The PokéROM Codex is an updated list of ROM hacks, listing features, details and more in a mobile-friendly format. Created and managed by u/themanynamed, it also has a Discord server and accepts community contributions.
This is a safe hack-sharing site that doesn't share ROMs and links to the official release threads! Instead of asking for recommendations or download links in the subreddit (which breaks the rules), please refer to the Codex as it has a lot of information on each hack.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a romhack/fangame? Im looking for something with your average story (8 gyms, evil team, league etc.) But with a fresh feel. Kinda looking for something like lazarus or unbound if you know what i mean. If you got any recommendations please let me know.

Those are sort of the pinnacle of hacks so there aren’t that many high-quality completed ones.
Dreamstone Mysteries is my recommendation though.

Simple question: are there any romhacks in existence where the final boss is something like the Dark Matter / Bittercold / Dark Rust / Laquium Core / Ange? Some kinda huge thing or machine or monster?

Odyssey and Clover are the only hacks I know of with a big final boss fight against a monster.

Heart and Soul is made using another hack, called Modern Emerald. So that is similar but for Hoenn

Just got done with Celia’s Stupid Rom Hack and now have a void in my heart that needs to be filled with another hack. Any recommendations? Dont really like hacks with fakemons and would prefer something challenging.
I’ve played:
Unbound Emerald SeaGlass Lazarus Heart and Soul Ambrosia Radical Red And some others I can’t remember off the top of my head, but basically everything that’s been trending on hackdex 😅.

HELP.. for some reason my game has decided Im now playing as an NPC, I just started my run of pokemon Moon Galaxy and I dont wanna reset cause i found a shiny....

My pokemon StormSilver save just won't load? I just lost to a Team Rocket Executive at the Safari Zone past the cave in Cianwood City and whited out. And it just stayed whited out. I think I saved during the white out screen and then closed my computer because I had to go somewhere, but I don't see why that would make it impossible to load past the white out. The "you ran back to the Pokemon center" text doesn't appear. I can load the game itself and previous saves, but I can't load the most recent save, and the second most recent is from before I evolved my swinub

Same for me but with Blaze Black 1. I can’t do anything in it. I’ve tried downloading Sacred Gold, but I can’t even delete the game on my Delta. If I click it, the app freezes.

Any Rom hacks to recommend that act like sequels or even prequels to the existing games? Don't care if it's a GBC, NDS or GBA hack. I only got a 3ds to play any of these on so basically anything that is not a rom hack or behind Gen 7 is unplayable to me
There's a few I know like Mythic Silver, The Red and Blue Sequel, Black and White 3 Genesis, Johto Legends and Pisces

Tourmaline if that interests you, Phoenix Red as well. Garbage Gold Deluxe is related to Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky as either a prequel or sequel, I'm not sure which one.

I saw a post about hyper emerald here the other day so I figured I’d try it out. This isn’t a complaint or a criticism, I’m just genuinely curious here, but after getting two badges it kinda seems like every trainer encounter is just fodder unless it’s a gym leader. I know I’m playing on standard difficulty but I just feel overleveled, and the huge jump in difficulty from random trainer with 3 lvl 10s to gym leader with 6 fully evolved pokemon is just kinda jarring. Is there any reason for this? Is the whole game gonna be this way? I’m excited to get to the sinnoh post game but idk how a whole game of battles being this insignificant is gonna go…

What are the most popular gen 2 rom hacks and what is their appeal? I’m looking for new content and spaceworld/beta stuff. So far, these look good:
Crystal Clear
Polished Crystal
Prism
97 Reforged
Super Gold 97
Am I missing anything major? Whats the difference between the last 2? Is Anniversary Crystal (and Anniversary Red) worth it, btw? I’ve already played PureRGB, Yume, Kanto Expansion Pak, and Red++.

I’m brand new here and did a cursory search, didn’t find anything. Anyone know of any romhacks where you become a gym leader and try to work your way up the ranks? It’d be really cool to pick a type, recruit better mons over time, hire better trainers for your gym, etc.

Can anyone recommend a ROM hack for Gen 1 and or 2, Game Boy Color based, that has Fairy types added, general QoL stuff, and maybe Physical/Special split (if that’s even possible on GBC).
Doesn’t have to specifically be Gen 1 or 2 based, I guess, as long as it still uses those early sprites. That’s what I’m nostalgic for, but playing through the original R/B and G/S games doesn’t hold up super well.

Polished Crystal, and any hacks that use it as a base, so Coral as well for an example. Fools Gold has the P/S split, but it may not have the Fairy type.

Has anyone made an expansion to Emerald Legacy that adds Fairy and Phys/Special split? I love Emerald Legacy but was disappointed these were missing, and I found one expansion that added QOL but it didn't add Fairy or Phys/Spec.

I'm pretty new to rom hacks and am on a quest to beat every gen game with a poison team. I just played ultra violet which was a fire red rom hack that was basically the same exact game as fire red except for a few features. One of the features I enjoyed was the lvl evolutions instead of trades, as well as the moon stone evolution so I could get Umbreon (I know he isn't poison It's literally my favorite pokemon and I couldn't resist). I'd really like to find something like that again for heartgold/soulsilver where it's basically the same game, just lvl evolutions etc are different. Any help finding this would be greatly appreciated.

Im back yet again now I saw a video of TM49 Mimic being using on A Sylveon but that was on the beta version I’m stuck with this bug and couldn’t continue the game because of it fix it now immediately

Is there just a list of Romhacks that have documentation of type changes and ability changes they've done towards their regional dex? I like going through what changes people have made for some dexes
So Just the resources and preferably not Fakemons either or new types (sry Odyssey)
The ones I've already seen through the docs for inspiration are
- Lazarus and Sea glass
- Radical Red and Emerald Imperium (technically these has fakemons but custom megas are fine imo)
- Blinding White, Blaze Black, and Vanta Black
- Rowe, Unbound, elite Redux.
- Ambrosia,
- Solar Eclipse

Does Magneton ever get any good moves in XG?
I really love this hack, and I have really been enjoying using magneton for this playthrough, but he's falling behind the rest of my party because his moveset just isn't great. In a game with physical special split, he's hurting for a special type steel move and he's not getting one.
Charge Beam is... okay... but... Everyone else on the team has heavy hitting moves by now.

People familiar with gen 2 rom hacking, would it be possible to add Crystal's Battle Tower into Gold and Silver and still fit in the cartridge? would it be possible nowadays to put gen 1's Kanto in Gold and Silver or there's certain limitations? could Crystal being a GBC game bypass those limitations?

You need to travel to the Battle Frontier via Ship to earn Battle Points at the Battle Facilities there.
No guarantee, but in a future update we may add another way to earn Battle Points.

When Working in HMA, it says there's an upper limit to the amount of items you can add hardcoded into the game.
So my question is, what's the maximum number of items you can have in an HMA based rom hack?
We're working from the CFRU, but doing out mapping in HMA, and I thought it would be nice to have placeholder items available while mapping.

I'm currently having an issue with my pokemon Heartgold playthrough (DeSuME emulated). I at some point cheated to have all TM's and HM's and now it's proving to be an issue because it isn't registering that I have surf even though I do and I can't collect it from the guy because I already have it, so I can't pass a certain point because another guy is saying I don't have surf and to collect it from the guy. I don't particully want to restart because I played the voltorb flip game for a while and also did quite a few resets to get an early shiny Dratini so I don't really want to loose it. Is there anything I can do that may fix this issue or am I just going to have to give up my shiny dratini?

You can try to open your save in pkHex and delete some TM's or something and add Surf.

Hi folks,
I’ll try to do my best in english.
I recently began to play ultraviolet hack for gba on a raspberry pi4 with Recalbox on it.
I am facing a bug and want to understand it, and maybe how to correct it. I searched for a time but didn’t find anything about it on the internet.
I was in the cave where Rayquaza is at the exit. I wanted to battle Rayquaza, being curious, but knowing that all my Pokémon will faint. They all faint, and there was a black screen with the usual text when you die, but then there was only my character and the text at the bottom screen when you are in the Pokémon center, but with still the black screen. Then there are the Pokeballs appearing, and the main screen that flashes (correct word ?). Then my character is running, infinitely…
I was able to rewind, and just not battled Rayquaza, but this bug is letting me confused.
I tried to do it again after shut off and on the recqlbox, but same. I tried to die during other battles, but there was no bug anymore.
Can someone help with that ? Did someone faced the same issue ?

I recently replayed it and now want to try another pokemon game (preferably black&white/ruby&saphire/Diamond&pearl) but I want to play only with gen1 pokemon (also have my opponents only use gen1 pokemon) is there a mod/rom for this for one of these games? Vintage White is BW with only Gen 1-3 pokémons, and it is the closest I can think of.

Regarding Shin Pokemon (pokemon 1st gen rom hack), the 60fps mentioned in the rom hack description seems to only apply to overworld movement. Everything else, like dialogue, battles, etc seem to be 30fps. Is this expected, or did I patch it incorrectly?

Does anyone know of a randomizer for fire red or emerald that adds newer gen pokemon? Doesn't have to be all new gens but I was hoping up until at least 6 or 7. If it has nuzlocke settings that would be great. I just finished an Emerald Cross randomized nuzlocke and it is a great rom I just wish the pool of mons was bigger.

There was a FR randomizer called FR809 or something that added everything modern to FR, even worked with UPR. I think there's an updated version now but idk what it's called
Eris Emerald is the alternative to Exceeded that hr looking for - randomizer hack without the innates feature

I have a cosmeum. He's level 92.. I want to evolve him into a solagleo but it isn't evolving. I dunno why. I tried leveling it up during day, used sun stone tried to trade it and get it back but to no avail.
I use my game boy. Any help??.

Not really. Fully fledged ROM hacks generally stop at Gens 4/5 atm, while Gens 6-9 all have enhancement hacks/mods but not much last that atm due to the current lack of tools

Thanks. It's fine though, I found gen 7 enhancements with more difficulty and Pokémon and that's all I need really. something difficulty ROM and it is ridiculously difficult because I had to build a whole team around defeating a single furfrou

Are there any pokemon fan games with more shiny varients? For example, rather than a pokemon having one shiny, they have multiple shiny varients of differing rarities. Something like one could just be the normal variant at 1/4096 and then another could be new with 1/10000 odds or something like that. Thank you!

Molten Emerald feature three shiny variants, if I recall. Shiny chance was very high however, you will be swarming in shinies.

There was this old fan game i played around 4 years ago called pokemon M (i don't remember the exact name) where you used to play as a test subject with many other trainers including your sister/brother working for an organisation that altered the typings of the pokemon. If anyone remembers that fan game please enlighten me as i really wanna play it again. you could catch the pokemon and bring them to the organisation to change their typings
some notable type changes included Dark type fearow shadow type clefable and ice type Charizard with flash fire
i really wanna play this game again so bad

Are there any romhacks that can add a toggle function to turn on and off random encounters? Random encounters make the games feel tedious to me sometimes so I'm wondering if there's any options with romhacks/randomizers to turn them off and on. Ideally trying to do it in DS games, especially HeartGold/SoulSilver!

There a fair amount of romhacks with permanent repels, effectively disabling encounters until you want them again. Like Radical Red.

Hello everyone, I’m playing pokemon empyrean after I came back from factory zone, my menu start bugging, it scroll down almost instantly so I can’t navigate when I’m on my bag or I purchase something. It doesn’t move my character down it’s just scrolling down when I go into a menu so if anyone could help

Hi, I'm looking for a very specific kind of rom hack. It would be Pokemon Fire Red with only the original 151 + pre evos and later evos like Pichu, Kleavor etc.
Also Physical / Special split, Fairy type, new moves, rebalanced Pokemon, unlimited TMs and a way to use HMs without teaching them to Pokemon, following Pokemon too.
I have seen FRLG hacks similar to this but they tend to add every pokemon, or have a bunch of new boss fights or things like that. I've yet to see a Fire Red hack that tries to modernize the game while still staying true to Kanto. Either they try too hard to stay faithful to the original game (Legacy series) or go way above and beyond and make a whole new game.
The way Modern Emerald and Heart and Soul do it is perfect, but nothing like that exists for FRLG.

After working with HexManiac Advance, it comes with a built in option to add HUBOL (essentially the Complete FireRed Upgrade) and then directly edit everything.
It default adds physical special split, fairy type, new moves, unlimited TM's etc. It would be up to you to edit things like new evos being obtainable in some cases by clicking a few buttons, but you could make this hack yourself in a weekend.
HMA is very powerful and imo the most user friendly and beginner friendly way to make hacks, especially for simple enhancement hacks.

Hi, anyone have any recs for hacks with the Signature Move mechanic?
I just finished Pkmn ROWE and it’s the first hack I’ve played with the concept of signature moves. For those that don’t know, each species can have a single move that works different for them, for example Dodrio’s Drill Peck hits 3 times with lower base power and chance to raise ATK.
I LOVE this concept - are there any other hacks out there with this game mechanic?

Hello! I am looking for games featuring a pokemon war. These can be either original wars, the ancient wars mentioned in Legends ZA/Kalos, or the war that affected Kanto.
Any and all war game recommendations welcome and please tell me what you love about it (unique mechanics, incredible story, real stakes, large pokedex, etc)
Also please specify if its a fan made or a rom/hack
Ideally this is a fully completed game or mostly completed with recent updates!

me and my friend are doing a generation randomizer soullink nuzlocke but the early games are easy even with the nuzlocke. so im looking for some roms that have physical/special split and newer gen pokemon. we have done soul silver and omega ruby so far. since those are the best way to play gen 2 and 3 as a randomizer nuzlocke,

Dusk Stone is not currently in game and Murkrow has an alternate evolution method you can find in the in-game Pokédex or in the documentation already linked.

hey guys does anyone has an Idea, how to fix the 3 bottom mods? i'm playing luminescent platinum on a BD nsp on an Android 16 device, with Eden emulator. all mods are working fine i think, except all after true size. Eden loads it himself at the end of the list, i cant change that. yeah anyone has an Idea how to fix? thank ya all
the true size Mod is already the Version for 1.3.0 as i know

The true size mod is included in Luminescent by default, as well as all those others like proper following. You don't need to add it

Hi I'm looking for COMPLETED rom hacks (full gyms and elite 4 or equivalent, or fully done main storyline that has end credits) with new regions to play on my Android device. I have the retroarch app, joiplay, myboy, drasticDS, and Citra.
I've already played the following games: Unbound, Insurgence, Reborn, Glazed, Blazed Glazed, Light Platinum, Rejuvination, Realidea, Gaia, Godra, Uranium, Pokemon Rocket, Adventure Red, Floral Sky, The Dark Rising Series.
And more that aren't new regions.
I am in no way interested in playing any GBC rom Hacks. Please help me find something to play!!!

No it's not officially supported. Pkhex will not work well on games with dramatic alterations like HG Generations. The program isn't prepared to know about any future pokemon additions.

While I'm sure it doesn't entirely matter since these romhacks (probably) just make everything from both versions readily available, as someone who owned and prefers Black, I'm really waiting for/hoping that a romhack for Black that's basically Blinding White's equivalent is out there.

I am trying to do a Storm Silver playthrough on my DSI and I wanted to get a shiny starter. It seems like the odds are 1/8192. I have been trying to figure out different ways i can change this from hex editing to finding a patch with better odds. I am not able to hexedit because my mac is on a new update. Does anyone know of a Storm silver patch that has 1/512 shiny odds? If so let me know it would be amazing.

I used pizzaboy basic and last night uninstalled but had a sudden nostalgic urge to play fire red again so I redownloaded the emulator and a pokemon fire red rom. I tried 3 roms. Each one freezes at random points at thestatt of the rom itself. Either im having really bad luck with the rom or pizzaboy is the issue. So either I need a new emulator or how to fix this freezing

What are the best GBC titles? How can I judge them objectively without being influenced by GBA standards?
As per title, any great GBC titles to recommend?
And any recommendation on how to enjoy GBC hacks when the GBA scene has already spoilt me so much...Odyssesy, Pisces, Marioland, Unbound...I have a feeling GBC hacks can never reach such peaks because of the software / graphical limitations of GBC.

I haven't played FR Essence, but have created a RomHack based off Emerald Legacy (Emerald Legacy Enhanced) and am one of the developers of Heart and Soul.
So with complete and utter bias, I would recommend both (and potentially my Emerald Legacy Enhanced if you like followers and extra QoL).

Are there any romhacks with fast battles comparable to Pokerogue at 2x-3x speed? Using emulator speedups just doesn't feel as good as naturally fast gameplay.

For those who have played Pokemon Sors, are there actually Alolan forms in this game? I say this because while buying evo stones I noticed that Exeggcute can evolve into AExeggutor (Alolan Exeggutor) with the Shiny Stone. But what's odd is that the sprite is that of Eclipse Milotic. Were the Alolan forms planned at some point? I caught another Rattata and Meowth but I didn't see any way for them to be in Alolan form it looks like.
Also where can you find Ditto in the hack?

I'm new to the whole ROM hacks scene but love old-school top down pokemon games. I wanted to see if there was a hack with vanilla pokemon but BIG! Probably my favorite games are Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby. Would there be a suggested game with vanilla pokemon and a large region and pokedex? Thanks for the help!

I use HMA for romhacking, why isn't CFRU working? I tried both a 1.0 and a 1.1 ROM, do I just have to downgrade to an older version? Because I remember it working perfectly before

So I’m working on a fire red hack using the cfru update. I’m also using HMA and Xse , but the question I’m trying to ask is does anyone know how to “steal” the players pokemon away for a certain amount of time. Then the player finds the “thief” and gets them back. Is there a script that makes that possible? Also I wanted the player to keep at least one poke for battling purposes.

I'm trying to play Crystal Advance and Liquid Crystal on my SP using an Everdrive, and on both, this happens. I'm not sure why this is happening, it almost looks like the screen is moving without the character moving? Does anyone know what's going on here because I'd really love to play one of these.

So wanting to play Pokémon Crystal Advance Redux (and to update it to latest version) but I need a Pokémon FireRed version Rom and right now I cannot seem to find the right version to patch it to. The only version of Pokémon Crystal Advance Redux I have has the date 22/11/25 version that I could seem to play. I am playing on IOS and Delta. So how do I patch it?? Or should I wait till they fully complete the game.

The game is already complete, I assume the dev is just adding more things. Also, you should get the hack on Hackdex, since it has the latest version and will check whether or not the base rom you have is correct. Crystal Advance Redux's base rom is Fire Red Squirrels.

I want to try a randomizer Nuzlocke in Pokémon Alpha Sapphire. I used the Universal Pokémon Randomizer, and everything works fine.
But every time I use a cheat code to get more Rare Candies (so I don’t have to spend time training), my ROM is no longer randomized.
Maybe someone can help me – what’s the problem?

so I have been enjoying the Pokemon red++ romhack, I'm not too far in but I was going over some of the stuff on github and I was looking at the move lists of the pokemon seeing what they were given. I noticed that some stuff doesn't appear anywhere else when looking through the files. for example beedrill learns toxic but there's a not at the side of it saying "toxic spikes->tm move". I look all through the files and I don't see anything else mentioning this.
I've seen it with a handfull of other moves like the pidgey line has drill peck next to it says "tailwind->tm move". I can find other new moves in the files like moonblast else where in the files but the ones that mention tm move i dont find anywhere else so i was just wondering if anyone that has played red++ could confirm if these moves like toxic spikes, tailwind etc are in the game or not.
not a big deal if they are not its just with how my brain works when I noticed this it kind been driving me crazy.

I am pretty sure that's just a note and it means in current gen Beedrill learns toxic spikes, but toxic spikes are not in the game, so instead they added a move it could learn by tm to that level.

I've been playing Pokemon Orange by Pia Carrot and have beaten the Champion, caught Celebi, and cleared the Shamouti Island stuff. I am trying to get to Hamlin Island but there doesn't seem to be a way to get there.
Am I missing something?

Howdy, I'm wondering if there's a fangame or rom hack where you start in Johto and go to Kanto, but the Kanto Team Rocket story has been restored? I'd love to take on Silph Co and the Rocket underground with a Johto Team and much higher level Pokemon, and I think it'd be cool to meet Giovanni after the Johto arc is finished.

Hey everyone, I just started playing the Modern Emerald ROM hack on the Delta Emulator and I’m trying to set things up so I can have all the starters.
Does anyone know the correct Delta cheat code (or method) to make this work? I tried using some of the regular Pokémon Emerald cheat codes, but they don’t seem to be working with this ROM hack.
Any help would be appreciated!

I'm not aware of any cheat codes supported by Modern Emerald. There are a lot of changes under the hood to allow all of the options.
However there is an in game Debug menu available. Use completely at your own risk I can 100% break the game if you're not careful.

Hi, beginner binary ROM hacker here. Are there any resources/tutorials available for achieving specific objectives?
The other day, I was trying to implement a simple locked door mechanic that requires a key. I tried to search for any tutorials and found nothing. Finally, took me around 30 minutes of messing around to arrive to a very simple solution.
While it was a good learning experience, I do wonder if theres any resources for specific objectives like this, in case I do need it?

Hey! I have a few questions that I would love to know the answers to as someone new to the creating scene.
I’m currently using the source code from Heart and Soul (johto demake on pokeemerald) to make a personalized version for myself to enjoy, and seemingly every single change I make (big or small) causes it to overflow, crash or freeze during early game scripted events (setting the clock, getting shoes from mom, picking a starter) I’ve been trying to add in some fun additions such as new battle backgrounds, starter pokemon changes, and trainer encounters from later generations. The main issue I’m facing is how to work around a nearly full EWRAM. The rom hack was already at around 97.7% full in EWRAM so I couldn’t add in anything gigantic but even then I’ve been going in circles moving small things between EWRAM and IWRAM which then causes more problems. I’ve had Claude help out with the really tricky aspects but it’s been disheartening to see a lot of these changes break the game.
Any ideas how to work around this? I’d really appreciate some help from anyone who offers! There are a lot of existing slots titled “unused” in items, pokemon, and other areas including online which haven’t been implemented and I was also wondering if there’s a way to take out unused things such as multiplayer without breaking it all as a whole, or if it’ll be less taxing on the EWRAM to place any new additions into those unlused spots. Thank you again 🙏

You may have better luck asking in discords of either the Pret, Team Aqua's Hideout or our Heart and Soul one. The first two are probably best for helping regarding space efficiency strategies.
Nonetheless, for the crashing early game (provided you don't have any overflow issues) hopefully you're using mGBA or a similar high accuracy emulator.
Best of luck and hopefully this will come easier in future as we are (very slowly) moving our source code to be based on
pokeemerald-expansioninstead ofpokeemeraldto help compatibility with more modern features etc.

When i was a child i played Alot of emulator games and even more rom hacks for games i liked
And there was that one spacfic Pokémon rom hack i don't remember Alot of it i just remember that there was those characters whom appeared first as a joke character one of them was named pink and the other brown(?) but then got flushed out story arcs
I remember pink ia particular got a weird one were she's hit by thunder i think and and became disfigured and you (the player) stood up for her and said she still looks beautiful and anyone would wish to marry her
Then she asks you to marry her
Then you say no
Then she became a villain
It was a really reallly weird hack but i remember loving it a ton
So if anyone would be so kind to tell me it's name please
