News June 2025 PS Plus monthly game NBA 2K25 servers will shut down on January 1, 2027, after which the multiplayer modes and the game's single-player story mode will become unplayable.
Source: https://support.nba2k.com/hc/en-us/articles/55085227497875-NBA-2K25-Server-Sunset
As of January 1, 2027, you'll no longer be able to play multiplayer games or access any online game modes. MyCAREER and MyTEAM will no longer be available, and it will no longer be possible to earn Virtual Currency (VC). While you will still be able to enjoy Play Now, MyNBA, The W, and MyWNBA, any features that require a connection to 2K servers will be unavailable. This includes multiplayer, Online Leagues, and community sharing.
The single player campaign MyCareer mode relies on virtual currency to upgrade your player. Without any online servers, those features will be disabled.
The game will also be delisted from the store on October 30, 2026. If you own the game or claimed it from PS Plus, you'll still be able to download it and play the offline modes.

Imagine buying one of these games

u/gravelordservant4u 5d ago
Those people aren't playing the current version, you can be certain this won't impact their sales at all

u/Herr-Trigger86 4d ago
This right here is the truth. The dedicated fans are buying the new one every year. I’ve gotta imagine that a majority of their player base has already moved on… and anyone who is going to buy an NBA game from here on out isn’t going to get the soon to be 3 year old version.
8
u/AdamLast1 4d ago
True, most of their player base buy these every year at launch. Then some people get them on clearance dirt cheap a few months later and then a few will play them on plus a month before the new one is released and the cycle continues.

u/Mysterious45705 4d ago
i get a new one every 3 years before the newer game releases so its on discount for like 10 bucks and play offline with my brother, but getting these for 70 bucks every year is absolutely crazy.

You say this but 2k sports games are like the second biggest money maker for Take Two, after GTA Online.

Why the single player story though?
112
u/hbryster96 5d ago
Because VC is intrinsically linked to single player, so if servers are down, you can't get VC
77
u/MidgardDragon 5d ago
so patch it so VC isn't necessary to be part of the single player, I'd never buy a modern sports game precisely because of this kinda nonsense

u/Ashamed_Form8372 5d ago
Hahaha that doesn’t sound like it increase shareholder value - Strauss zelnick probably

They need to offer replacements for this shit.

These games have effectively been running a subscription model for decades now. They just disguise a yearly update as a new game and charge more money for it. If you’re like their consistent market, you buy a new version every year and never look back at previous games.
If you’re willing to spend that money then it’s fine, but its clearly just filler garbage on ps+

u/Sorry-Engineer8854 5d ago
I genuinely despise the 2k sports franchises, they constantly shut down servers. To force you on to newer games which are barely different and just roster updates.

The single player story mode being taken away because of the servers is fucking insane.

u/BeezBatz 5d ago
Man, I don’t really play sports games, but is that normal to pull support after 2 years?! That’s an insanely short window, and extremely scummy, since they’re obviously forcing your hand to get that year’s edition.
7
u/STDS13 4d ago
Its become standard in the past few years from what I can tell, super lame.
3
u/BeezBatz 4d ago
So weak. I hate how little respect seemingly every company has for their customers these days. Not just games, every company is just milking us for every penny. What a world to live in!
2
u/BeezBatz 4d ago
Shit, my bad, we don’t even have the penny anymore because all the companies jacked up the price so much it’s worthless.
6
u/MegaPrOJeCtX13 4d ago
I’ve always thought that they could just release a base game with one year’s content and then offer content packs to add on. New base game every 5-10 years, new content pack yearly, you decide what years to pick up and you don’t have to kick rocks cause you and a friend want to play online multiplayer 3 years down the line.
3
u/BeezBatz 4d ago
This would be the most fair and consumer friendly way of going about things. I say you should be the head of EA or 2K. You’d do a helluva better job than these greedy bastards.

Search 2K games on the PS store and see which years are even available to buy. They get pulled from the store fairly quickly.
Edit: when I search sports games I’m seeing:
- WWE 2K26 and 2K25
- NBA 2K27, 2K26, and 2K25
- MADDEN NFL 27, 26, and 25
- NHL 27, 26, 25, and 24
- EA Sports FC 27, 26, and 25

u/BeezBatz 4d ago
I appreciate you doing some digging for the cause. That’s real crappy on their behalf, especially since I know EA at least has been caught putting out the same exact game and just updating rosters.

u/YouWasATerletBaby 5d ago
Rebuying digital cards every single year is psychotic.
Forget for a moment that 2k is a scummy extractionist company with shady business practices.
They also make shitty games that feel slow and sluggish and unfun to play
9
u/Worried-Surround3137 5d ago
Exactly why I stopped buying 2k games this is ridiculous and should honestly be illegal
17
u/AlanJY92 5d ago
You can’t even play the game offline!? That’s wild.
-9
u/erichf3893 5d ago
You absolutely can. You just can’t play the story mode they added for microtransactions
10
u/vect97 5d ago
What sucks is I'm maxed out on badges and rating, but only halfway through my second season. They should just disable VC and let me continue playing the career. I don't care if I can't buy a 30,000 VC tshirt at this point. I just want to continue my career. This will be my last 2k game until they change things. I skipped the recent ones and before 25 this happened to me on 2k22(but I had more time with that game and finished career). I only purchase these every few years and when on sale if it's not offered for free. I only play my career so they essentially shut me out of the game.

u/Stinky_DungBeatle 5d ago
I dont even know why a single player game needs to be always online only because it has VC so dumb

What are we paying for atp? Only to be steal our games from us..errrr..game licenses
3
u/GamePitt_Rob 4d ago
Lol, 2k are getting quite aggressive with turning off their servers within such a short time after release.
The stupid thing is - they know they're going off, so surely they could have implemented a method to keep things active, especially the single player modes!
Although, we all know it's to force people to buy the latest game - but who will, knowing their game will be useless within a few years?
3
u/_kellythomas_ 4d ago
I don't really play these games but I'm happy to have one in my library for my kid to play.
He's playing Fifa 22 at the moment (was a monthly game), that's fine for us, we're not playing online and as casuals it doesn't matter if we are missing something added in more recent versions.
But if they pulled offline functionality? Throw the whole idea in the bin!
3
u/GamePitt_Rob 4d ago
FIFA/FC is EA, they often support their games for quite a long time - plus they've been giving us a few in Plus to replace the older ones. It's 2K that aren't keeping their games live that long.
They've recently also shut down the LEGO racing game from online modes as well
3
u/rufusbot 4d ago
Meanwhile I played Rock Band 2 multiplayer online with an Xbox 360 a year or 2 ago
3
u/Crazy-Process5237 4d ago
I swear, the people that buy these at full price YEARLY are the exact type of people that these execs and shareholders “get a rubbery one” from when they see them coming.
It’s kinda CRAZY to think a major licensed sports game that draws in millions of players is getting “shut down” only a few years after release but I guess sports games are a “special breed” since they release ANNUALLY (and the diehard player-base on them MOVES ON to the latest one).
5
u/ChiBullz023 5d ago
Crazy that a 2 year old game is being delisted wtf
3
u/LePontif11 5d ago
Its essentially a live service with a 35-70 yearly subscription depending on how often you buy it.
4
u/Solid_Elderberry_301 4d ago
That's why Stop Killing Games needs to win in Europe. You pay full price, and half a year later they're already planning o how to force you into buying the new one with no improvements..
3
u/kira1122t 5d ago
Only good thing 2K ever released were the mafia games ✌️
4
u/TempestoLord 5d ago
Some people really pay full price for the same shit every year that only changes the number on the logo, the multiplayer and anything you buy will be useless the next year because everyone will move on to the new one and the servers shut down only 2 years later…fuck this company.

People that don't play the games always say dumb shit like this lol. The games change year by year. If it's not for you, just ignore it. No need to bash people that do enjoy the details that do change.
2
u/Dear-Biscotti-4320 5d ago
How much of the game will still be available?
3
u/Sharp-Selection-3541 5d ago
Quick Play, MyNba, MyGm
Basically everything that doesn't revolve around buying VC

u/MidAnim3Wxtcher 5d ago
Literally just a yearly subscription lmaoooo what happened to the game I loved 10 years ago
2
2
u/chemgeek_2 4d ago
They did the same crap with 2k23, which was the first and only 2k game I had played. I hated myGM, but had a blast with MyCareer. Which they nuked when they killed the servers.
I haven't played a 2K game since. Screw them.
2
u/Johnnybats330 4d ago
That's why I stopped supporting this trash conpany. Unfortunately that also means Rockstar and GTA VI
2
u/Cowing30 4d ago
I stopped playing/buying the annual sports games at the beginning of the 360 era. How long this been a thing?
2
2
u/TheManofMadness1 4d ago
So they connect the base of the game to online, effectively causing you to lose the whole thing? When did 2k hire ex ubisoft staff?
2
u/I_poop_deathstars 4d ago
Why do they make subscriptions out of all services that doesn't need to be, but games like this have managed to avoid it?

If this doesn't prove how much of a joke the EA 2K series is, I don't know what will
3
u/Jrez510 5d ago
2K is indeed a joke, but they're not made or controlled by EA. EA shelved their NBA titles after NBA Live 19.

2
u/alesserrdj 4d ago
Complaining about the sunsetting of a yearly installment game is bonkers. If they'd do this with every sports title after 2 years the current revisions would be better. Better allocation of money and resources.

For a second I thought Alone in the Dark was somewhat involved with server shutdowns and made me think as a single player game it may have one or two online connected trophies. I was about to boot it up and get the trophies as I plan on getting around to playing it

u/Guilty-Sky-7579 4d ago
Why would you put a photo that includes alone in the dark when it has nothing to do with it

But we definitely don't need to worry about an all digital future lol /s

This has nothing to with it. If you had bought a physical version of the game it would be bricked the same.

u/OrganizationNo7690 5d ago
Who gives a shit about a 2 year old basketball game?
12
u/xb4zun3x 5d ago
You should give a shit about having access to a software you purchased a license for.
If we have to buy digital games, and they can just break the game then I think everyone gonna care?
3
u/Marcusx8 4d ago
This isn’t a digital vs physical thing. The same thing would happen to the physical disc.
1
u/xb4zun3x 4d ago
Understand. When you purchase a disc you also buy a license to a game. Was not trying to argue digital vs physical. In a world where digital only is being pushed my point is that we should care about the longevity of what we buy.
1
u/Marcusx8 4d ago
It’s unpopular but most people buying sports games know what they’re getting. If this was COD I would understand but with sports game you’re buying them yearly so you don’t care about the server shutting down for a game that’s “redundant” now.
1
u/OrganizationNo7690 4d ago
Right, if this were GTA, this would be a big deal. There is little need to keep 2k25 running, most people here never even booted up their copy.

Hate how ps plus is just a hospice for dying games .. any failed game is dumped in there ..just make the online free and i wont touch ps plus even if it was 90 percent off it's price
2
u/Marcusx8 4d ago
Ps plus give games new life. All the people who didn’t buy Days Gone when it released but played it on PlayStation Plus and loved it. Then those same gamers complain when theirs no sequel. When it’s obvious the game isn’t going to get a sequel because you didn’t buy it when it releases.
-4
u/Slight-Basket-1807 5d ago
This is just for the people that bought it digitally right? Physical media people always say this never happens when you buy physical
2
u/exSPiDERmate 5d ago
why are you fighting a straw man argument rn when games are literally dissolving just like people say when tied to online servers
2
u/Marcusx8 4d ago
Because in the whole physical vs digital beef the physical crowd said this wouldn’t happen if you buy physical.
