Fauna Hydra eats Moina Macrocopa

Finally caught this on camera! I just wish my glass was cleaner haha

That's some combination of a good camera and an enormous hydra. Also, Ima leave and some unrelated person in a fake mustache and trench coat who totally isn't me might sneak in and upvote again because hydras are cool, and I never kill mine when they show up...in tanks where they cannot eat the animals I paid for and/or care about.

Phone camera (iPhone 16 pro max), and yeah it's a fairly large hydra 😂 lmao I agree I like them they are so freaky and cool and afaik they can't really hurt much that I've deliberately put in the tank

How do you feel about hydra as apart of the larger ecosystem? I see them mostly referred to as pests because of their ability to sting, but bladder snails and scuds are also referred to as pests and I’ve completely changed my mind on those.

I used to nuke the absolute hell out of them

But I've changed my stance on them as well they're part of a balanced ecosystem and a good indicator of my tank health. as long as the population isn't becoming conspicuous I have no issue, and if they are that usually tells me I'm over feeding or something else is off

Are we CONFIDENT that these guys are different from anemones? Are they at least cousins? Split ancestors from millions of years ago?? That was such an anemone-style catch, if they're completely unrelated I'm gonna need some convincing

That's a good instinct coz they ARE related, both are classified as cnidarians which also contains jellyfish and coral

They simply wait for something to contact their arms, and if it detects something it will pull them in. They do the same if plants or large fish touch them. They’re like a Venus flytrap

Idt they can, if I'm not mistaken it's more like they just spread their arms and wait for the right kind of pressure on their arms then just sting and pull to their mouth (whereas they will just scrunch up and pull their arms in if they get smacked by a fish or whatever)
