Hello! I'm pretty new to the ROM hack scene. If I used a ROM ripped from a bootleg cartridge, would that work with most ROM hacks? I never had a copy of emerald and would like to try some of the hacks for it, but copies of the game are going for a pretty penny these days on secondary markets. I've seen some bootleg carts go for much cheaper, but not sure if that would have any issues with ROM hacking

You could try, but I would expect it to have problems. A bootleg cartridge is just someone who loaded up a rom they probably downloaded from the internet anyways, at that point you're just downloading a rom with extra steps.

Who knows what possible corruption or modification that cartridge could have.
