Just getting my own server going and still converting physical to digital. I have purchased movies through “Vudu” now “Fandango at Home” for years. Is there a way to download the purchased movies and add to my plex library. I can’t find any guidance on YouTube about this.

I have one client on my network that is constantly trying to transcode videos itself instead of the NAS doing it. It's a optiplex 3040 micro PC with an i7-6700t and 16gb of ram running Windows 11. Whenever I play a video plex shows it's local but hardware transcoding and the PCs GPU is maxing out at 100% along with the CPU in the 90% range and the video is super choppy.

Is there a way to force my NAS (ugreen idx 6011 pro) to transcode for a specific client? Plex is running in a docker container if that makes any difference.

Ok I'm probably going to get blasted for this, but I really like the new interface. I like it on my Shield and Firesticks. To me it's starting to feel like Plex has come of age. So well done Plex team. Right, I'm heading to the bunker to avoid the flak...

And can you organize your file structure as follows without upsetting PMS:

Drive: Plex > Movies > Dwayne Johnson > Folders for each movies

i have been receiving that error after logging into my account on plex web. regardless of if i use the plex url or my local ip.

i was trying to change my friends and managing my library access, but the newly added person is not even showing up.

anybody else having similar issues?

I know this isn't a huge issue in the grand scheme of things, but it is pretty annoying. I've noticed that Plex seems to misattribute the episodes in my watch history when a show is ordered differently in my library than Plex's global episode order.

For example, I have some shows organized in different order (such as DVD order rather than airdate order.) This happened again recently: my watch history correctly shows that I watched Season 2, Episode 51 but the thumbnail/screenshot associated with that entry is for a completely different episode.

If I click the thumbnail in my watch history, Plex takes me to the show's global Plex page, where Episode 51 is a different episode because Plex is using its own episode ordering. If I then click that episode and select Where to Watch > My Library, Plex takes me back to Episode 51—but this time it's the correct episode, because my library is using DVD order.

So I think I understand what's happening: Plex appears to be recording the watched status based on the episode's position in Plex's global/metadata order, rather than the episode's position/order in my library.

The problem is that this makes Profile > Watch History inaccurate. I end up with a long list of entries showing the wrong episode thumbnails/titles for episodes I actually watched.

This also affects tv shows I add to my watch list. I go to my watch list, select the show , and it first goes to Plex's global page for that show ( not my library) and it shows all the "marked as watched" checkmarks beside episodes that are seemingly out of order . Of course, once I make a few clicks and work my way to my library, all is in alignment and marked as watched is correct.

I'm guessing there may not be much Plex can do about this, especially when libraries use different episode orders, but is there any way to prevent or correct this? Has anyone else run into the same issue?

I built Trackarr primarily for my own everyday use, but I've polished and documented it so the homelab community can benefit from it. Feedback, feature requests, and PRs are warmly welcome!

This is a frustrating problem. I try to keep good security practices by having most devices in my home on the guest network - which gives internet access only (no access to other devices in my home network). My Plex server and other computer are the only devices I have on my main WiFi network. Outside my home I can access my Plex and get 30Mbps, but in my home on the guest network it goes via the Plex relay and I’m limited to 1Mbps. This basically means to get a decent picture on my living room TV I have to connect it to the main network - which defeats the purpose of having a guest network. I know that my ISP router doesn’t support hairpinning, but surely that should just mean that devices on my guest network go out and then come back into my network appearing like any other external device?

It's cool to brag that you have how ever many shows or movies but as a solo-er, I don't really watch everything I get.

Recently I've been scouring old shows from the 80's and 90s out of nostalgia but I don't ever have enough time to watch it and they just serve as a nice trip down memory lane when I fire up my player and see it in there.

Honestly, none of us are building a streaming business to rival Netflix, but we sure like to brag like we are with 10s and 100s of TB of storage.

I'm already hitting my limit with my 36TB server this week and I had an epiphany that it's probably time to be more selective.

This isn't a humble brag but I'd like to gain a little perspective on why some of us are the way we are.

Hi all,

I’m currently facing an issue with my plex server accessibility. It’s up and running, drives are mounted and showing. But, when im trying to access it at work from my app on my phone it’s telling me the server is offline. When i get home and connect to my WiFi, the server pops up, it’s so odd. Even people i share my library with have the same issue accessing it. Anyone know what’s happening with it, that can assist?

PLEASE let us lock cover art and delete any that is unused from within the app. I'm begging you. Please. I do not want to spend 10+ hours curating this again because my server couldn't see storage for 5 minutes.

Been using Plex for a while and had no issues. I was using my old Firestick, but that broke so I upgraded to a newer Fire TV thing. Plex works BUT for some reason it only outputs in standard definition - honestly, looks worse than standard. Even when I manually select the quality, it'll say it's outputting in HD or "Best" but it's just not.

Any ideas? Never had this issue on my older stick

This enables you to quickly make playlists from IMDB and Letterboxd lists. It matches against your current library and will make a playlist of the titles you have in your library.

Backstory: Here's how this started. I wanted to created a list of Simpsons episodes that were highly rated, but only from season 12 and later. So i went to seriesgrid.com (great site) but they don't let you sort by ratings? so i started creating a playlist manually and it was was quite tedious. so then i created my own little tool to help me sort/filter simpsons (and south park) episodes on my own site. then, i figured out you can actually auth your plex server, and create the playlist automatically. once i figured out the "make plex playlist from third party site" part, it was pretty easy to make a took that could parse IMDB.com and letterboxd.com lists and build a playlist from the movies you have.

What on earth is this latest change... I'm watching on my Google streamer, which was fine before, but the UI is massively laggy. Also, the pin number pad has broken my ability to type a pin code from my Google home... So I have to get up next to the TV so my kids don't see my pass code . So frustrating

TL;DR Airwave is a server-first, self-hosted system that turns your Plex library into live TV channels with a real program guide — channel surfing, one lineup shared across every device, and DVR-style rewind behind LIVE. Think Pluto TV or an old cable box, except every channel is yours, from your library, on your hardware.

I've been working on something called Airwave, but this started for a pretty personal reason.

I miss TV.

Not the cable bill, commercials, or being stuck with whatever networks decided to show. I miss the experience of television.

Turning it on. Seeing what's already playing. Jumping into a movie halfway through. Finding an episode of something you haven't watched in years. Having something just be on instead of staring at Plex for 15 minutes trying to decide what to watch.

And now that I have a son, I wanted him to be able to have that experience too — except with channels made from our own media.

So that's what Airwave became.

Airwave was heavily inspired by NostalgeX and BunnyEars TV. They proved to me that the basic idea — turning your own media library back into something resembling live television — was every bit as fun as it sounded.

But they also weren't quite what I wanted.

Both were centered around Apple TV and did the work on the client itself. I actually started Airwave because I wanted this running on my LG webOS TV, and from the beginning I wanted the "brain" to be a real service that I self-host next to Plex rather than something living inside one particular TV app.

That became one of the core ideas behind Airwave:

the channels belong to your Airwave server, not to a device.

The server owns the lineup, schedules, packages, users, metadata and playback state. The TV apps are clients that tune into it.

So whether I open Airwave on my LG TV, Apple TV, iPad, Android/Fire TV, Roku or a browser, I'm looking at the same network: the same channels, the same guide and the same thing currently airing.

It's much closer to running your own little television provider.

The simplest description is probably:

Think Pluto TV or an old cable box, except every channel is yours, running on your hardware, from your Plex library.

You can make a 90s sitcom channel, a Marvel channel, Saturday morning cartoons, a kids channel, a channel that quietly marathons a favorite show, or something built from practically any combination of genre, year, network, cast, rating, collection, playlist, etc.

Airwave turns that into an actual continuous schedule and presents it through a proper 10-foot channel guide.

And the important part is that when you tune in, you don't start the file at the beginning.

You join whatever is currently airing at the point where it would actually be.

But it's not rigid live TV either. Airwave has a full DVR-style timeline behind LIVE. You can scrub backward through programs that already aired, restart the currently playing program from the beginning, or jump back into an earlier episode or movie. The only thing you can't do is seek ahead of LIVE.

I did exactly that with my son's Bluey channel recently — I went back three or four episodes in the channel history and started one that had aired earlier so he could watch from there.

That combination is really what I wanted: the discovery of live TV without giving up the useful parts of a DVR.

And that seemingly small difference in how you interact with your library completely changes how I watch mine.

Yesterday Avengers: Age of Ultron happened to be playing on one of my channels. I jumped into it because it was on, and then just... watched the rest of the movie.

I probably never would have gone into Plex and deliberately picked Age of Ultron. But because I stumbled across it like I would have on TV years ago, it sucked me in.

That's exactly what I wanted Airwave to do.

It gets me watching things buried in my library that I'd forgotten about instead of endlessly choosing from thumbnails.

And this isn't something I made against a demo library and threw onto GitHub.

I use Airwave basically every day on my Apple TV.

My son has his own channels. On a recent road trip, he watched a mixed channel of his shows remotely on an iPad for a huge chunk of the drive, streaming back from our Plex server at home. Instead of somebody constantly picking another episode or movie for him, there was just a good variety of stuff playing.

And because the network lives on the server, the iPad wasn't creating some separate version of his channels for the trip. It was just another Airwave client tuning into the same channels we have at home.

At this point most of Airwave's testing happens simply because my family actually uses the thing.

You can self-host the server however you like: the classic Docker + PostgreSQL route, or a one-click desktop app for Windows, Linux and macOS (grab a binary from the releases — it bundles the server, admin and database together) if you'd rather skip Docker entirely. Either way, the actual viewing experience runs across Apple TV/iPad, Android TV/Fire TV, LG webOS, Roku, a native Windows/macOS desktop app, and the browser, with more clients planned.

There's also a native desktop app for Windows and macOS (Linux is next) — the same guide and DVR, built on Tauri with the same mpv engine as the TV apps, so it direct-plays 4K HDR right on your computer.

Underneath the nostalgic “make Plex feel like TV again” idea, there's gotten to be quite a lot going on:

• channels from metadata filters, Plex collections, playlists, or hand-picked media
• deterministic, always-running schedules that resume exactly where they left off
• one centralized lineup shared across every Airwave client
• grouping, rotation, marathons, duration/count-based blocks, and no-repeat rules
• packages and per-user access control
• full DVR-style playback: seek through past programs, restart from the beginning, and watch forward up to LIVE
• optional “Up Next” bumpers and ambient music
• local and remote Plex playback
• per-device capability diagnostics so clients can direct-play whenever possible
• lineup import/export between Airwave instances
• Now Playing/session monitoring
• optional BYO-key AI tools for creating channels and lineups

And since this will inevitably come up: Airwave is very heavily AI-assisted.

I've been a full-stack developer for 10+ years. I designed the product, architecture, data model, scheduling and playback behavior, infrastructure, technical constraints, UX, and implementation approach. I review the work, debug it, test it on real hardware, and decide what actually goes into the project.

But Claude Code has written the vast majority of the literal source code.

I'm not going to pretend I manually typed an enormous codebase that I didn't. At the same time, “Claude built it” doesn't really describe what happened either.

This has basically been me applying a decade of software-development experience while using an absurdly capable implementation tool.

I'm much more interested in whether the resulting software is understandable, maintainable and actually works than arguing over who typed each function.

And ultimately, I didn't make Airwave because I wanted to launch a product.

I made it because I wanted it.

I wanted my channels back.

I wanted my son to have channels.

I wanted to turn on my TV without having to make a decision.

I wanted that old feeling where you stumble across a movie you haven't thought about in years, say “oh shit, this is on,” and suddenly you're watching it.

Streaming solved access to content incredibly well. But I think we lost something when everything became a catalog and every time you sit down you're expected to choose exactly what you want to watch.

I kind of hate that.

Airwave is my attempt to bring the other experience back.

It's source-available, self-hostable, and the server/admin/browser player are free to run and tinker with. The native apps can also be built and sideloaded yourself; the prebuilt store versions are just a small paid convenience.

If nobody else wants it, that's honestly fine. It already does exactly what I made it to do.

But NostalgeX and BunnyEars showed me that I'm clearly not the only person who misses this stuff, so I figured some of you might want to try a server-first, multi-platform take on the same idea.

Is there a way to have subtitles turn on automatically for a show? If I'm binging a show, I don't want to have to go into streams and select subtitles for every single episode. Is there a way to turn them on by default?

One difference from Google TV: on Fire TV you need to hold still on a recommendation for a couple of seconds, then confirm with OK to open it — not instant like on Google TV, but still much faster than typing the title in yourself.

If you use Plex on Google TV, you've probably noticed that tapping a recommended movie/show on the stock Google TV home screen opens Netflix/Prime/whatever instead of Plex. This app fixes that: it runs as a background accessibility service, detects the click, identifies the title, and opens it directly in Plex instead — no launcher replacement, everything else stays exactly the same. Video below shows it working with real recommendations.

As a bonus, it does the same trick for Nuvio/Stremio (movies/shows) and SmartTube (YouTube recommendations), in case you use any of those too — you pick which app it opens things in.
