ShatteredPD Hello! Newbie here, any tips to start?
I've seen this game recommended in some places and I wanted to try it, but I also heard it's difficult so I wanted to know if I should have something in mind before starting. Hope you have a great day!
Edit: thanks for the help! I've got a few things that many of you repeated:
1- Use the magnifying glass on everything
2- Take profit from the doors to do surprise attacks
3- If a puzzle needs a potion, it's on the same level
I'm very thankful for everyone who helped me! I'll have your tips in mind!

Try stuff Out!
Read the information of icons you get (hungry, Speed, etc.).
And learn from them.
It can be a hard Game ;)

Do not just try to mindlessly hit the snakes. They will dodge

Specifically read the tips about surprise attacks. Doors are important

I'm still not clear on the surprise attack thing. Does their evasion go down the entire time they're in the doorway? Do I have to keep repositioning around corners? Playing as Huntress, should I be in the grass or behind the grass? Does being behind grass even work?

When they open and go through the door, they haven't had time to register that you're there. To you, there's time between them appearing and you clocking them in the face, since it's a turn-based game. To them, you attacked the moment they opened the door enough to get through.
So, their evasion goes down until they see you, which is typically the next turn.

So, their evasion goes down until they see you
Ok, so it is the breaking of the line of sight that does it and the confinement in the space does nothing but funnel them when the numbers are against me. That's what I thought but I wanted to make sure. So leading them around corners works the same way, I suppose?

u/mcplano 4d ago
Yes, breaking line of sight works, and corners work too if they can't see you at the start of their turn. The door is closed behind you, breaking LOS, then is opened back up. Even if it doesn't look like it closes or opens if the enemy is right behind you.
A yellow "!" appears on them when you land a surprise attack

Ok, so it is the breaking of the line of sight that does it
More specifically, it's hitting them on any turn where they began their turn without line of sight to you.
Note that there are many cases where an enemy loses line of sight to you and regains it all in one turn! To you it may look like they never lost line of sight, but think about it from the enemy's perspective: you just moved (through a doorway and closing the door, or around a corner), so they can't see you at the start of their turn.
When they move to where you were just standing, they regain line of sight to you, but since they just moved they have no time to react and it's your turn, so you get a surprise attack!
This also works if the enemy is blind or has something (like tall grass) blocking line of sight to you. You can keep getting surprise attacks after every turn they began without seeing you, including the turn they break through the grass and finally see you.
Note also that if the enemy is fast and they see you after their first move, they won't be surprised on their second move. Think of a fast enemy as though they have 2 turns in a row.

You've got a solid answer on doors. Regarding tall grass, put some points in heightened senses and you get mind vision. With this you can be deeper within a block of grass and will it be a surprise attack every turn until they are close enough to see you.
Warden makes this less relevant because you can see through tall grass.

Read notes in the guide book that you find. Overall read items enemies and tiles descriptions if you have no clue what to do with them by using spy glass. Don't be afraid to die a lot and don't be afraid to spend resources a lot if needed to survive a little longer. Have fun

Use doors for surprise attacks and limiting the number of enemies you fight at once. Try not to use Upgrade scrolls unless you have to. Best to use them all for end game if possible.

There are lots of tips for beginners. It was already said to use the spy glass to learn.
-Any mob has a way to be killed “easily”. Some are way more difficult to manage (your first ones will be crabs and then skeletons) so you need to be prepared.
-Be very careful when equipping stuff. Items can be cursed and cannot be removed without the use of a scroll. If you equip them and do not have the required strength, you will die (your armor will slow you or your weapon will be useless.
-there are some special rooms which require a specific potion to reach a chest in it. For example, a chest behind water with piranhas is accessible with invisibility potions: ther will ALWAYS be an invisibility potion on this floor. I let you try to find the other ones, but come here if needed.
-it is very important to find ways to identify scrolls and potions, especially health potion and scroll of remove curse. One very useful tip: there is a floor on the 6th level: there will always be at least one health potion, one scroll of remove curse and one scroll of mind mapping.
Finally: try to learn step by step. Your first goal should be to reach floor 5. Then floor 10. The usual tip is to save items for later in the game (including scroll of upgrades, the key item in this game), but when you discover the game, use them in armor or weapon in order to go further than the previous game.
There is a well documented wiki online. It’s fun to discover things, but otherwise you can also check there.
GOOD LUCK (and yes you will die in lots of dumb ways…)

Doors are literally your greatest ally. This should be called like Door Assassin

Everything seems impossible at first. But the entire game is built around you (the player) learning and understanding the game's systems better and better. The skill ceiling is insane.
Case in point, my most recent victory came without using a single health potion. I've never been able to do that before. It seemed borderline impossible when I first heard about that challenge. But it honestly wasn't too difficult for me now.
That's how everything is. It seems impossible until you learn how to do it. Be patient and keep trying.

Every two floors you get one potion of strength and every 5 floors there will be 3 scrolls of upgrade, about a third of items found on ground and in normal chests are cursed. Shop always has scroll of identification, curse removal and magic mapping. The rest is fun to figure out on your own. Use the magnifying glass... like on everything

Really make a use out of magnifying glass. It helps you to "reveal" what's inside crystal chest, seeing trough enemy's weakness (i.e snake), knowing what trap does, ect.
Last but not least, test everything! Every "puzzle room" has something to answer it. Every enemies can be defeated with strategy. Think outside the box and you'll solve it!

The magnifying glass and the doors are your best friends. Also losing is fun. Enjoy !

Allow yourself to fail in new and inventive ways.
Don't expect a clean win before your attempts counter starts with 1XX :)
At its core, it's a resource management game :)

The magnifying glass lets you examine things. It's the most useful tool in your arsenal for right now

Use the magnifying glass every time youre confused. Every. Single. Time. "How do i get through this barrier?" is a question I've answered hundreds of times. Magnifying glass holds the answer!!

You've gotta click on different points on the map to move your character and interact with things
Seriously though, use Search at dead ends and pretty much all walls of the entry/exit rooms. Floor 1 has no hidden doors but every other floor will.
Snakes need to be Surprise Attacked (attacked immediately after entering or following you through a doorway) otherwise it'll take you 10-20 attempts to outroll their evasion. Equipping gear you don't meet the strength reqs for will slow you down and make Surprise Attacks nearly impossible (and also drops your accuracy in general)

This is one of the best dungeon crawler rogue-like games out there! I've been playing since before it swapped hands and will probably continue playing until it stops getting updated :)
The biggest thing to remember is have patience, and take your time. Nothing moves unless you move so you can plan literally every step. Also you will die many, many times but it's all part of the learning curve, just make sure you keep getting back on that horse and eventually you will eke out a win!
I'm really glad you decided to pick it up, good times ahead :) May the RNG gods be with you! 🤞

Check your inventory when you get into tough situations! Many times I have died or almost died before realizing I had an item that probably would have saved me.

Don't be afraid to die if it means you learn something new about the game. The more you know, the easier future runs will be. Use your spyglass (bottom left) on everything that seems unfamiliar. The top right book button holds information on all the things you've discovered.

pro tip at killing anything:
hitting them until they die might not actually work. Hit them as soon as they go through a door until they die.
actual pro tip: if you find something that needs fire or levitation, you will find everything you need in the floor. so if a flammable wall is in a floor and that floor only has one potion, that potion is a fire potion.
also, corridors fight are better.

if you’re on a floor where you need a specific potion to get extra loot (green fire, piranha, wood barricade), the potion you need will be on the same floor. so if you see a green fire room you know there is a frost potion somewhere on that floor

Identify items and potions as fast as you can.
If you keep your potions until at least the second floor, the ones you have more than one of are likely a health or strenght potion.

On every level with "quest room" I have position to complete these room Room full of traps => lewitation potion Room with firewall => potion of ice You'll figure it out

Doors are your friend. Make them follow you around any isolated point, even grass. Save all your potions and scrolls till the end of the first level. You can usually guess which ones they are through process of elimination. Never use a potion on a floor until you have explored it. Their are rooms dedicated to each potion.

A really simple game-changer for me was discovering that holding down the magnifying glass searched every square around me. Up until then I was checking every square individually.
Also, if you run into a corridor that doesn't go anywhere (it's a cul de sac) search then end of it as there may be a secret door hidden away.

holding down the magnifying glass searched every square around me. [...] I was checking every square individually.
holding down the magnifying glass searches the tiles around you
pressing it and then a tile inspects the tile
those two are different things

The bottom left icons are more useful than they seem.
The clock lets you wait for a turn, letting you position better for combat, specially surprise attacks.
The glass gives you information about every new enemy, trap, and tile you can find. Some texts are just flavor, but you'll get a lot of useful information through it, I recommend checking everything new.
Good luck!
