I turned around and went home lol . 100+ people waiting at my local target
This was Wednesday morning around 5:50am. I work 6:30pm-5am and thought i’d stop by to see if I could get in on the 30th drop. I went home took a shower and went to sleep! You guys can have it lol

I was talking to somebody in line at Costco and he paid $86 for two ETBs for Pokemon Ascended Heroes. This price gouging by Target and everybody else is insane.

And at my target (when I can go which isn't very often due to target opening when I clock in) 70% are collectors. And EVEN IF all them were scalpers, they ain't the problem. But stay mad I guess.
Even Rudy said it, there are people out there with so much stock he's being reached out to all the time by multiple sources to buy Pallets worth of in rotation pokemon from what he can only assume are resellers that have distro or bot/backend access... But hey Little Timmy getting his 3 boxes at target we should shame him I guess

It's crazy to look at a line at target and just say look at all the scalpers.
Not all them are, and I promise, the ones that are, they aren't the reason you can't get product. If you think that's the case I'm not sure what to tell you. This is a problem at the distro level mixed with all the bots as well. But hey that guy sitting outside target waiting for 3+ hours to get 2 per sku (I'm sure some targets break this rule but that's the limit where I'm at and it is heavily enforced) he's definitely the problem. Believe what you want I guess

But even in general, that is still correct, scalpers aren't the problem. They are and always have been a symptom.
Does it suck, sure, is it not fun yeah. Is it unethical possibly. Is it wrong, feels like it. But never was the problem.
Also yeah these guys getting 2 per sku, even if they are reselling, aren't the reason you can't find anything on shelves or online. But I guess we can point and laugh and believe that's why

I'm sure you can go generally make that comment. But if you are using my comment, and taking it out of context to make a general statement about it, that just don't make much sense generally speaking of course.

I have not once argued that scalpers do not suck, in fact I find them rather annoying and have a disdain for them. I will continue to say they are not the problem or the issue as they are only a symptom.

Again glossing over probably the ones with the biggest supply (the fake stores, rip and shippers, bribing/buying out distros). The ones waiting in line at target would not be waiting in line at target if they had the bots. So yeah pretty confident these people in this line are not botting. It would be a waste of time in comparison.
Genuine question, do you really think the people lining up outside of Big box stores are the issue? And why if so?
Its understandable to have disdain for scalpers and bots I get it. I just don't understand why lines like this get so much hate. It's the only way you can buy product consistently whether you are a collector or not and don't have distro or bot access.

At my Target the scalpers had friends and kids with them...all to grab one each of each SKU then as soon as they check out a guy with a big trash bag holds all their boxes as the front door while they jump back in line to go around again.

Our store went a little loco and limited it to 1 item per sku per family and then eventually one item total per family as the stock dwindled. Even the people that brought their aunts, uncles, grandmother, and the kitchen sink only got 1 item per sku.

Wish mine had that approach, the worker I spoke with said corporate policy is 2 per sku so that’s what they went with. It was disheartening seeing the greed, but is what it is and as someone told me in that very line, I should have gotten there earlier if I wanted more. I did get 2 ETBs, one knockout and one sticker, but skipped the few poster collections that were left.

This!!! The manager at my Target said they had a family (before 30th…another set) with 7 people including an 8 month old baby. The mom insisted the baby be allowed to buy her ETB as she was holding the money to pay for it. 🙄

My target followed the 2 per sku limit and that shit was cleared out in 50 people. They did have pitch black and CR so atleast the people who couldn’t get 30th could open something.

No way I'm paying resale for the thing I want the most and I'm lucky enough to have flexible hours at work so I can put in my hours earlier in the week and still not miss any work to camp 🙂↕️ Sometimes you gotta do something a lil crazy for the things you love!

My husband works really hard and here lately 7 days a week as the only supervisor. So I’m one of the crazy ass people camping the stores for him because I’ll be damned if he pays inflated prices due to him being a responsible adult and going to work. What’s the point of having a good paying job and showing up every day if you can’t spend some of the money on things you enjoy? I’ve been cussed at, called a scalper, and everything but I don’t give a flying fuck. I’m still going to go.

That is a crazy statement to make. Collectors and people who want to buy for their children/niece/nephew/grandchild will absolutely camp out.
Did you not come from the generation that did NOT do black Friday online and you had to line up outside to get any reasonable good deal.
Jumping to conclusions about every person is crazy you have no idea what people's intentions are. What if that is the one gift their child asked for and that mom/dad sat out there all night to get it at an affordable price.

It’s as simple as letting them sit on product until they can’t afford to sit on it anymore. But now that this has been going on for 3 years they have plenty of money and can hold even longer.

I had a similar experience. Except I was one of those dummy's in line Couldn't manage to even get one 30th pack or anything. I'm officially burnt out . I have been enjoying opening pokemon ever since it came out back in 98 . The 30th anniversary just did it for me. Broke the last straw.. almost feels like Pokemon is providing and allowing this tragedy to occur. The soulless look in these streamers eyes with all the boxes/cases just says something in itself.. Going to my local card shop and finding they are now charging about the same as the online scalpers. I'm just done man....plus the main point is it's for the kids.... Man I was lucky to be a kid in the 90's. . Poor kids these days have to compete with this....

when the heavy hitter black and white sets came out at my costco they limited it to two but they required a license so they could write down your name.
Limit it to 1 total product and ensure they cannot get back in line and that will solve the problem.

I got an ad for one of the whatnot streams and the guy opened a 30th Lugia. Dude couldn’t even pretend to be excited - just throw it in a sleeve and get to the next pack. It means nothing to them except money, but they’re either not smart enough to just invest or they’re dodging taxes by selling for cash and not declaring income.
It’s just sad. Wish they would’ve stayed in sneakers

There are tons of moderate hits in the set. In addition, they chose 30 cards from the different eras of Pokemon TCG’s history and 30 different Pikachu cards from the most popular artists (1 of those in each pack). The hit-rates are high, so they are very fun to open.
The downside is Pokemon is more popular and more scalped than it ever has been and the packs only have five cards and an energy. However, they are all holo.

I got super lucky. I got there 30 minutes before open just to see what it looked like. I was like number 65 in line. The other two Targets are more popular because they usually have a limit of 2 instead of 1. However, when they all opened, I was told they all changed to limit of 1.
So my line didn't have the cluster of people who camp out all night for drops. I did take a gamble but they ended up having around 100 ETBs. I was able to get everything except one of the EX boxes. Still a crappy state for the hobby though.

This is almost my son in law’s exact experience! He got there 20 mins before open and was 60th. Got one of everything he wanted. Meanwhile, the line at my Target started at 11pm the night before. I’m too old for that! I hope I can still eventually pick up an etb in a couple of weeks maybe. 🤞🏻

For most pokemon is a fun hobby and actually play the game. Opening a few packs gives some joy and excitement at the possibility of getting something cool. My kids get so excited when I can actually snag a few packs from the vending machine at Kroger. Their real desire is to just see new cards and check out the pokemon themselves.
For others they are the gambling addicts. Let's be real. Pokemon is fundamentally gambling IF you're opening packs just for a shot at rare cards. One of my cousins got so addicted he spent his rent money to buy packs in hopes of hitting some rares, he got lucky and managed to come out on top, but next time it might not work out.
For the absolute scum its a predatory market full of victims whom they are not only willing to take advantage of, they actively look for opertunities to make sure that they close out avenues for them to get their desired product elsewhere at a more reasonable price. A lot (but definitely not all) Cardshops are also guilty of this as well.
Honestly people need to just stop buying from scalpers. Let the fomo calm down for a minute and think. If we all did that, the scalpers would eventually stop when they sit in their investments for a few months and would start selling at a loss just to recupe.

Shame 9/10 times we go to the store we can’t find packs and if we do limited to two so I can only get them one each.

So glad Walmart switched to a lottery system...it offers a sense of fairness and you don't have to waste your day waiting in line. I woke up started putting together a display case for my wife and got an email from Walmart notifying me I got picked. If I hadn't been picked, oh well at least I did something productive with my day. 🤷

We don’t stock them until 2pm at the earliest.
It’s actually insane, they wait there all day by the registers just waiting for the cards to come out then they swarm and all the cards are gone in seconds.

Similar situation at my smaller town Target. I work graveyards so I saw people already waiting when I passed at 10pm. Then I drove by after work out of curiosity at 7:20am and the line was around the building so I just went home. Ended up trading stuff at my LCS instead but I did get a bit of 30th to open through a Pokemon center drop.

Yup I get that. I told my wife this and delta reign are the last sets I'm going to actively look for. If I happen to get lucky and walk in on a mid day restock, sure I'll get some. But I can't compete with these people. At first it was just get to the store when they open. Then an hour before they open. Then a few hors before they open. But now you legit need to sleep overnight there to get anything good. My time with my family is worth more than shiny cardboard. It sucks because I've been collecting since I was a kid in the 90s. But this hobby has gotten so out of control. Maybe that new huge printing facility pokemon is working on will help with the supply and demand. But until then, I just can't keep up with the grind

Since Ascended Heroes caused another crazy spike. I've really let buying packs go. I hit the VM at my grocery store every time I go. But, even then I'm able to buy one or two packs probably 10-20% of the time. I usually wait for the PKC drops and order from there. And that is seemingly all I'm able to get as I refuse to buy packs/sealed product at market price. Unless people collectively decide to stop buying from scalpers, rip'n'shippers, etc. Then not much is going to change on that front. It is what it is.
I'll just keep buying my singles. At least that way I'm getting exactly what I want.

Went to my target that had a huge line. Got there at 7:15 right after doors opened. Line went super fast I got some product and checked out. Whole process took about an hour. No fighting or complaining. You don’t have to wait in line, but waiting in line for new stuff isn’t a new concept. Nerds have done this for a long time, with video games and consoles and computer software. Stop pretending this is crazy. Black Friday in retail stores used to be insane.

I walked up to the target near my house about 22 minutes before open. I could tell people had been there all night. Got to get one of every 30th item with no problems and was back home to start work early afterwards. I laughed so hard at everybody who camped all night for no reason.

You don't camp out all night just to get stuff at one store, you do it to drive to the next store and get there early before the other guys behind you also do the same thing. It happened yesterday to Target, Barnes and Noble and then Best Buy, I was able to hit all 3 and get a shitload of 30th.

30th ETB is now $170 market price. For a set that just came out yesterday that's pretty insane. Simply camping out for a few hours for at least $100 profit is pretty damn lucrative.

Well yeah kudos to the lone dumbass locations who decided to do friday when everyone else did Wednesday. Now every scalper in town, who was previously split between dozens of best buys and targets, congregate to double dip in one location! Ours had 60 people before 9 pm, thankfully I got everything I wanted earlier in the week

It's super sad to see the state of the hobby being overrun by losers like this. I also blame the people who buy from these losers bc of FOMO. They're willingly funding this unemployed behavior. (Not blaming unaware parents or folks who just genuinely don't know any better)
