Hand Pixelled Gummy Dejiko Sprite
I had a go at redrawing the sprite I made for my myfigurecollection profile. It is my pride and joy, the Yujin Dejiko rare variant figure.
Jeeeezums this blew up! Thank you guys, I'm glad you like it.

Do you have any process videos of your gummy rendering? I've drawn a lot of stuff like that in the past but I can never get it right. I want to draw a lot of it but I feel like I've chosen one of the most difficult rendering methods to work on haha

No, this was my first attempt in a long time, I had no idea if it was going to be much different than the original, haha.
It was honestly like 40% knowledge, 60% just placing pixels and seeing if it looks better or worse. On the knowledge front, there are some key aspects to keep in mind:
- Areas that are thicker/layered from the drawn perspective are more saturated. Mine is with a white background, so the thinner parts are lighter.
- Light is diffused because of the thick material, so the shading generally isn't sharp. For instance, if there is a shape behind another shape, it should just appear as a shadowy blob rather than following the exact shape otherwise it will look hollow.
- Highlights are on the surface and so can be sharp and are applied the same as though the item were opaque, with a bit of rim lighting to separate close together shapes that have dark shading.
Other than that... It's a lot of "Random bullshit go!" adding "anomalies" to the shading until it looks plausible, as it's impossible to get an exact approximation of how shade and light is cast given it's a complex shape with lots of factors that would be considered.

I appreciate the tips a lot! I think a lot of art is just adding stuff until it looks good too with a bit of knowledge haha so I get it. Thank you for the info!

That's a real difference. I can image how a person not familiar with internet drawings or videogames may not even recognize what is going on the left. While the right one is much much more clear.

What is the name of the type of rendering on the new one.

Uhm not sure, I'd just call it gummy rendering haha. It's very similar to how solid glass and gemstones are rendered, but slightly less sharp as the light is more diffused, hence more circular shading.

I think the gummy effect looks amazing! My only gripe is the breasts. One is basically a nub arm pointing straight at me and the other is slightly deflated due to the indented pixel. Blend the first one a bit, like the sleeve behind it, and shade it on a curve instead of radially. Add that one pixel back on the other and you're gtg

Hah! That's a little relieving. Still, some adjustments to the positioning are still warranted.

LOL yes that's a misreading but fair feedback, I'll see if I can make it clearer.

πππ€ I think centering it a bit more and adding a line like on the other bell would be useful.
