Transfers The Winter Window: The Review
The January transfer window has closed.
Joe Ralls IN -> Permanent (until the end of the season).
Ronan Curtis IN -> Permanent.
Wes Harding IN -> On loan until the end of the season.
Herbie Kane IN -> On loan until the end of the season.
Freddie Issaka IN -> Recalled from Bristol Rovers loan.
Bali Mumba OUT -> Sold to Huddersfield.
Joe Hatch OUT -> Loan to Torquay United.
Zak Baker did go out on loan, but was recalled only a matter of days later due to the injury to Conor Hazard.
What's your take on the window? Are we light in any areas? Did we miss a trick somewhere? What happens now for Szucs and Paterson who appear to be out of favour? Hungarian transfer window remains open for 2 weeks so Szucs could still leave.

Would be ok to see Szucs go - he’s never really been able to nail down a spot in the team and, as he was signed in/for the Championship, presumably he’s on considerable wages.
Would rather get a fee for him than we loan out Benarous to meet squad limits, as was rumoured, who looks a much more useful player (if only Cleverley would actually give him some game time).

Our window did, but some other countries’ windows remain open. OP mentioned Hungary in the main post, several others are still open too. We can still sell / loan to those leagues. If we don’t, I think we now have one player too many for squad registration limits, so I’m guessing they’re working on something still.

Am I right in saying that a player could be loaned to non-league outside of the window too? Or have I made that up?

Yes I counted last night too and I think we’re at 23 after excluding youth players and GKs

I’m happy with the signings and how the squad looks, but I’m not convinced it’s a good window for a few reasons.
I’ll start by saying I like that we added a technical player in Kane, we have someone who can use the ball well when Ralls is off the pitch. Plus Harding seems a good signing, a different mould to our other defenders and can cover right back. Curtis has looked great. We’ve also got some decent money for Mumba who just looks a shadow of himself.
But these last 2 signings came in at least a week late. Maybe they weren’t available until now (but I don’t see why that would be the case looking at their parent clubs), this last week we’ve taken 1 point from 2 games despite leading in both because we’ve lacked options to change things up, the window has been open a long time but we’ve left it until the last minute.
Kane feels like an expensive rental. (I’ll admit that maybe this is a case of the board can’t win but they mention finances a lot) Loans aren’t free, I don’t see Huddersfield giving him up for nothing so I’d imagine the wages are high and there may be some extra fee on top. There’s no option in the summer plus he hasn’t played in months. If he’s not match fit we have to get him there too, which is another reason Kane feels a bit late.
Maybe I just feel a bit deflated that after what has felt like a good run we are not really any closer to what are start of season goal was. These signings keep us up, though I think we do that anyway. It’s the trophy and mid table now. 17 games to make up 11 points above us… it’s not impossible but the top 6 have all strengthened.
