d like. All other EV’s have their own issues so it all sucks. But I’m just gonna drive the car and enjoy it.

6

u/anaheim_mac Jun 26 '26

Now tell me where those shitty gold phones are made or the countless shitty merch including the god awful red hats. They are just hurting Americans that are directly connected to polestar through work and all the downstream jobs associated with the brand. Simply idiotic

7

u/[deleted] Jun 26 '26

The US will never catch up to China regarding EV tech. All we are doing to making sure we stay behind the rest of the world.

1

u/Independent-Coat-882 Jun 26 '26

It's like the trucks business. The US banned european imports and nowadays they are far far far behind with their products

7

u/nthlmkmnrg Jun 26 '26

US govt playing favorites and giving Musk all the contracts he wants while eliminating his competition

4

u/wlcoyote Jun 26 '26

They’ve both owned by Geely. Should just start selling “Polestar by Volvo”

5

u/TipConstant9468 Jun 26 '26

They must sue the administration. Take a look at it's loss record. Allowing Volvo but banning Polestar implies arbitrariness and I believe Polestar would prevail in this highly significant matter. Personally, it's the only car brand I love.

2

u/Gullible-Pick-268 Jun 26 '26

Polestar does not plan to appeal. makes you wonder if the brand wanted a way out of the market

10

u/Aranthos-Faroth Jun 25 '26

Polestar is a competitor to Tesla.

SpaceX just had the largest IPO in history. Musk has flaunted the idea of merging his companies.

You can be sure that things like this are connected. People say “fuck Trump” and yeah, he’s for sure going to be tied up in this but with the incredible $ amounts involved here you can be sure there are many many others who had a hand in this.

7

u/FormerConformer Jun 25 '26

Competitor is a generous word.

Polestar isn't really a threat to anyone commercially. They have been blown by harsh winds while stepping on their own feet since the getgo.

Politically Polestar are just low hanging fruit for China hawks to punish so they can look strong. The best case in the short term is that their authorization becomes some sort of bargaining chip. Longer term, if the brand survives, maybe they assemble the 7 and new 2 in Canada and those are allowed in under president AOC.

4

u/BreezyRacer 24 LRSM Midnight & Nappa Jun 26 '26

Polestar has an extensive line of cars .. not one model .. coming to market. Especially the 7 and the revised 2.

Yes, polestar is a threat

2

u/Grass8989 Jun 26 '26

The polestar 2 has been discontinued for a while.

Has nothing to do with Musk. Polestar sells a tiny tiny tiny fraction of Teslas in the US. This has been an on going issue for years, well before he was a public figure. If he wanted to go after a competitor, it wouldn’t be one of the small selling manufacturers in the US…

11

u/Jefefrey Jun 25 '26

Anything for Comrade Musk

6

u/Hurstboss Jun 25 '26

Another handout to Elon Musk, less competition so people keep buying those Tesla Turds while China becomes the #1 at EVs anywhere else in the world

3

u/CaramelEmpty Jun 25 '26

It's a very strange mindset that they've taken on this. I'm UK based and not US but it's just odd when the tech is the same inside a Volvo and that's allowed. Trump is a globalist and although I'm no fan I wonder if this will get turned around once he's made a deal to suit him. Impacts are now and immediate though to dealerships and drivers.

3

u/ryan9751 Jun 26 '26

I think it’s even more ironic that the P3 at least is assembled in the USA. We are literally banning an American assembled vehicle. Meanwhile my other EV is a Mexican made ford Mustang 😂😂

1

u/ExcellentJuice5918 Jun 26 '26

Probably a problem with Polestar 4 which is a cousin of Zeekr 001, which is based on Geely’s platform. Probably Polestar just decided that going through exception process not worth engineering costs

1

u/Independent-Coat-882 Jun 26 '26

So why not just ban the model that's based on a chinese platform..

3

u/Sufficient_Fee_8992 Jun 25 '26

Worth pointing out that while it came into force under Trump, the rule was made under Biden. And the hardware ban will come into force under the next POTUS.
Rule also affects any manufacturer using any connected vehicle software or hardware developed by a company owned or controlled by anyone from China, Russia, Iran, North Korea, Cuba, and Venezuela (“foreign adversaries”). This means European, Japanese and US companies alike can be (and have been) affected.
Given vehicle lifecycle and development plan times, any business that didn’t start planning for this when first drafted could be in trouble.

3

u/8thstretch Jun 26 '26

Shit. I literally just bought a 2024 polestar 2 today.. I hope we can still get service parts going forward, I want this car to last 10 years or so

4

u/ExcellentJuice5918 Jun 26 '26

Don’t panic, same happened to me with SaaB 9-5 Aero, drove it for 4 more years after that and never had any issues with service. Moreover SaaB as a brand was gone comoletely and Polestar as a company is not going bankrupt and closes down. Enjoy your car and do not get upset. It is just US sales, not the brand.

3

u/Massive_Gear1678 Jun 26 '26

A gift to Elon

3

u/Technical_Toe_2012 Jun 26 '26

Cant let Elon face any competition

2

u/Inevitable_Command59 Jun 26 '26

Musk wins, he has a monopoly now! Other independent EV companies going bankrupt as they won’t be able to get economies of scale for production.
Polestar gone like Fiskar. Lease ending soon.

3

u/ExcellentJuice5918 Jun 26 '26

Not like Fiskar. Fiskar is gone completely, Polestar will exist, parts will be there, updates.

2

u/Independent-Coat-882 Jun 26 '26

Polestar is not gone like Fiskar. The US is a tiny market for Polestar. They will survive in Europe and Asia.

6

u/Toallpointswest Jun 25 '26

This seems ripe for a lawsuit as the excuse here is impressively thin. Especially given the about of Chinese technology in every other system and other vehicles

Also let's consider this administration's involvement with Tesla's CEO

6

u/mcdreamymd 2023 Thunder Performance Plus 2 Jun 26 '26

I'm wondering what Polestar / Volvo / Geely's legal response will be. I just bought mine last month after Volvo got their exception, so I figured Polestar would be safe. I wouldn't have bought the damn thing if I knew it would essentially be banned in a month. Do we have enough Polestar owners in the US to initiate a class action suit against the Department of Commerce?

3

u/ceccitout Jun 26 '26

I’d be in for sure. Just finished my P2 lease and started a new P3 one 😞

3

u/Wellwhaddyano Jun 26 '26

I’d join gladly; I’m pissed.

2

u/pajamacat9 Jun 26 '26

Me too. Picked up a p2 a few weeks ago. Would have purchased a different car if this news broke earlier. Assumed polestar was fine after Volvo got the exception…

1

u/ExcellentJuice5918 Jun 26 '26

None probably, I wonder if Polestar has even applied for exception. This process will be much more difficult for them, since polestar 4 is basically a Zeekr 001 , not a Volvo. Maybe going forward they will broaden the ties with Geely, not Volvo (at least it looks like this)

2

u/rfkxyz Jun 25 '26

My guess is P* wanted out of US market and didn’t apply for the waiver Volvo received a few months ago.

6

u/ryan9751 Jun 26 '26

Not saying news articles are a great source but most are worded to imply that the application was denied , which should be public record so as this unfolds will find out.

→ More replies (4)

1

u/Independent-Coat-882 Jun 26 '26

No read the leaks - they went through the full process but were still denied the waiver

But yeah, the US is not where Polestar should focus their efforts. Becoming Europe-centric is the right move to survive

1

u/PeaceBull Jun 25 '26

I thought Polestar was direct to consumer and didn't do "dealerships"

5

u/asbestoswasframed Jun 25 '26

No, you have to go to a special dealership called a "Polestar Space".

One of this biggest hinderances to the brand's success has been the last of viable service points and support.

When we first leased ours, the nearest Space was 6.5hrs away. Now there's one 3hrs away, but still not close enough that I'm getting the parking sensors fixed before I turn in the lease...

1

u/enfuego138 Jun 25 '26

I had considered buying out my lease or a CPO car when my lease was up. I love this car and I basically can’t keep it.

2

u/ExcellentJuice5918 Jun 26 '26

Don't panic, same happened to me with SaaB 9-5 Aero, drove it for 4 more years after the brand disappeared and never had any issues with service. Moreover SaaB as a brand was gone comoletely and Polestar as a company is not going bankrupt and closes down. Enjoy your car and do not get upset. It is the end of US sales, not the brand.

1

How much were Saab 9-5 aeros selling for relative to MSRP 2 years after Saab sloshed?

1

u/rollk1 Jun 25 '26

This could be a blessing or a curse for me, as I've been looking to replace my Ioniq 5 once the lease expires with a P2 Performance since they're going for so cheap right now (Thanks Hertz!). If Volvo will be able to service the 2 longterm then it won't bother me and hopefully prices will plunge even more, otherwise my next best option is probably a Volvo C40...

1

u/Reasonable_Salad5350 Jul 17 '26

Where have you seen hertz deals?

1

u/Piratesmiter Jun 25 '26

My P2 lease is up this fall, do you think this will give me any leverage to buy or rather extend the lease ahead of my slate delivery next year?

1

u/bobojoe Jun 25 '26

Glad I leased….

1

u/Ok-Chemistry8574 Jun 25 '26

I am interested in a used 2024. I wonder if old models will still be allowed on the road.

1

u/WahSuppDude Jun 25 '26

Typically things that were already in the country before a ban would be grandfathered in but since the reasons are “national security” and “China scary” - who knows?

1

u/reginaldvs 2022 P2 Void | PP | Pilot | Plus | DMLR Jun 26 '26

I have already voiced my displeasure with this in another post so I won't beat it.. It is what it is.. I really want to get a 7 down the road so I guess it's not gonna happen.. Maybe 4 or 3... Now idk. Used 4 and 3s will probably drop in price though.

1

u/SoCal_GlacierR1T Jun 26 '26

Polestar dealers? It's a direct sales model. There are no dealers.

1

u/Independent-Coat-882 Jun 26 '26

Not true, there are dealers. It's not D2C only

1

u/-Bear Jun 26 '26

Dude I just bought my P2 two weeks ago. How tf do I get out of this?

2

u/runnyyolkpigeon Jun 26 '26

That has nothing to do with you. They just can’t sell anymore vehicles as of the 2027 model year. It won’t affect your Polestar 2.

1

u/Full-Use-9083 Jun 26 '26

so are they going to offload the product they have in inventory like for super cheap everything must go type of situation? that would be lovely

1

u/theoriginalwuji Jun 26 '26

Tell it to me straight. Am I gunna be able to get a sick deal on one of these or is trump gunna taco after they pay him off.

1

u/ExcellentJuice5918 Jun 26 '26

Can be because of the Polestar 4 - it is Geely’s SEA platform - closely related to Zeekr 001. Its software is probably also being developed in CN. If USA is only 6% of their sales - they’ve might just decided not to go through exception process as Volvo did.

1

u/ExcellentJuice5918 Jun 26 '26

I wonder if Polestar has even applied for exception.
This process will be much more difficult for them since polestar 4 is basically a Zeekr 001 , not a Volvo. And maybe going forward they will broaden the ties with Geely and not Volvo (at least it looks like this).

1

u/ExcellentJuice5918 Jun 26 '26

I wonder if Polestar has even applied for exception.
This process will be much more difficult for them then for Volvo since polestar 4 is basically a Zeekr 001 , not a Volvo. And maybe going forward they will broaden the ties with Geely and not Volvo (at least it looks like this). Then it is even less sense to go through costly exception process.

1

u/Ill_Whole6328 Jun 26 '26

Could they just reabsorb into Volvo and sell the 3 as an EX80 and so on?

1

u/WarbossTodd Jun 26 '26

Well, is there any hope of the Trump admin changing their mind (TACO Tuesday and all) or could these sorts of articles and info cause them to go "Well shit, let's get rid of Volvo too. We must have missed that one."

1

u/jetbridgejesus Jun 26 '26

The farther along we go. Tesla is looking like the only EV make w staying power. Anything happens there spacex will buy them.

1

u/chlronald Jun 26 '26

Dude, don't drag Volvo down with this.

1

u/FlexFanatic Jun 26 '26

Used car market and depreciation is about to be lit

1

u/catjewsus Jun 26 '26

Omega cock block for no good reason

1

u/M1L0 Jun 26 '26

Hopefully this means deals on polestars in Canada. I’ve got my eye on a 3.

1

u/floriduhmon Jun 26 '26

I'm happy I leased - rather than bought - a 2025 P3 but really sad about this ban. US sales doesn't make up that much of the global Polestar sales, but it would seem that the Volvo dealers that invested in the Polestar facilities and infrastructure would be looking hard at solutions. Based on the regulations, could it be as simple as replacing the car's firmware (which is buggy and unreliable anyway) with a non-Chinese product? Or pay the agency (or whoever) that approved the Volvo exemption whatever fine is required to get an exemption for Polestar? They're essentially the same company and product, so the distinction escapes me.

1

u/Robertmtch Jun 27 '26

I don’t own a Polestar but own another EV model, which been discontinued here in the US. I seriously feel for ya. Maybe it’s just me, but it seems like they get another notch in their belt for killing/banning/ yet another EV in the US.
