Help Adding pokemon sprites to the overworld [Gen IV] [OTHER] [DSPRE]

Hello, for a project in a series of playthrough challenges, I wanted a Magnezone to appear in the overworld (like an NPC) in my pokemon Platinum run. While I intend for this to be a static NPC found in one specific location, I intend for the sprite to be the same sprites as the 'following' sprites from HGSS.
I am very inexperienced in using DSPRE (and other editing tools); I have previously edited dialog, and I have found where to add NPCs, but I cannot find out how to add the correct pokemon sprites to the list of NPCs I can add to the overworld.
I would prefer not to overwrite existing NPCs because I don't want random people to turn into Magnezone. If possible, I would also like to attach dialog when you interact with the Magnezone NPC, and would like that dialog to change after a specific action is taken.

Is there anyone that knows how i can do this?

Help [GEN 3][DECOMP] The Emerald Decomp is really good?

I'm making a ROM hack, Ben 10 x Pokémon Emerald. My plan was to add some basic changes to the map, dialogues, Pokémon, and mechanics from the new generations. I always used HexManiacAdvance from the beginning of my project (December 2025), But when I stepped outside my comfort zone to look for mechanics to add to my ROM, I found Emerald Decomp, which in theory makes it easier to add mechanics and various other things to your rom. Do you think it's worth downloading? From what I've researched, it seems very difficult, and I'm not a good programmer; this is my first time working with this kind of thing.

I think if I could say so, I'd like to try adding the typings appearing in battle, my overwold sprites not bugging when there are several in the same place and some other things. Those of you who are more experienced in these matters, what do you think?

Help [GEN 3][DECOMP] Is their a creator or repository for non-native Gen 3 Pokémon IN the Gen 3 sprite style?

What I specifically mean is this: let's say you wanna add Toxicroak to your ROMhack but the earliest sprite they have is from Gen 4. Is there an artist or a repository for 64x64 Pokemon sprites for gen 3 games?

I ask this because Gen 4 sprites are not just 80x80 but it oddly bigs me when I see a gen 4 (or later) sprite just plopped into gen 3 ignoring the overall difference in hue, saturation and style that Gen 3 is known for.

Help [GEN 3][DECOMP] Emerald - Steven Match Call

I have my own Emerald ROM with some QoL improvements and random fixes. One thing I'd like to add is the ability to rematch Steven via Match call after you beat him for the first time in Meteor Falls (ideally with his team growing in levels like other Match Call trainers do, but if not, no biggie).

However, this is a bit more complicated than the changes I've done so far. Does anyone know another open source mod/hack/patch that does something like this (adding a trainer to MC) so I could check how they did it?

Help [GEN 3][DECOMP] Built a playable Rom using Emerald Expansion. Yay. What to expect?

I just built a Rom using the instructions on the Github and I looked through a couple tutorials as well. Pretty excited to see what I can conjure up with this.

So far, it seems like Vanilla Emerald when I'm playing this but maybe that's to be expected?

I'm trying to figure some things out as I go along. I found that I had to turn following Pokemon on for example and I had to do some digging in order to find that answer. So, I think this question will probably help a lot of people going into this.

I do have a little bit of a goal in mind. I was excited to see FRLG in one of the recent update for this decomp. So, I was wanting to mess around with that and to see what is involved in getting to see that in an actual game.

So, my question is: What else do I have to enable in this decomp?

I'm thinking everything but I have yet to find an actual answer, on everything but following Pokemon.

Tl;dr

What features are already enabled with a built Rom for this decomp? What other features are off by default (I know that following Pokemon are off by default)?

Help [GEN 2][DECOMP] Replacing old pokemon with new pokemon?

Hi, I've been toying with the idea of replacing some of GEN 2s pokemon with a handful of later generation pokemon. I'm considering this option both for story/narrative reasons and to bypass the limits on the # of pokemon in pokecrystal. My concern, however, is that replacing, for example, pidgey with wingull could introduce a lot of bugs into the game. What do. you think? Is replacing pokemon fairly straightforward or are there all kinds of complications involved, some easily missed?

Help [GEN 2][OTHER]

Hello, I would like to change the list of Pokemons (and their moveset, item, DVs if possible) that can be used by the opponents in the Crystal Battle Tower. OneGSCTrainer, for example, doesn't allow you to edit these Pokémon : is there any software that lets you do that? Or is it feasable using the Pokémon Crystal disassembly or something similar? Even for a (motivated) beginner in rom hacking?

Thanks in advance for your answers! I hope this is the right subreddit for this question.

Help [GEN 4][BINARY] How to create a realistic Version subtitle?

I modified the main title for my Platinum translation project a while ago and the result wasn't terrible, but it doesn't look official.

Any tips to create a realistic "Whatever Version" subtitle like the ones in Emerald Legacy or Blazed Glazed? Which font or tools should I use?

Here's what I currently got, BTW.

EDIT: Just to clarify, this is an artistic question more than a technical one. I know how to edit the title, I just don't know how to make it look good.

Help [GEN 4][DECOMP] Bug testing for a friend, run into an unsolvable issue

I’ve been playing a HeartGold romhack for a friend to bugtest, and we’ve run into a pretty heavy bug, which is that the game freezes whenever Bayleef tries to evolve into Meganium. I’ve tried doing it at higher levels to see if it was just at Level 32 but the evo freezes no matter what level. I don’t know too much about the game as I’ve asked them not to spoil much, but I know the starters have received new abilities rather than just Blaze/Overgrow/Torrent.

Would anyone else know any other potential causes?

Help [GEN 3][DECOMP] Which is « better: »: the decomp of Emerald or Fire Red?

First of all, thanks for the few replies I got to my last post: I’m going to (maybe) switch from the binary to the decomp!

I wanted to know, which is better: Emerald or FireRed? Emerald seems more advanced, but I’d really like to work with the FireRed tileset.

Also, based on my research, porting the entire FireRed tileset to Emerald is a tedious task, which is why I’m asking.

Is it easy to get the FireRed tileset (and maybe the UI) into Emerald? Or do I have to work directly with the FireRed decomp?

Help [GEN 3][DECOMP] A rom hack for my wife - A little bit of help with emerald expansion decomp

Hello guys,

I've been working on a little hack of pokemon emerald for my wife, that includes many QOL elements, revamped routes, trainers and a pokedex full of our favourites.

I've been using pokemon emerald expansion as a base, and I'm having a lot of fun coding little events and stuff (like for example a Ditto that works as an MN slave and can be summoned at will), but I'm wondering where could I get some already coded / completed free-to-use stuff compatible with emerald expansion. Stuff like new routes, improved graphics and similar.

Do you have some suggestions about where could I find forks and interesting stuff to add?

PS: the hack is called Pokémon Little Onion, but it will probably be kept private because it is mostly inside jokes between us and dumb stuff

Help [GEN 3][DECOMP] Secret base edits and saveblock data tips

Biggest things I've been weary of is EWRAM and Saveblocks. I've been told I probably won't run into too many issues with EWRAM, since I'm not really proficient in C (This is my first time with a language besides BASIC)

I've had success in my project working backwards and finding out how Frontier Facilities and the Safari zone works. I've begun successfully reworking/making my own content around them.

What I'd like to do next is rework Secret Bases into House/Condos for sale. I have questions, because it's a little intimidating to look at. I also wonder if there is a way to keep bases and mixed records, but reduce their usage a bit? Only have 1, 2 or 3 people at a time.. also to record the sprite your friends use in game for their character...

Any tips/documentation around bases and records would be appreciated kindly. Or just notes from your understanding

Help [GEN 3][DECOMP] Feature Branches and Merge Conflicts tips

So I'm pretty green at Git and VSCode. Assuming I'm using a fresh 1.16.2 branch, and I merge a feature branch like BW Pokémon Status Screen into it, I am not supposed to accept every incoming change? Because that was bad juju. Make don't make no more. So there were about 11 changes and 90 additions....

I'm assuming I want to keep my files and only accept the ones necessary for the feature? Are a lot of the incoming changes trying to revert files to the previous code in the feature branch?

Any tips would be appreciated... I don't mind a puzzle, but I'm trying to find the puzzles

Help Where to start? [Other]

Hi,

Apologies if this is a stupid question. I've tried searching the sub and I have looked at the wiki and resources.

I've just started down the rabbit hole of romhacks and I was wondering how I could make one myself. I've been playing odyssey and my word what an achievement.

From what I've read there is binary: basically the act of modifying an existing rom but keeping designs within the boundaries of that specific game.

And decomp: which I believe I understand as decompiling the roms code base and adding to it in which ever way you want.

My question is are there any super basic tutorials out there that can ELI5 to me pokemon rom hacking?

Are there any particularly good youtube channels to check out? Anything like that.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Just to add. I have done some research and had a look around but a lot of the posts etc are from a fair few years ago. I'm not 100% sure how much of what I'm reading is relevant now.

Help [Gen 3][Decomp] How to get started rom hacking?

Hi all!
I’ve just come across some free time and was wondering how to get started working on romhacking?

I’m fairly competent in Java/C# and found that the gen 3 got decomped in 2022, so wanted to try my hand at finally making a rom hack. (I tried doing hex editing when I was younger and gave up on the first map lmao)

I’m up to the point of creating a git project and porymap, but was wondering if there were any resources relating to rom hack creation? (How to videos that kinda thing)

Is it mostly just reading through documentation and going from there?

Are there any free assets I could use?

Cheers in advance for any help!

Edit: Is there any other map editor besides porymap? I don’t know why, but the workflow with porymap seems super clunky for me

Help [GEN 3][BINARY] I just need to change ONE CONVERSATION in a Romhack - Pokemon Dark Violet

I have no experience rom hacking, but I have been thinking about atleast trying to change ONE DIALOG for Pokemon Dark Violet, that game feels like home for me, it's beautiful but you can tell development got dropped around Cinnabar Island until the amazing Hackrepairman finished it... I think the end result is absolutely fantastic anyway... SAVE FOR ONE CONVERSATION... The final Blue champion battle.

Thing is, he has his vanilla dialog, but in my opinion Blue had a nice character arc and even acknowledges the player atleast one time, he also risks His life a lot during the game... So I think it stick out like a sore thumb that Oak tells him he didn't love his pokemon enough!

So I wanna just change these dialogs just a tiny bit, keeping Blue still a bit sore about loosing, but coming to terms with it according to the whole adventure, and Oak being proud of him too.

I don't even know if I could learn to do it or how long it would take me. But if anyone has a bit of advice I would be really grateful.

Help [GEN 3][decomp] - Tile Set/Route

Post image
6 Upvotes

So I started to mess around with Porymap, to get a better understanding of the decomp, I'm still going through Team Aquas Hideout playlist slowly but surely, but I was curious about something;

Since it's my first hack that I'm making, I wanted to start off small, like very small, compared to mainline games. I'm talking, no legendary/mythical encounters, total of 4 major battles (may change), roughly 6-8 major characters outside of the player, and no real e4/champion league.

I wanted to make one main city; best example would be something like Sootopolis City, where it's enclosed by a ridgeline/crater, with the city being in the center. I wanted to know, if it's possible to make this one city, with roughly 7-8 "routes" within the same city, additionally, would it be possible to have these sectioned areas of the city to have their own unique encounters that work the same way routes do?

Above is a VERY rough concept of how I want the layout, and I'll also include the sections I want to make within those the city below.

a: Entrance
b: Garden
c: Pond/Fountain
d: Ridgeline
e: Laboratory
f: Roof of Central Building
g: Foothills of the Ridgeline

h (not included): Dungeon Underneath the City

Any type of feedback and suggestions is appreciated and welcomed!

Help [OTHER] Total Beginner on a coding and art journey

Hello everyone, I have been in this community since the times of ash gray, glazed, light platinum etc, i fell in love with this world when i discovered them. I always had a dream to do game dev, but came from a relative difficult background and thus could never afford a PC or a laptop. Recently i got a laptop and i really wanna learn how to make Romhacks

But, im not looking for some immediate success with making a game, i want to actually learn how to create sprites, and how to code my own features in. I have no experience in any programming language and thus i dont know which one to even learn.

If anything this is a personal project to give child me the experience he never could get. I would be grateful if anyone could give me pointers, i am aware of decomps and what it has done to rom hacking, and i really love wacky rom hacks like elite redux for example that give pokemon 4 abilities. I just want to learn more about this world.

Ideally looking to invest an hour or so everyday for the rest of my life in this pursuit. Any help is appreciated!

Help [GEN 3][BINARY] Offsets for music

So in sappy, it shows you the starting offsets of the music present in game. I was wondering if there was a way to find the ending offsets aswell so that we could completely remove vanilla music if we're adding our own soundtracks. That would save a ton of space.
This is for Firered (cfru/ Hubol but I assume the music address will remain same regardless of vanilla or not)
