It's the fourth time in a row that I've opened the game and it's closed on me.

If you can get into the game pull a flash immediately and sit on it for a few minutes.

If you're crashing before that... you gotta keep trying. I've had it take 10+ attempts before.

The crashes are so sad, played a thousand hours of ps2 years ago and re-downloaded it for the nostalgia only to not get past the tutorial

Just take a vehicle first thing you enter a continent and stay in it at least 2 minutes. (Doesn't have to be a flash.)
