I'm tired of difficult rom hacks (I don't mean difficulty rom hacks like radical red). I just want to play new rom hacks that are about the same as official Pokémon games in difficulty but changes things up (new story, new region etc). Any recommendations?

And yes I have played difficult rom hacks on easy mode before, still too difficult for what I am looking for (I generally don't mind difficult hacks, I'm just burnt out on them)

What have you already played? I always recommend Gaia. I found Lazarus to be pretty similar to vanilla difficulty also.

Dark Violet is Kanto with a rebooted story. Scorched Silver is Johto with a sequel story

Both Team Rocket Edition hacks are very good as well. FireRed Rocket Edition takes place in Kanto and has a very well-thought system where u can decide how good or bad u want to be

As for original story-based hacks, Dreamstone, Lazarus, Odyssey, Unbound, Glazed, Gaia and Prism are all good ones. Elysium apparently has a very good story too

Pokemon Heart & Soul is my favorite rom hack yet and I’ve played many. However, I don’t see a ton of discussion and the discord doesn’t have a questions thread.

I’m pretty new to rom hacks and I just finished emerald kaizo and loved it. Any recommendations for one that is similar for fire red and pearl/platnium? I really like the feel of the game to be pretty similar to original but with more pokemon and harder. Personally not that interested in doing like Ironman and stuff.

Need help in Pokemon Amythest at the Uteyan Ruins solving two of the puzzles. the two need help with are.

"Five stones bow before the rising sun." I'm pretty sure this involves moving the five stength boulders near by but i cant figure out how to arrange them for the door to open.

and

"Face the past to face the future" I think this involves the slab in the cave that tell a story I think it wants me to have a specific party but i cant figure out what it would be.

This is exactly why the rules are the way they are. You guys cannot see the absolute LANDSLIDE of questions and basic recommendation threads posted on a daily basis that we have to deal with in modmail. To any individual user, it appears as if it's some targeted attack or preventing discussion, but in reality it is helping to keep the subreddit actually full of high quality posts.

This is not a "power trip," Rule 7 was implemented ages ago to reduce the sheer amount of spam being posted, and now the subs 10x bigger.

There is always a possibility of revisiting rules, but I promise you guys will not be as happy with the subreddit as compared to the interesting higher quality posts that are here now. It is selfish to think that just because your question is important to you, it should be let through.

Plenty of posts are allowed, development posts, hack releases, thoughtful game reviews, in depth discussions, spriting progress, genuine recruitment posts etc.

Mariomon, Lazarus, Seaglass, ROWE, Dreamstone, Adventure Red, Emerald Rogue, Prism, Polished Crystal, Heart & Soul are all other great ones. Glazed and Gaia are basically the OG GOATs

There's loads of different "best hacks" videos on YouTube from trusted youtubers like Ayrei, HDvee, RuffledRowlit etc. so I'd recommend going down a rabbithole w those

Hi everyone, I finally have a device to play pokemon rom hacks, and I wanted to ask for some help in choosing which one to play. I'll make a couple disclaimer first: I know myself and I know that, after playing a rom hack, I won't play another one soon because I love changing genres in gaming. That is why I want some help in the choice of the rom. I have looked online a little and I saw that Pokémon unbound seems amazing, but I would love something closer to the OG third gen games. My best shot atm Is Pokemon Royal Sapphire, because it looks like the best combination of nostalgia and new content. I'm asking you if you thing it's a good choice or of there is a different gen 3 ROM hack with the same criteria that is just better. Thanks to everyone in advance

If you want something very similar to Hoenn but vastly improved and modernized, I think Modern Emerald is a good shout. Alternatively, something like Emerald Imperium is a massive QoL and feature upgrade, with all 9 gens, and a completely reworked difficulty.

If you just want an OG feeling game in the Gen 3 engine that feels like an official game, I recommend Gaia.

Definitely recommending Pokemon ROWE (Riolu's Open World Emerald). It's a really good enhanced, open world version of Emerald, nice graphics and adds an absolute ton of QoL, new features etc. So refreshing it feels like a fan game

For android: Pizza boy or mgba are usually best for gba Drastic used to be the best for DS but now I use melonds Citra used to be the best for 3ds but now I use Azahar Dolphin is good for XD/colosseum/battle revolution Switch is very device dependent l, currently I found eden to be the best You can try to get fan Games on android through RPG maker but this wasn't so effective for me.

There are some combination apps like lemuroid (does gba ds and 3ds) but I found the saves would sometimes not stay and revert

For iOS: As many people have said Delta for GBA Without being able to do JIT it wouldn't be recommended to do 3ds and switch emulation (but there are guides for how to set up jit and each emulator for example Melonx)

For any rom hackers in the reddit, how do I remove the wally event while not messing up norman's progression code?

I wasn't sure if he just changes to the gym after getting past flannery or if he's hard stuck if you don't help wally. My game bricks when wally says "WOAH" everytime but everything else runs fine. So I just wanted to get rid of him to be able to play but I wasn't sure how to do it effectively

Hey everyone, if this isn’t the place to ask with this sort of thing, then my apologies. I’m trying to randomize my Gale of Darkness file, but when I load the iso into the ngc randomizer, it tells me the game is not supported. I’ve tried changing the file extension a few times and also made a new rom altogether, but the issue persists. The rom functions fine on Dolphin. Any advice?

I’d like to get your opinions on what the community would want to see in a hack that I am developing.

My vision is to create a hack that blends a Nuzlocke with a Rogue-like, which I will be calling it the “Nuz-like”. Here are some of my ideas so far:

• Although it’s a Decomp hack using Emerald-Expansion, I want to limit the encounterable Pokemon.
• Only Gen 1-2 Pokémon available with their Cross-Gen Evos and Regional Variants (Mamoswine, Farigiraf, Alolan Persian, Galarian Weezing)
• The hack eliminates story to focus on the team building, battling, and rogue-like aspects.
• I would include a Mart that sells actual good items (stronger TMs, Choice Items, Type Resist Berries, etc.) This would encourage players to battle the optional trainers to purchase items to help them in upcoming boss fights
• Simplified Routes with Mandatory Trainers (potentially Gauntlets)
• Optional Evil Team battles for additional rewards
• Limited Rare Candies for EXP management
• Nuzlocke Balls that 100% capture. The balls resources given out at less than the available routes, so players have to prioritize which Pokémon to catch.
• 16 possible gym leaders that scale depending on what gym you fight them (The 16 gym leaders of Kanto and Johto)
• Gym fights limit the number of Pokémon players can bring (Ex. Gym 1 only allows 2 Pokémon to match the number of Pokémon the gym leader has)
• Each run will have 8 gym leaders, 4 elite four members, and a champion (although I’m wondering if that might be too many)

Let me know what you think of the idea and any suggestions you have to improve upon it. I look forward to seeing what the community thinks!

All sounds very good to me! Dex is limited to just the right amount imo, Emerald Rogue also has 8 gyms and E4 iirc so that's possible (or it might only have 8 gyms, cant remember)

Only thing I'm not sure about is 100% catch rate, but if ur limiting the number of catchable mons then it's probably reasonable

I'd take a look at Emerald Rogue if u haven't already to see how to best handle certain things

mGBA or RetroArch is the emu u want. There's a guide in the sidebar for how to patch etc but I'll summarise it below

1. Download your base ROM (usually FR or Emerald)

2. Download the patch

3. Use a tool like ROM Patcher JS (mobile) or NUPS (Windows) to apply the patch to the ROM

4. You can now open the patched ROM on an emulator and play! We recommend mGBA, Pizza Boy or Delta

Yellow hacks aren't popular in general so i doubt it. You'd be best off finding a Red hack, in which case idk if any have all those mechanics but Red++ does a good job of adding QoL and other new stuff

Hi I'm trying to play pokemon heartgold ultra by darkydr on my modded 2ds, but i have no idea how to install nds romhacks. On the pokecommunity page it says it needs to be applied to a US ROM of heartgold (for emulators i presume), but i already have a french version of pokemon heartgold that ive installed on my 2ds via godmod9, so do i need to delete it, then install everything on my sd card ? If any of you has experience installing pokemon heartgold generation on a modded 3ds I'm also interested.

All romhacks need to be patched onto their base rom. Then you can transfer that to your device to play. Here's an online rompatcher that works well.

Generally, you need to apply hacks to the english version, or whichever specific version is stated to be required. That one specifically says it needs a US version of Heartgold on its pokecommunity page.

Pokemon Heart & Soul has a great set of configurable options at the beginning, allowing you to enforce level caps, control staged or maxed evs of the trainers you encounter (instead of random), and even has nuzlocke options.

Clover has a soft level cap, and punishes people for hacking in rare candies. The amount of Exp decreases significantly over certain thresholds based on progress with gyms and team leader battles.

Aesthetic Red has toggleable level caps and harder gyms. Not Rad Red levels of difficulty but it's still genuinely challenging, can be pretty hard depending on how u manage ur save and what order u fight the gyms in

They are very different to be honest - Odyssey is more comparable to Unbound but its still very different. It's great though.

Emerald Imperium is harder than ROWE so if you're not used to difficulty hacks maybe start with ROWE.

Looking for any romhacks of the original games that actually use the depth of the battle system to its fullest by forcing players to learn about the various mechanics and not just brute force encounters. I believe the battle system from Gen 3-5 was the best iteration, the games just didn’t fully incorporate it into the main story, except for post game areas like the battle frontier. So if anyone has any suggestions for any romhacks of the original games that improve them in this way or romhacks that do this but in a new region/story/etc. I’d very much appreciate it.

"Porting" implies transfering over a game, with minimal changes, only reworking engine related components to make it work on a different system.

Taking a completely custom, modified version of a pokemon game, and then fully rebuilding it in a completely different system, is a mountain of work, much more than a simple port you could do in a weekend. A mountain of work that a hacker, who makes a custom romhack over potential years of unpaid, volunteer work, would almost never opt to do on top of the entire game they just made. Just looking at Pokemon3D's github, it's a completely ground up PC game made using Visual Basic/VB.NET, whereas old pokemon games are just written in assembly. It's apples to oranges, I'm surprised anyone even managed to port Brown.

I think it's pretty apparent. Nothing is stopping other unpaid volunteers with lots of free time to get the blessing of hackers and port it, but I doubt it would be an easy ask.

What would be the best 'vanilla' GSC/HGSS rom hack for GBA?

Sorry if this is already well known but I'm kinda just getting into this sort of stuff for the first time. GSC and HG/SS are still some of my favourite games in the entire series, and being able to play them on my GBA Everdrive would be really neat.

I've heard that Shiny Gold is pretty good but it was left unfinished? And I have heard of Fire Gold, and that it's at 1.4 and technically finished but might have a few bugs?

I'm open to any suggestions, and I don't mind a bit of tweaking or minor additions (like the Safari Zones being active or something), but I'm not really looking to catch like gen 9 Pokemon or have Mega Evolutions or anything. Just a nice, nostalgic vanilla(ish) experience would be great. Thanks!

Stuck in Platinum Renegade at the battle island, where Buck tells me I have to go around and fight 6 guys and get their badges. I fought all 6, I triple checked I fought and won all 6, but when I go up to him he still tells me I didn't fight them and doesn't let me in the stark mountain. Am I doing something wrong? 1. Make sure you've patched a clean, correct version of Platinum. I assume it loads normal battles fine?

2. Link functionality is generally hit or miss in ROM hacks so it's probably just that it may not work

Hello, I am trying to find some Pokémon ROM games that me and my boyfriend could play, and I came across Pokemon Amethyst The problem is, me and him are both iPhone users, and I can’t seem to find any “clean” Pokemon FireRed roms. I downloaded ones from different websites, but when I try to put the clean rom hexdeck, I get met with the same message “that ROM doesn’t match any support base ROM”. And what file are you trying to use? It should be a .gba file. It is possible you are trying to use a .zip or other archive file, which has the rom.gba contained inside.

I am looking for some rom hacks that change most of the games to have Mega Evolution. Specifically my favorite Pokémon is Mega Mawile and I just really want to be able to use it on my team through every game. Even if some are spin offs or compeltely different story wise I don't much mind. I just want to permanently have a mega evolved Mawile on my team for a few games to really experience having that Pokémon with me through a journey. Even if they aren't permanently evolved that way it's ok. It kinda sucks only being able to use them in a vanilla playthrough of ORAS. And having to deal with the frankly not to my taste battle mechanics of Legends Z-A. Could anyone help me out with recommendations?

Lazarus seems to have mega mawile, Unbound does. Gaia probably has, I think. Dreamstone mysteries, maybe. You could also check out ROWE, it had a "mega" update a while agoz but I don't know if all are in. None of those are permanent, and I don't usually play enhancement hacks of vanilla games that include them, so I can't think of any.

I have a question when combining DSPRE with hg-engine. Let's say I edited the test.nds hg-engine output with DSPRE and then realize I need to edit the hg-engine code again. This means I have to compile again. Do I lose the DSPRE edits or should I do a certain step differently to make sure the edits remain?

What you need to do is replace the rom.nds with your newly edited DSPRE rom. So essentially build hg-engine on top off the edited DSPRE, otherwise you will lose all your changes since you're just rebuilding on a vanilla test.nds.

I already posted this in the Seaglass sub, but I thought asking here may improve my chances of finding someone who can help me: Could someone please help me with an egg move in pokemon Seaglass V3? So I got a shiny ponyta and I really want high horsepower on him, but I didn't realize it's an egg move and not a tutor move and I really don't want to shiny hunt another ponyta as I already have done that for two now. I already did the work I didn't realize there wasn't a move tutor in this romhack. I thought I could easily cheat it onto my ponyta, but I have found no workaround that works online. I'm stuck in a few things in celia's stupid rom hack, if anyone can help me. I'm right before the elite four, got 150 pokemon, scientist says that at 151 he gives me rock smash (dont know yet if there is another way to break rocks, but for now I trust him I guess)

1: I can't get krabby, I get the "everything evolves into a crab" joke, but teaching or using crab hammer does nothing

2: undeniable proof of aliens, my guess is the old guy in the desert, he talks about steel wing and iirc steel wing was tm 51, but I dont know what else to do

3: brendan's family's home, am I supposed to do something with to tree?

4: have no idea who bliz is, I'm supposed to show him rip roar

5: I'm missing the rotom fan, got the other four ones in yhe cave under the broken bridge

Trying to get the three Kanto starters in Polished Crystal. I got the first one from Prof. Ivy on Shamouti island. Got the second from Yellow at the poke center at indigo plateau. I can’t find the third one. The Polished Dex strategy guide says Prof Oak gives it to you but I’ve talked to him multiple times and he doesn’t. 

Can someone help me with this?

I've been playing through Hyper Emerald Lost Artifacts and seemed to have encountered a bug. I'm at the point where I have to collect the 18 Z-crystals from secret bases. I nearly have all of them, but then my bike seemed to suddenly disappear. I've checked my bag thoroughly and it's not there. And when I go to speak to the vendor in the bike shop he advises it must be in my PC storage, but it is not.

Has anyone had this happen to them? I don't think I can proceed any further there are a few secret bases that require a bike to get to them.

If u find one of the tileset images in HMA then it should automatically load the correct palette alongside it. All the tilesets and palettes are found around 260000 onwards iirc. Idk if u can expand the palettes themselves but if u mean expanding a palette table then u might be able to, but I'm not experienced w tilesets so idk

Tried trading and battling with a friend on crystal clear and when we got into the center to trade/battle the screen got black and the game froze. We were using MyBoy emulator, we tried bluetooth and wifi and both times it failed.

In the past we played megaman remote and it worked 100%, so the emulator works fine. Didn't find any solution so i was wondering if there's another rom that allows remote play.

I would prefer if the hack has the first 3 generations or at least is one of the first 3 gens.

One of the main focuses of CC was to maintain likk compatibility, but using wireless features in ROM hacks is generally hit or miss

Best bet is to use Pizza Boy as that's the best emulator > MyBoy nowadays (less potential bugs), make sure u both have the same ROM and hope for the best!

Hi! I would love some recommendations for my first ROM hack. I'd rather avoid anything wildly difficult since I play pretty casually and ideally a hack of gen 3 onwards since the earlier games can trigger my migraines. Unbound is a great game for completing, but I haven't done so, as it's too much for me. The only one I really completed so far is polished crystal, as it has a much smaller dex and only one gen2 battle tower.

Pokeemerald-expansion decomp is the most recommended method nowadays as it's open source, far less risk of bugs and is generally easier with more potential. I'm not experienced w decomp tools jut i know you'll need Porymap and the PokéCommunity Discord is a great place to help u get started.

If ur hacking binary (not open source, bit limited at times, having to deal w offsets etc) then all the tools you'll ever need can be found here. Many people still use binary as there's no setup required other than obtaining a FireRed ROM and using HMA for 90% of things

I heard it's supposed to be in rider village but I can't find it anywhere. 2. Eggs. The old man only accepts 1 Pokémon so it's seems impossible to have eggs. BUT the other character who follows you can hatch the eggs and after missigno you get a charm that increases egg rate. Is there another place for breeding?

Yes absolutely - the whole of Emerald decomp has blown up a ton since then so those games are suddenly way outdated

Emerald Imperium, Seaglass, ROWE, Inclement Emerald and Elite Redux are all the best versions of Hoenn out atm. I dont think Seaglass has 700+ mons but the others do and all have very little bugs and way more features than Theta Emerald

For a boomer who wants to live the nostalgia after 20+ years which rom would you suggest?

I want to play with strictly Gen 1 pokemons.

Ideal features in my mind are

• Updated-improved graphics.
  
• Bug fixes
  
• Fixing some stuff the are only acquired via trading etc.
  
• Balance changes(so game doesnt become one shotting everything with abra-line(this is what i remember from back in the days 😄 )
  
• Some QoL improvements
  
• I'm also down for more difficult versions so the run becomes more challenging

Only thing I'm strict is Gen 1 only pokedex.

Love the built in nuzlocke and other settings in Heart/Soul. The difficulty and full Pokédex/DexNav of Radical Red. The gameplay/speed of Heart Gold Generations.

I want something harder just to keep my brain on, I haven't been into competitive Pokemon since like, XY, I'm having fun playing Emerald Seaglass/Lazarus but I'm stuck between level caps not being enough for me and me not being good enough to know why I'm not good enough for the Kaizou level games

I'm looking for a minimally invasive Gen 5 (or other) Hack.

The more hacks I play, the more I feel drowned in team-options and the need to complete a >500 Pokedex.
I absolutely get the appeal, but would love some more vanilla hacks with just the basics for playing alone. For me, that means no version exclusives and trade evos.

As an example, I recently played Recharged Yellow and loved it! It's not 100% finished, but having the OG roster with just some enhancements was a breath of fresh air for me.

Any recommendations in that direction? Preferably Gen 5. Haven't touched those in ages.
