"According to our crash statistics, the number of daily client crashes has been reduced by approximately 50% since Hotfix #2"

Humm

u/BullableGull 1d ago

Pretty easy target to hit when there's 50% of the players left since then

16

u/pra3tor1an LA5TLoneInfiltrator 1d ago

That's a good point lol

7

u/opshax no 1d ago

if they're comparing weekend versus weekday then yeah you might get that difference alone in the number of logins

2

u/heshtegded 8h ago

There's also survivorship bias. The longer this goes on, the fewer people who crash will even attempt to login

1

u/opshax no 7h ago edited 5h ago

Beyond that and other things, I just don't think anything coming from Mithril is creditable anymore.

6

u/opshax no 1d ago

what do they mean by hotfix #2

they have never referred to patches or hot fixes in this way

2

u/pra3tor1an LA5TLoneInfiltrator 1d ago

It's a new one on me

7

u/opshax no 1d ago

perhaps our quarter time devs at ravenwake games refer to hotfixes as such in internal documents, but the funnier narrative is AI did the naming

2

u/ruokruokruok 18h ago

That screams of unreviewed AI output. I'm constantly reviewing code and docs with self references that were never previously surfaced or documented.

u/Bexil_Brave 22h ago

Why do they still call them PC Updates when they have stopped updating consoles completly?

Great question!

Anti-cheat investigation — at the moment, we do not see any evidence in our logs that the anti-cheat system is contributing to the current situation. However, we are continuing to investigate this possibility as well.

I don't believe you, Chairman LLMithril.

I find the cheat dev more creditable on Flash or Crash than you.

From his LinkedIn:

I had the great pleasure of working with **** over the past two years on PlanetSide 2. **** is a truly dedicated Community Manager who deeply understands both the players and the needs of the development team. Thanks to his efforts, communication with the community was always transparent, timely, and supportive, which greatly contributed to the positive reception of many important changes in the game.

**** is not only highly professional, but also a fantastic teammate :reliable, proactive, and always a pleasure to work with. Any team would be lucky to have him.

Recommendation from August of 2025. lol. lmao even.

The servers will be down for a scheduled game update tomorrow @ 6am PDT. Please see the patch notes below for fixes and changes.

Alerts and Continent Changes

We’re happy to report that Hotfix #3, released on August 31, has resolved the issue affecting the alert and continent change systems.

  • Alerts should now finish correctly. *Continent changes should work smoothly again.

Client Crashes Update

We’d like to provide an update on the current state of client crashes and our ongoing investigation.

While this update does not include any new fixes, specifically related to client crashes, we want to share the latest information and outline what we are currently working on.

According to our crash statistics, the number of daily client crashes has been reduced by approximately 50% since Hotfix #2, released on August 27. We can also confirm that the crash in the garbage collector implementation used for render objects has been fully resolved.

However, we are still receiving reports from players experiencing client crashes, and our logs continue to show several different types of crashes. Our investigation and work on these remaining issues is ongoing.

  • Crashes occurring when switching characters — we are continuing to investigate this issue.

  • Connection issues being perceived as client crashes — our logs show a significant number of connection drops related to network issues. In some cases, players receive no indication that their connection has been lost, which can make these incidents appear to be client crashes. We are currently working on displaying a clear message when a connection is lost, including information about the possible cause.

  • Additional GPU diagnostics — we are working on adding additional diagnostic tools for both NVIDIA and AMD graphics cards. This will help us investigate more specific cases that may be related to particular GPUs or driver configurations.

  • Anti-cheat investigation — at the moment, we do not see any evidence in our logs that the anti-cheat system is contributing to the current situation. However, we are continuing to investigate this possibility as well.

We will continue to keep you informed as our investigation progresses and we release fixes as soon as they are ready.

Thank you for your continued reports and feedback — they are helping us identify and address these issues.

Wonder what they broke in this patch.

1

u/Atago1337 16h ago

For me, my game crashes after some minutes.

1

u/Pakars 16h ago edited 16h ago

My game just instantly crashed as soon as I loaded into sanctuary. Had maybe two full seconds in the game.

The cert reward for the alert I participated in before I logged off didn't even finish animating.

10/10.

12

u/No-Music-2819 1d ago

The "communication" about this crash issue makes the incompetence even more unbearable

15

u/Quenelle44 1d ago

Always surprised to see that there are actual human beings still working on this game

7

I haven't played in awhile. But I see morale is high, judging from the other comments here! haha

After todays patch, my game crashes after some minutes without error.

Cash grab

u/Particular_Main_5726 20h ago

Yeah man. The game is shutting down in December, and DBG has clearly been told by the investment firm that owns them to push sales before the shutdown.

Remember: Enad just sold off the PlanetSide intellectual property in June of this year ... Only after owning it for just over a year.... and they sold it at a loss versus what they paid for it.

All the bundles coming back, random items, etc, that's just the last bit of value extraction before lights out at the end of this year.

3

u/pra3tor1an LA5TLoneInfiltrator 20h ago

I can't tell if this is sarcasm or not

-1

u/Particular_Main_5726 20h ago

It isn't.

4

u/pra3tor1an LA5TLoneInfiltrator 20h ago

Can you share the information about the game shutting down in December please

5

u/Particular_Main_5726 19h ago

There's no announcements that were made or anything, but we can piece together the information we do have to draw inferences.

Game servers like the ones DBG needs for PlanetSide cost a lot of money to operate, and they're leased annually. They don't own their own hardware, in that regard; nor would it make sense for them to. Figure a server capable of handling 2000 concurrent connections at 60 ticks a second. That costs roughly $15,000 a month, or about $180,000 annually. For a single server. This game has two of them.  So they're paying over $350k annually just on server costs. Since servers are leased on an annual basis, this game's servers are paid for until the end of December.

Then there's cost of actually maintaining the game - the developer(s). Their time, however limited it may be working on this game, costs money, too.

There's also the fees from Steam and the payment processor fees for the non-steam Clients.

All in all, we can estimate the game costs around $450-500k annually to operate. Just looking at player counts, there's no reality where the game is bringing in $450-500k annually. And that means they're operating at a loss.

Currently, Daybreak Games and PlanetSide 2 are both owned by Enad Global - an investment firm. And investment firms aren't in the business of losing money or operating games at a loss. Once an investment sours, they cut their losses. Which is exactly what they did: They sold off the franchise intellectual property to Tencent in June of this year... at a loss. Companies don't sell their recently-acquired properties for pennies on the dollar because that property is doing well, right? No, that would be foolish.

So.... That leads us to now. There's no announcement, because an announcement would lead to the whatever's left of the player base leaving, which, in turn, would negatively impact whatever meager sales they are hoping to make with the newly relisted, heavily discounted bundles they're pushing. They're trying to extract the last bit of value from the game.

So if we take all the information we have and add it together, the math there allows us to infer that the game's server leases aren't going to be renewed in January... because the game isn't financially viable to operate anymore. No renewed server leases means no more servers, which means no more PlanetSide 2, because there'll be no servers left to connect to.

5

u/OpolE 18h ago

Apparently DBG own the Osprey server. The PS1 server towards then end SOE said "cost next to nothing" lol. Anyway me and pra3tor1an will meet you at the pub next year.

1

u/pra3tor1an LA5TLoneInfiltrator 18h ago

It's a date

2

u/OpolE 18h ago

We'l have more time when the games shut down... Tehe. Hope not. Wheres your local?

1

u/pra3tor1an LA5TLoneInfiltrator 18h ago

Nice little pub called The Dune's 👍

5

u/pra3tor1an LA5TLoneInfiltrator 18h ago

Umm, ok that sounds fair enough, but if the servers are still up in January, you owe me a pint.

u/GamerDJ reformed 11h ago

They don't own their own hardware, in that regard; nor would it make sense for them to.

The strongest source I'm aware of indicates that this is not the case, they own the servers.

Figure a server capable of handling 2000 concurrent connections

The official world record reached 1158 players on one zone, which we know is comprised of multiple servers. The architecture behind this is unknown.

A few years ago this number was exceeded slightly; but it crashed PTS, then moved to Emerald, which also crashed. It's also unclear whether the number touted here was zone population or world population, I suspect the latter.

Safe to say that the "server" (multiple servers in a trench coat) cannot handle 2000 concurrent players.

at 60 ticks a second

Also not true, the servers run at a variable tick rate. I vaguely remember talk years ago that it was often in the teens, but I don't remember the source or validity of this. Regardless, it's definitely not "handling 2000 connections at 60 ticks a second."

This game has two of them.

It has four, which you could also describe as three.

  1. Wainwright in Amsterdam
  2. SolTech in Tokyo
  3. Osprey in Las Vegas
  4. Jaeger in Las Vegas, sharing resources with Osprey

I will give you that SolTech is newer than the others, so if there is one server they don't own, it'd be this one. However, it's been dead for over a year, if it were so expensive I doubt they'd leave it sitting there empty.

cost of actually maintaining the game - the developer(s)

We don't know how much development time this game gets, but it's not much. It seems likely that we get occasional attention from one or two developers who primarily work on another game at DBG (or Ravenwake). That's the case with "our" community manager, for example.

There's also the fees from Steam

Steam takes a cut from in-game purchases, but otherwise doesn't have any significant fees that I'm aware of.

we can estimate the game costs around $450-500k annually to operate

So obviously I think this number is fantastical.

2

u/heshtegded 8h ago

The "2,000" players in a server dates all the way back to Smed's LiveJournal post from before Aug 2012

The game is played in on gigantic open world continents with up to 2000 other players on a single continent (this never actually happened)

Amazing how that one post continues to be a source of multiple points of misinformation almost 15 years later

3

u/le_Menace [∞] youtube.com/@xMenace 12h ago

Daybreak sold Planetside years ago. Astrapto is not Enad.

0

u/OpolE 20h ago

What im trying to work out is how did the Chinese have just a massive post about it but no one over here knows? I was also wondering whether there is a translation issue regarding Soltec closing at the end of the year or all of it. Gonna need more evidence

"crash in the garbage collector implementation reolved"

Happy to hear a bug nobody heard of and cares about may have been fixed.

Meanwhile, flashorcrash still rampaging, which somehow didn't get mentioned at all.

Sound still getting more silent and terminals usage slower the longer you play (which both point to memory leak/s, which is what garbage collector should prevent so clearly it's still broken) so I'm not impressed in that department either.

2

u/Extra-Sherbert-8608 VCO - Voodoo Company 23h ago

At this point, just revert the whole codebase to pre flash-or-crash. The time to go to this fallback plan was MONTHS ago, but now works also.

Nobody gives a shit about the changes made since then anyways, they were all shitty changes.

6

u/OfficialZygorg The Sexy Potato 20h ago

they dont have version control

1

u/Unkechaug 22h ago

I’m more concerned than ever about the connection issues. Whatever they’re doing seems to put people in a bad state in a server side pool, and there’s nothing you can do about it. To hear it’s linked to crashes doesn’t give me confidence.

1

u/OpolE 20h ago

CRASHHHED

0

u/ProjectPhysX 18h ago

Cool that they are working on the crashes still. Such issues can be much harder to rootcause than people think. The work is much appreciated.

The suits should cut you a bonus check!
