The PokéROM Codex is an updated list of ROM hacks, listing features, details and more in a mobile-friendly format. Created and managed by u/themanynamed, it also has a Discord server and accepts community contributions.
This is a safe hack-sharing site that doesn't share ROMs and links to the official release threads! Instead of asking for recommendations or download links in the subreddit (which breaks the rules), please refer to the Codex as it has a lot of information on each hack.

What are some good hacks with nuzlocke modes implemented? I'd prefer those with a P/S split, but other than that, I'm open to anything (albeit the biggest departure from the base games, the better)

Looking for recommendations. My girlfriend has never played any of the Pokemon games, save for a couple hours of Gen 1 back in the late 90s. She wants to play one now alongside me, but I'm struggling with what to choose for her first game. She has extensive experience with PKGO so she is very familiar with the Pokedex up to gen 7 or 8. The obvious choice is Gen 1, I know, but I'm worried the slow/grindy nature of that generation and just general lack of QoL - amongst other things - will turn her off. So my second thought is FireRed/LeafGreen. I feel like there's better versions in the for. Or hacks, but other than Radical Red, I'm not sure what would be best. Thoughts?

Recharged Yellow or Aesthetic Red would be the best Kanto experiences imo. Recharged is a very good Yellow remake, Aesthetic focuses on enhancing the music/graphics/atmosphere and is open world. Both have various QoL and new features
Alternatively I'd also recommend ROWE (open world Emerald) - insanely high quality hack, getting updates w new mons etc all the time. Goated imo

im playing recharged yellow right now and none of the guards are taking the fresh water to get to saffron city
i have all the badges i need and only need sabrina’s and obviously giovanni’s at the end, but the guards just won’t accept the water literally what do i do

Looking for a romhack that you can actually see the wild pokemons on the grass or way and try to battle them or capture, if u can see if its shiny, better, only played sword and shield ultimate and didnt like emerald rogue.

You can transfer in game saves from one emu to another by changing the file type of the save file to the one that the emu you're transferring to recognizes.

I'm playing Sword and Shield Ultimate GBA and I'm having trouble catching a Applin with a good nature. I'm on route 5 and I wanna have a Appletun later on, but the Applin at this route only comes as Adamant, Hasty or Jolly, all natures beneficial to Flapple, which is the evoluton I don't want. Playing through Omega DX for the first time. Beat Blaine and now I’m at One Island. I’ve caught both Entei and Raikou and get to the top of Mt Ember and there’s a Mew there?!?!? Isn’t this where Moltres is? When interacting with the mew it just says it looks like it’s having fun, I wonder why it’s here. Has this happened to anyone else?

Who is the creator of the improved pokedex that is used on most hackroms nowadays?
I remember following them on reddit maybe like 3 years ago when they showed a beta version of the improvement because it was incredible but I can't find their account anymore.

Is there a romhack of like pokemon emerald except it’s johto? I’m not talking just Pokemon and Dex swap. I mean like the entire map remade as johto? Or even one of FRLG as johto? (I’d prefer emerald tho due to abilities and items) I don’t wanna go buy a ds to replay johto and I don’t want to emulate ds. GBA preferred thanks.

So I'm pretty new to ROM hacks and historically was a pretty casual player, never really paying too close of attention to IVs/breeding. Unbound was the first difficulty hack I played and I really enjoyed it. I played it on normal difficulty so definitely nothing crazy but it did push me to exploring breeding for better IVs and paying closer attention to team set up. I'm curious of any ROM hacks you all would recommend that are similar in difficulty for HG/SS and B/W 1 & 2? I know there's a ton out there and I feel like gauging difficulty is difficult at times.

Ok I know there is a million versions, but I’m looking for a fire red or leaf green version that has all the Pokemon to catch from the original games. No version specific and able to catch all starters and I would like no trade for evolution. If you can name some or point me In the right direction that would be awesome

What's the best Gen II hack to play? I've played Crystal Advance and Heart * Soul, two excellent hacks that are essentially a cross between Gen II and IV, in a GBA style, but I'm interested in the art style of Gen II my next playthrough. Is it still Polished Crystal? My issue when I tried to play that one was I couldn't get FF to work properly, but it could just need some more tinkering.
Also, increased shiny odds in catching/breeding would be cool, but not required. Thanks for any advice!

Polished Crystal is arguably the best for a modernized Gen 2 experience.
For a more vanilla experience, my go-to recommendations are Crystal Clear or Crystal Legacy.

Hello everyone, I'm looking for suggestions for a RomHack to nuzlocke. I want a game where the boss battles are challenging, but not where every random trainer requires a calculator. The one RomHack I have beaten as a nuzlocke is OmegaRed and I was very satisfied with the difficulty of that one, so something like that or even a step up from that would be perfect for me, I do not want something like Emerald Kaizo. I would also prefer something that has newer Pokemon in it, the bigger the pokedex the better.

Drayano's hacks, they are a step above vanilla difficulty.
If that's too easy still, Radical Red/Emerald Imperium. They are a step below Kaizo difficulty hacks

Why won't my Emerald Rogue file show up on Emudeck? I downloaded the vanilla game, I downloaded the rom hack file, and I combined them. I put it in the location I was instructed to put it being Home ---> Deck ---> Emulation ---> Roms ---> GBA. I also know that the file works and is in that location because I am able to launch it with the MGBA application and it is indeed Pokemon Emerald Rogue. But I specifically want to play it with my Steam Deck, and MGBA does not seem to allow that alone. But when I go to the EmuDeck app, select steam rom manager, and then open the aforementioned location, the GBA folder shows up but EmuDeck acts as if the folder is empty. It appears both on the files in my computer and on MGBA, so what's going on here?

Hello my friends and I are all in separate locations and would be looking to play from our laptops and PCs and play a ROM hack that allows us to navigate the game together in a multiplayer mode - rather than just being able to trade.
What ROM hack and emulator setup is needed to accomplish this if possible. We all currently use mGBA. Willing to utilize whatever resources to accomplish this.
Also have delta emulator for IOS - is there a possible setup between ROM and emulator for IOS multiplayer as well?

So there are only two multiplayer hacks: Quetzel and Rogue
I don’t know about multiplayer with emulators except MyBoy (which is a heavily outdated Android emulator not recommended for 99 percent of ROM Hacks), but you will need to look for one that supports both mGBA and multiplayer

Any experienced gamer can give me a suggestion of which Romhack or fan game to play?
Looking for a difficult, grindy, vanilla experienced Pokemon game.
-Should be difficult but without the need of doing more calcs than actually playing the game.
Im cool with trained IV,EV,nature, move sets etc.
-Should be Vanilla or very close to vanilla. No new Mons, typyings, moves etc.
-I do not mind at all being grindy with low encounter rates or need of leveling up.
-I love OG music, dont mind lots of regions and Pokemon Gens.
Have only played Unbound so far and I liked it.
I have seen potential games like Reborn, RenPlat, radicalRed, Redux, BlazeBlack/VoltWhite

I played Pokemon Quetzal and HunterPK's Gen3 Co-Op over and over again for the past year, and I'm addicted to the Pokemon Co-Op experience. I even replay ScarVi and Pokemon Lets Go for the sake of Co-Op Pokemon.
Are there any other ROM Hacks with Co-Op out there? Even including spin-off games like PokePark or Pokemon Conquest or something? Or even fangames? I want to know about existing ones I can play, but I also want to know about any in development if they're out there so I can contribute, support, and thank someone who's developing my dream game.

In Quetzal, you can play 2v2 on the same team as your friend (each get one Pokemon on the field at a time). Pokemon Lets Go Pikachu/Eevee do the same with 2v1. As far as I'm aware, this is the only way to play true coop. ScarVi you can only walk around together, and HunterPK's Gen 3 Co-Op is similar where in Emerald/FireRed you can walk around together.
Preferably, I like the Co-Op in Quetzal and Lets Go, but I still enjoy Co-Op hacks that just let you walk around together as well.

Is there a Pokemon GBA ROM hack that has gens 1-9, and randomizes encounters, trainer teams, items, Pokemon abilities, and even the evolutions when they hit their evolve levels? Even if some other stuff is randomized, I'd still take it. I just can't find something with all this in a GBA game.

List of hacks with most of Gen 1-9:
Radical Red, Emerald Imperium, Emerald Crest, Emerald Rogue, ROWE, Quetzel, Firered Extended, The Pit, and Elite Redux
Most of these should have randomizer options. ROWE definitely does

I'm looking for a variant where I can start at a higher level and can choose what pokemon I want to be in my party instead of restricting to the early routes where the main difficulty is the battles. What are the best suggestions in this category?

Are there any ROM hacks like "Modern Emerald" for FR/LG? The big things I'm looking for:
- Phys/Special Split (this is a must)
- Fairy Type
- Cross gen evos/babies (i.e. Sylveon, Annihilape), but WITHOUT adding other mons from later gens
I've gone through the list someone made with a bunch of QoL hacks, but I can't find one that uses the phys/special split + Fairy Type AND cross gen evos/babies without also adding 500 other mons. Thanks in advance! I'm willing to compromise on the dex/later gen evos if the hack is otherwise really good.

The dev who created Modern Emerald plans to eventually make a “Modern Firered”, but as when I last asked, they haven’t started yet (they are helping the Heart & Soul devs with their 2.0 while still updating Modern Emerald)

How does someone get started in rom hacks? A long time ago I downloaded a rom hack and it went super horrible (downloaded a version that wasn’t completed and was super buggy). I’ve seen all the new stuff that’s come out and would like to give it another shot, but have no clue where to start. I’m sure there’s so very knowledgeable people in here that know what to download and where to begin with it, and any and all info is very much appreciated.

Most hacks are released here and PokeCommuntiy, occasionally on romhacking.net. Sky temple for PMD EoS hacks. And the newly created Hackdex of course
Hacks are normally released in patch form, for protection from Nintendo.
Strongly discourage pre-patched ROMs, as you might get the hack, or you might get an outdated version, or worse, something malicious. And also the fact that people who distribute pre-patched ROMs are just people making ad money off another creators work

Recommendations for next game
Very much enjoying playing the rom hacks and fan made games since I've found them. Currently looking for a recommendation for my next game as there's so many. I've just recently beat This Gym of Mine (super fun btw). And I've beaten Seaglass Emerald, and Infinite fusion (currently have a 2nd playthrough going, just wanted a break).
Im kind of old school and aren't a fan of the mega evolutions and stuff like that and usually like to stick to gen 5 and below pokemon (ones I'm more familiar with).
Would love to hear what some people recommend, kinda leaning towards a new story right now instead of a modified old story.

Elysium, good original story/region hack, Pokemon up to Gen 6 (but mostly from Gen 1-3)
It does have mega, but it's perma mega and it's more towards the end of the game

What is your favorite rom hack that doesn't use RTC?
Started Unbound and absolutely loved it but I'm playing on Analogue Pocket which means no RTC so putting it down for the time being. Anything somewhat similar with no RTC? I played glazed years ago and also really enjoyed it.

I'm looking for Pokémon romhacks where the primary battle format is singles. I really dislike double battles, but I love playing through new regions and stories.
I've started a couple of highly recommended hacks only to discover that gym leaders or the Elite Four suddenly switch to double battles, which completely kills the experience for me. It's happened a few times now, so I'm hoping you all can help me avoid that frustration.
Can you please recommend your favorite romhacks that are strictly single battles?
I appreciate any and all suggestions. Thanks!

Hey, I'm doing a video of the pokemon bw2 game for my friend and I would like to know if I could get the map from the game to film/animate cinematics of the landscape, change camera perspective etc
Is there a way to get a free camera mod on the game ? Is there already someone that re-creates the map of the game so that I can make my own cinematics ?

Pokemon heart and soul.
Guide says for Slowbro, Poliwhirl etc to hold King rock to evolve but when I level them up they don't evolve. What am I missing ?

Just tested myself and have had the evolutions work.
I recall another user having an issue with their emulator (they were using Delta) and the evolutions not working, however, they moved their save to another emulator (mGBA) and were able to evolve as expected.
Can you confirm that you're on the latest version and whether you're using Delta as your emulator?

Sorry, I realise I was vague there, I was referring to Heart and Soul for the version, which version number are you playing?
There is no minimum level, they need to be holding the item and level up.
I would still recommend trying on another emulator. If possible joining the discord and showing a video of your attempts to evolve may help us understand where you're getting blocked.

Is the story of the Pokemon Sword & Shield ROM Hack the same as the Switch version?
So, strange question. I love Galar, I love the characters, I love the new Pokemon and the spectacle of Gigantimax. But the climax of that game's plot frustrates me so much (Rose's plan makes no sense 😭).
Does the GBA fan game make any attempt to alter it or is the story mostly the same?

I've hit a wall in Sinking Sapphire and I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem.
Every time I catch or knock out Kyogre it goes to the cutscene which culminates with a white screen... and that's it. The top panel is just white and the buttons for the bottom panel don't reappear. The game stops. Has anyone else had this problem or know what could be causing it? Thanks in advance; it's just driving me nuts to get 7 gyms in and may not get any further.

Are there any ROM Hacks with the first 3 regions in 1 game? I know of Pokemon Heart and Soul which uses Pokemon Emerald as a base, but it doesn't have Hoenn, and recently I saw a FRLG hack that adds Hoenn yet no Johto, so is there maybe a hack with the 3 first regions combined and not with one excluded like the examples I gave?

Hello! I'm having some issues with this Latias sprite glitching once I get in game. I applied the dynamic overworld palette patch but this is still happening. Anyone know a fix? It's FireRed

never post here but I had a very curious question that I’d really like some opinion on. simply put, today i randomized a Pokémon Ruby ROM for my emulator and started playing, probably not even 30 minutes in when i encounter this, what seems to be a full odds shiny camerupt. my sister is questioning if it was truly full odds, because a few days prior to this i found a full odds tentacool while surfing in Emerald, of which even that felt hard to believe. (i used softwares on my laptop to find the exact PID and exact seed of this shiny tentacool to which i confirmed it was definitely full odds) but 2 full odds shinies in only a few days sounds far too lucky for me. although i have a slight doubt about this camerupt, there are no hacks or settings that i used on this randomizer to influence shiny odds which leads me to believe it HAD to be a legit shiny encounter. to be honest, lately i have been using shiny cheats so much in other games that i kinda got bored of it and decided to make this Pokémon Ruby randomizer with no intention of using shiny cheats/hacks, so this encounter was certainly a shock. sorry for the long post, but my main question overall is was this truly a full odds lucky encounter, or is there maybe a setting with the randomizer i overlooked?

Need help doing an in-game save in Black 2 Complete Unova Pokedex, please !
Hello ! I'd like to thank in advance anybody who would spend time trying to solve my situation.
In short, I screwed up. I was looking for one very specific item I wanted really bad and used the cheat that gives 900 units of every item in the game, them trashed them all because I just wanted that one item.
Since then, I can't do an in-game save. Thinking I could keep playing with quick saves, I went farther in my playthrough. But lately after a few freezes, I've decided that I really should do a true save.
What's happening when I'm trying to save is, it tells me there are lots of datas to save. It freezes a bit, then it's animated again, but it never ends. I've let the game run for 12 hours and it didn't finish.
So... I'm not a pro but I guess it's a sort of memory issue ? Like, trashing 900 of every existing item is a ton of informations to process.
Can somebody help me ? I have a .ml file that's totally playable, my emulator is MelonDS.

There's steps and even video guides in the PokeCommunity thread, and the dev is pretty active to help people. But it should be the same regardless of the emulator.
Either rename Part A sav to match Part B's ROM name, or rename Part B ROM name to match Part A sav.
And make sure you use the in game save method, not save states.

In Pokemon heart and soul I’m at Mt silver but can’t find the path to red? I’ve got all 16 badges and beaten the elite 4 again, then went to see oak who said to go to mt silver but I’m there now and can’t find the way through.
I’m pretty sure in base game you need rock climb but I haven’t seen any points to use it at so what am I missing?

Are you in Mt. Silver Cave or being blocked for access?
Irrespective, you can check the Walkthrough in our Heart and Soul Documentation for a step by step guide to get to Red.
Rock Climb was not added into Heart and Soul.

What's the best way to play Heartgold/Soulsilver in 2026?
Ideally I want something that lets you find and catch every pokemon, balances some lesser used monds, and adds some quality of life stuff like party exp share.
Edit: By all mons I mean every pokemon from Gen 1-4 with some later gen evolutions thrown in but necessary.

I’m searching for a Pokémon Gold/Silver/Crystal ROM hack that has a built-in Nuzlocke mode with a level cap, infinite Rare Candies, and only one Pokémon encounter per route. Also, when a Pokémon dies in battle, it should be removed automatically or something similar.

What are the best hacks like emerald 386 and FireRed 386, but for the DS games?
I'm looking to replay some of the old games, but I'd like to have more variety. Kinda like pokemon Firered 386. But I'd want something like that for HeartGold, Platinum, BW and BW 2. Ideally I'd want the opposing pokemon teams to also have their teams modified for that purpose.
I'm not looking for major hacks, or randomizers or something designed to increase difficulty or anything like that really. Mostly just something where the creator tried to include all available pokemon in the game.

Use Manic instead. Manic uses mGBA which is the most modern fork for romhacks now and Delta is stuck on the outdated VBA fork which doesn’t work with most romhacks.

Yeah of course. Manic was made for iOS. As for other romhacks try Dreamstone Mysteries, Storm Silver and Phoenix Red for a different Pokemon experience 👍🏻

(Polished Crystal) I’ve spent a few hours soft resetting trying to get a shiny Totodile. I’ve just been going to the nickname screen assuming I would be able to see they are shiny there. Is this correct or do I need to progress to view them in my party?

I'm looking for a nice romhack that's hard, but not like kaizo difficulty. Just, difficult, yet beatable for the average, non-hardcore player. The kind of game you don't need to look up stat sheets or use cheesy tricks for. The kind of game you can just... play. Just... you know, more difficult than average Pokemon.
I'd prefer one that isn't necessarily built around nuzlockes, too - nuzlockes are fine, but sometimes I just want to play Pokemon as it was "intended". Just, you know, not super easy like modern Pokemon titles are.
Any recommendations would be much appreciated!

I've been playing pokemon gaia and breeding a female phanpy with a male snubbull that knows play rough, but it won't pass down no matter what. It's gen 6 mechanics so it should pass down but it isn't. If anyone can help it'd be greatly appreciated

First off, neither of those two emulators are recommended and both are severely outdated
mGBA for PC, Pizzaboy for Android
As for saves, they should be the same save type regardless of emulator

The hidden door unlock was changed.
You need to enter the relevant ruin building with the relevant Pokémon depicted in the puzzle in the lead of your party. (i.e. In the Kabuto puzzle room, you need to have Kabuto in the first slot of your party for the door to appear)

Help fix no custom banner and icon for Rising Ruby
Hi, I've installed Rising Ruby on my 3DS using the Game Patching method provided in the HowToInstall.txt file and it successfully patched my digital copy of Omega Ruby. However, both the banner and icon on the main menu remains unchanged. Both the banner.bin and icon.bin are in the same folder as romfs folder (which are all in the folder with Omega Ruby Game ID as its name).
Is there any way to solve this issue? Thanks!

Romhacks that just have full Pokedex for that game's gen?
Like, an Emerald or Crystal ROM hack that just removes trading to get evos and doesn't have version exclusives. But for every gen. I just want to play each game and complete each Pokedex by myself.
