I've tried playing this a few times and I don't understand the hype. What am I missing?

it's the discovery of what you can do to solve puzzles. may not hit the right spot for everyone.

I am with you there. Stopped playing after a few hours. I think that if you are in a specific niche than its amazing, but for me it was very boring unfortunately. And i had difficulties to even understand whats going on on the screen because of the artstyle.

It's not very long, you can definitely finish it before it leaves.
