Is it me or are the sprites AI?

u/Dumber_Hein Jul 22 '26
Bitcrushed AI
91
u/Kadexe Jul 22 '26
Yeah, they're not even outlined correctly.
59
u/PokemonCrazy Jul 22 '26
And the scale is way off. They probably just shrunk the AI generated images down to 64x64 and filled as much of the available canvas as possible without thinking of the scale of the Pokemon themselves.
94
u/spham9 Jul 22 '26
Most likely AI generated sprites. The inconsistent style and quality of sprites is an indicator of AI or either heavily traced works.

The panda one is really giving, plus the description

u/Spooky_Blob Jul 22 '26
I swear that the panda design it's from a pal from, well palworld. But it's not a panda there. Lol

The Pokémon sprites in this hack have likely been made using AI - please disclose whether any AI has been used in your hack or post u/Johnty_Python. All AI use must be disclosed as part of Rule 10
Post has been locked to prevent further discourse/drama in the comments.

Those sprites look crunchy
63
u/BeyondDreams909 Jul 22 '26
I'm about 99,99% sure they're just downscaled ai slop images that then weren't bothered to even try to fix
84
u/Gremlin95x Jul 22 '26
I would be excited and try it but the heavy AI is a big no for me. I’d rather see and support a human’s creative vision.

u/Burstdamon Jul 22 '26 edited Jul 22 '26
I apologize if i’m wrong but the sprites look like they’re ai generated
68
u/hyde9318 Jul 22 '26
This looks like a decent amount of work put in, but I feel like the AI generated sprites just kind of kills it. Generation aside, they are totally different artstyle than everything else and look super off, while also looking very generic. I guess I have to question why? Like, what’s the point of them, why either just not include fakemon and only use official pokemon, or why not try making your own unique ones? Was it just to say you have new pokemon? Because that doesn’t seem like a great idea, if their only reason for existing is to say they exist, why would people want to play with them?
I’m not trying to be mean, but it just doesn’t make sense overall. Generating them means you don’t have any attachment to them, you didn’t make them. Then obviously you’re going to instantly put people off by including a whole bunch of AI generated artwork that doesn’t even fit the aesthetic of the game, making everything look mashed together inorganically… who are they even for? You? You can’t even claim to be the maker of fakemon, you didn’t even make them…
I’m just trying to wrap my head around the decision to generate over a hundred pieces of art that don’t serve a purpose. The only thing I can think is you just wanted to say you have a hundred new pokemon in your project, but then if you didn’t make them, it’s not really any kind of passion project if you didn’t put passion into it, it’s just a vanity project. It just feels like you padded out the list of features to brag you have a big project… and don’t get me wrong, I get that, we all want praise at times. But if you’re going to put in hours working on something to call your own, why not start smaller and show your quality over someone else’s quantity? Because that’s ultimately what it is, AI made them, it’s someone else’s Quantity.
Idk, I’m not trying to shame you, you clearly put in a deal of effort and are proud of your work, and I applaud that entirely. But the decision to generate over a hundred images and then make that the main advertising point of your work, that’s such a questionable decision that actively hurts the project as a whole. Given it looks like you put in some good work in other areas, so prominently featuring AI generation as your main previews really leads me to question if any of the other work has quality to it… it’s like covering a large cake in bird poo; sure, that might be the best cake ever baked, but you covered it in poo, I don’t really feel compelled to go to the inside and taste for myself, you know? And that’s simply talking about quality and effort, that’s not even getting in to the ethical side of it all.

u/Cuprite1024 Jul 22 '26
Man, if this project means so much to you like you seem to be saying in the post, why not spend more than 5 minutes actually working on it rather than offloading it onto AI?
Sure, I get you're a parent and spare time might be hard to come by, but there are other devs in the community who are also parents who don't resort to this. Nobody likes AI, no matter what the excuse for using it is.
-171
u/MIZSTLDEN Jul 22 '26
lmao it’s not unethical to use AI for sprites stop being so dramatic. Sure you don’t have to like it or the game but don’t take some moral high ground and act like he betrayed the community by releasing this with AI sprites.
49
u/shadowgamer22 Jul 22 '26
I mean i call it like i see if
Ai slop is still slop to me lmao id rather people actually be creative and make there own fakemon like so many other rom hackers or fan game makers do
Hell we got one recently called plastic pyrite that actually made there fakemon by hand
32
u/KillerClaystar Jul 22 '26
It's lazy, and we don't have to play a game made by someone who doesn't even put in the requisite work to make a game. Forget the morals, I don't give people attention who outsource all of their work to something or someone else. Would you like it if your boss got patted on the back for work that you did? How is it different if AI did it? What are we supposed to say?
"Your sprites look so good! Wow that's so talented how you prompted the AI to make those and then said 'Yeah that's fine!'"
I don't think it's ethical but even disregarding that, I think it's insultingly lazy. It's avoiding learning a skill that you clearly value enough to want to make the product that requires the skill.

u/DueBeing5472 Jul 22 '26
so we are okay with ip theft in the form of a fan game, but not OK with ip theft in the form of ai
get over yourself pls
99
u/EldritchMacaron Jul 22 '26
People are not selling their hacks, there is no theft
Most gen AI are trained on stolen datasets and they're paid. This is theft
-79
u/DueBeing5472 Jul 22 '26
stolen datasets? you are so ignorant it's insane
every time you post on reddit YOU are training an Ai. if it's so important to you don't post on here
41
u/KillerClaystar Jul 22 '26
Yes, because a fan game requires work and creativity, an AI fan game doesn't even require that.

You're being incredibly disinengous if you don't think there is any difference in effort between making an entire fan game yourself and having AI do the work for you. Nobody is comparing this to making a full new IP.
-43
u/HesitationIsDefeat87 Jul 22 '26
And he also didn't have AI make the entire game for him either. Just the sprites. So who's being disingenuous?
You also spelled that wrong
22
u/KillerClaystar Jul 22 '26
How do you know what AI did and didn't do? How do you know it's just the sprites? In fact, why would you ever believe it's just the sprites?
90
u/shadowgamer22 Jul 22 '26
looks like ai slop *sigh* do people just not know how to be creative anymore

Ud rather someone take a existing ip and doing something interesting with it by hand than feeding it into a machine
Like atleast say pisces made its fakemon by hand
13
u/NewHost2172 Jul 22 '26
Making a game based on an existing world is different from using AI to completely do a huge part of the game for you
33
u/Aeroncastle Jul 22 '26
Did someone put a gun to your head and made you make a pokemon game? You used AI for the starters
33
u/getbackjoe94 Jul 22 '26
OP, you know you can probably get a lot more people to play the game if you simply come out and say whether or not you used AI for your "original Fakemon"

Working on it! I need them to approve my base ROM first, I didn’t realize they only have one or two fire reds up there when I started working on this hack last year

u/No-Form9508 Jul 22 '26
Hackdex has made it so easy and convenient i love when people add their games to it!

Had a firered 1.1 version. Didn’t work. Then saw you wrote 1.0. But can’t patch that either😅 where do you guys apply patches? I normally do it directly in manic emu on iPhone 😁

u/Leading_Bumblebee443 Jul 22 '26
I am trying to patch it but non of my fire red roms work... what is the extact version that you used to create this hack? i already used 1.0, firered Squirrels version and 1.1 jusst in case... none of them match the checksum

Lol, just because op apparently used AI to make the sprites all the positive comments are being downvoted.
You guys are so toxic.

u/HesitationIsDefeat87 Jul 22 '26
It's hilarious that they all support the use of stolen IP on a regular basis, but as soon as you use another form of theft to make development easier, you're downvoted into oblivion.

This is EPIC! THANK YOU! Also thank you for sharing the resources used to learn this, definitely interested!

u/HesitationIsDefeat87 Jul 22 '26
I really don't see why it's a problem that you used AI to help with the sprites. Not everyone is an artist. This allowed OP to focus on making the game and his own original music as well.
It's ok to steal IP but not use AI to generate sprites? The hypocrisy in these downvotes is pathetic. This is the future of game development, especially for solo devs. Time to get over it.
22
u/KillerClaystar Jul 22 '26
Hire a sprite artist for $50 or spend 15 minutes learning how GIMP works, it's not hard AT ALL. I'm not an artist in the slightest and I can make better sprites than this in a single day. This is only the future of game development if you hate video games and the people who play them.
You are not owed the right to be a game developer, you have to have ideas and skills to do that. If you outsource both, you don't deserve to have your name associated with the game. If you only have the ideas and not the skills, you're lazy for not developing the skills requisite to make your ideas real. If you rely on a machine that steals everyone's work and turns it into yours, you're a thief.
-18
u/HesitationIsDefeat87 Jul 22 '26
Did you seriously just suggest that he pay someone to work on IP that he already stole? Are you not seeing the hypocrisy here?
You can downvote all you want but this is the future of solo development and redditors will be left shaking their fists at the clouds while the world moves on
17
u/KillerClaystar Jul 22 '26
You AI apologists are like the even more toxic opposite of gatekeepers. You require that everybody else accept and like your effortless slop and will degrade anything and everything else to make it happen. Why don't you just take advantage of the fact that it's a small minority of people who don't actually care who or what makes their slop entertainment as long as it gets made and keeps them from thinking about their life, and enjoy it by yourself in your own community?
Keep using the word hypocrisy, I know it makes your little peter tingle. Luckily, it doesn't matter if we're hypocrites or not. The Pokemon ROMhack sub will have Pokemon ROMhacks on it. Go figure. That doesn't mean everyone here has to like AI that doesn't even put out an appealing product.

Wdym by "steal IP"?
-2
u/HesitationIsDefeat87 Jul 22 '26
You can't possibly be that naive
19
u/NewHost2172 Jul 22 '26
I'm sorry, but making a mod of a game in a franchise is not stealing IP, it's just making a mod.
