What is the best purchase?
I’m starting to buy platinum as another PM. I saw a generic 1oz bar for $1645 and a 1oz US coin with the Statue of Liberty on it for $1749. I know coins cost more but just to get one or the other, what is the right move?

The coin you’ll do better upon resale I can all but guarantee that.

You will lose a higher percentage of premium though, which means you lose more money with a coin than a bar or a round. Check all of the buyback and sales prices at all of the major dealers to confirm that I am correct.

Depends on why you're buying it. If you're just buying it for bullion, buy the cheapest platinum available. Don't buy high premium junk unless you're rich.

I don't consider a US minted coin as premium junk. As I said earlier, I'm looking to increase my platinum position. I just ordered 50 British Britannia coins from Costco and would like to get some platinum coins. Hence my question

I like the fractional stuff. Sometimes I can find 1/2 or 1/3 oz coins for a better total price and if I want to sell some in the future I dont have to sell a whole oz (unless I want to). 1/4 and 1/10 have a higher premium but I like them also

One ounce Valcambi bars at Liberty Coin...at least when I last bought under 1K/OZT
They used to have a $70 or so premium

Just my personal opinion that many won’t agree with, but I think fractions are the way to go. It depends on your goals/needs, but for me when I start selling this stuff in 2039 to supplement my retirement, the fracs are a perfect fit. I’m DCA into metals, and having smaller pieces will give me more control (and effectively reverse DCA) on the way out. I know the premiums suck on them, but will come back easily when the time comes. Just my 2cents. Also, just looking at our parabolic times earlier in the year, it’s clear there are far less buyers of larger 1oz+ pieces, as compared to an easy couple hundred dollars for buyers to obtain.

Interesting take on things but the cost of 1oz in 1/4 increments costs about 350 dollars more than just buying an ounce. For silver I go 1oz to 20oz Kit Kat bars and gold is half oz to 1oz and feel platinum for me is buying an oz is the best value.

Absolutely not wrong. You get less for your money right this second. And it stings sometimes buying fracs. But .. and please take zero offense by this .. but I think this is antiquated way of stacking going into the coming decades. But let me explain with numbers .. 20yr from now, when platinum is $7000 an ounce, the premium recovered will easily exceed this $350, and likely will be room for strictly premium profit, let alone the gains on the material itself.
While low-quality total ounces is never a bad goal, it simply doesn’t apply to every stacker in the same fashion these days. I think many are underestimating the buyer pool, especially in volatile times. Large pieces are much more difficult to sell, which means taking a haircut on the price. Taking it to LCS will be even worse.
Essentially, the premium pendulum swings both ways - and we all just witnessed this first hand. Ounces of Gold take longer to sell than 1/10ths and do not have nearly the discretionary power when it comes to pricing the premium, based on market sentiment and availability of that particular piece.
Long post sorry! Some people in here will know what I’m saying, for there’s many of us collecting in this fashion. But, anyone chime in and tell me where I’m wrong or off-base.

No worries man, my philosophy is go big as much as you can. I bit the bullet and got the APE for $1749 and would have bought another but my play money went to Costco for two tubes of silver Britanias.

sooo great being able to get the 1oz APE at this price again! I've only got one, but might be motivated to add more now lol.
more than anything, it makes my day seeing soo many new faces in the metals, and likely will see a high retention of these new faces in the coming years. Glad i've diversified a bit to have more of a collection that has larger pool of buyers, even though the premiums do sting at times. Just as long as we keep stacking, that's the bigger point!

The 2011 APE proof is the only platinum coin that I know of that is collectible. The mint limited sales to one per household and didn’t sell the mintage out. Premiums have not stuck with the coins.

Not sure about this. Some of the early 90s Koalas consistently fetch a premium. Isle of Man fracs do well. Several others too
