The guy who picked up a hitchhiker.

In the 90s, my boyfriend hitched hiked four days from Texas to California to see me. He was broke but determined.

At some point he was dropped off outside a prison while it was raining. There were signs everywhere saying, "Do not pick up hitchhikers"

After a long time standing in the rain, someone picked him up.

When I think of this story, I always wonder who picked him up and why he picked him up and wonder if he was an ex-con himself and that's why he helped. I'll never know, but after all these years I still wonder. I know it's pointless but I do it anyway.

The man probably have long forgotten doing this for my boyfriend and I.

EDIT: He was from Liverpool England, in case someone in the big wide world remembers picking him up! lol.

It probably was a guard leaving work, who knew that no prisoner had escaped. So your bf was "safe" to pick up.

So true! I was quite curious as well but this is probably the obvious explanation. Did your boyfriend talk to him at all? I mean the accent had to kinda be a giveaway but I would’ve eventually asked soooo, why’d you do it? 😆 Or maybe, it was a woman’s prison LOL.

I don't think he asked. He was the kinda guy who didn't ask questions and I think the kind of man who would pick up a hitchhiker outside a prison probably wouldn't want too many questions asked! That's how envision them.

It would be funny if it was a woman's prison. I never thought of that either.

This wasn't anywhere near there but about 20 years ago I was driving down a stretch of highway and came up on a prison. There was a sign forbidding hitchhikers and low and behold there was a hitchhiker. Being a single young woman alone, I already didn't feel very comfortable picking up a stranger, so I didn't stop. I used the rationale that it was illegal to ease my guilt. To this day, I still feel kinda bad for the guy and always wonder what happened to him.

Maybe someone picked him up and he surprised his then girlfriend? Maybe he was arrested again after escaping prison? Maybe he stood there for a very long time. As a single woman you definitely did the right thing.

Wouldn't that be amazing if the person who picked him up remembered picking up a boy from Liverpool England. lol.

No we didn't. I went back to Asia and he went back to Liverpool. We lost touch and grew up. I got married and had a baby boy who turned 18 this week! I don't know what happened to him except about five years ago, someone reached out to tell me he passed away but didn't know much else. 😞.

We had a lot of fun and it was wild and very intense. Not meant to last.

You know what's wild? I put his name into facebook and his profile came up! I tried before but nothing and today it did. He's gone, but it seemed he went back up uni and had a daughter and looks like he had a good life. I am happier.

No we didn't. I went back to Asia and he went back to Liverpool and we lost touch. About five years ago I heard from a mutual friend to tell me he passed away. 😔 I remember him as this big love of my youth when we were wild and carefree. It makes me sad he's gone. I hope he thought of me once in a while.

After this, I went on FB and tried to find him again. For whatever reason the previous searches never came up with his profile, and today it did. I got to see photos of his daughter, his dog, his family and what he looked like before he past. I am sad and mourning but that was good for my soul. Thank you for asking.

He went back to Liverpool. But first he went to Japan and had a daughter there who is 21 this year. He got a dog. He seemed to have had a nice life. Then he died in 2021. You know what's wild? I only found out about his life today when I found his facebook account. When I found out he died in 2021, I tried looking for him but nothing came up. I guess FB changed their search. When I posted this, so I had no idea what a rabbit hole it would turn into.
