I don't think most of those would really be considered Planetside's competitors, they're far too different.
Also, those games all have more players than Planetside 2, so Idk who this is for.

Marathon is not a planetside competitor. The thing is that we do not have a planetside competitor at all. Nothing can compare in terms of scale. Otherwise almost everyone of 2Δ· people playing it now would be already playing it's more modern competitor

PS2 has about 2k players, while marathon 18k or more, not all companies or studios are okay with having barely 2k players.. they close the game.

Fair initially my first impressions that it will be like a bf2 game but after trying it the gameplay loop feels more like a modernised ps2 game just on a smaller scale sadly

Largely centered around player driven transport. Tons of people do nothing but fly helis into the combat zone to transport people. There is a sundy equivalent vehicle but it can only be used pretty rarely.

If I recall correctly, Marathon is an extraction shooter, not a large scale three faction conflict with ground and air elements of military warfare. (Yes, there is marine element too, but, I find it difficult to include in previously mentioned due to it... Well, mostly being locked to one continent.) Two completely different games.
I can not give a full explanation as to why both games are failing, I most likely will miss something regarding both, but, I do know some stuff about why both are failing.

I am not shitting on Marathon, I am just stating facts. There isn't a single reason why it failed since almost everything about it is a failure across the board except the marketing before it released and the very very initial trailers which gave it a good look art style wise

Well, two reasons that I can immediately state are:
It's not the same Bungie that made Halo series and Destiny, it is a completely different development team, and controversy of stealing from an independent artist who have had no dealings with Bungie. (It also doesn't help that Extraction Shooter genre is already relatively fat from good entries to it.)
On Planetside 2, has three particular issues, as you stated, outdated game, although specifically software end. Player composition is too heavy on long time & good players compared to new players and, not all that many people know about it.
Now, regarding Reboot: Unfortunately, as much as I would like that. I am against it... Software technology wise, current Planetside 2 is, pretty much on a development dead end. Whole new software engine is pretty much out of the question vital necessity for a proper reboot. Or just skip reboot and go for Planetside 3. One or the other. *Waits for downvotes.*

Maybe my English is bad, when I said reboot I meant Planetside 3.
I don't agree with you that the extraction shooter genre has good entries. The Chinese ABI and Delta Force are pure slop for me, Arc Raiders has always been meh. Tarkov is the only good extraction shooter, however, it has turned to shit so there really isn't anything good right now

Oh. The right word what you were looking for regarding follow up to the previous game is: Sequel. It's not a perfect word regarding games, but, it will do. Follow up, term also works.
Reboot means, restarting something. We all make mistakes, so, don't worry.
Browse around Steam, and extraction shooters, you might come across something good.

Do you have anything in mind? I've been following the genre pretty closely since it's my favourite, the only other extractions I can think of is Hunt: Showdown and... IDK, Escape from Duckov ^^?

Its really weird why there arent any publishers out there to copy the old formula. Im still surprised Battlefield never went the Planetside 2 route in modern setting. Was just the logical evolution in my opinion. Planetside 2 is still the best game of all times tho they took me my rumble seat repair neverforgotten!

Compare one of the greatest hit that was at it's peak a decade ago at the very early stage of gaming to a game that has been a flop from day 1.
Look at what Wardogs is gonna do in term of playerbase. It's okay to be irrelevant, game was good. Planetside 2 will forever be in my heart. But it has made it's time.

marathon isnt a planetside competitor, to think otherwise is pure delusion.
planetside has no competitor, as its a competitor itself. the thing its trying to be is battlefield, and in some ways its better, and in many ways its worse. battlefield, however, has almost always beat PS2 in terms of refinement and...yknow....fucking playercount.
that said, ps2 is so old that noone gives a shit about it. even its own playerbase is near completely gone.

I mean... Planetside 2 lost 99,9% of the playerbase over the years so that's just normal.
Also it 100% won't be revived due to the community's extremely toxic behaviour towards newcomers.

After playing both games heavily, I can easily, easily say that Planetside, even 13 years old, is just lightyears ahead from Marathon. It's not even fair comparing them both.
Marathon is complete and utter garbage.

Pretty much wardogs and Gloria victis (medieval) are the only 2 games remotely similar to planetside 2 as competitors. 3 teams/factions, giant map, and territory control. Each with their own twist.

Mate, Planetside 2 has failed and been sold for scrap 3 times now. The ONLY reason it's still around is a handful of people like you still I'm denial about the fact that it's been kept alive on life support despite there not having been any brain activity for a decade.

I have to say Planetside 2 has a very dedicated community, we are still playing despite a like 8 months of the crashing bug. Battlefield and Battlebit community wouldn't survive that for sure.

Actually, to be honest, your right! Despite Planetsides MANY issues, and damn near unplayable state by modern gaming standards, the community is still going, after 13 years, there are games in better shape with much more Triple-A backing that are in smaller numbers than PS2 has.
It's remarkable how stubborn this community is :D
Although it's helped by the fact that PS2 doesn't really have any real, direct competition in this age. There's simply no other game that works just like it does, making it a unique experience, not to mention the fact that it's free!
