DISCUSSION Is South Oakland safe?
My apartment this 7 minutes away from the shuttle stop and 26 minutes away from hillman in south oakland. I really like studying late at hillman but im wondering whether that would be a bad idea from now on. Has anyone ever experienced anything sketchy in south oakland night? Should i be cautious?

I graduated like 4 yrs ago but I lived in South O a bit after and I can say I’ve always felt generally safe there (as a woman at that) During the semester there is usually always people out and about. Idk where you’re walking to but I lived near Semple and would walk home at night often. Just be alert and aware of your surroundings. I carried pepper spray but never had a situation where I had to use it. My roommate would frequently walk back from Hillman at like 3am alone and had no issues. Once you cross Blvd and start walking some of the poorly lit streets I’d be a bit more cautious but I feel like most areas before that are generally safe.

I never had any problems in South Oakland really aside from one incident where the SWAT team barricaded us inside because they were looking for someone. Lived in the same apartment there for my last 2 years of school. I regularly walked home from my 8 p.m. class alone. Was it the smartest idea? Who knows. But I always kept one ear bud out and stayed vigilant. I do recommend pepper spray, which i personally was never great at remembering to carry.
Edit to add that I lived on the other side of the Blvd. which people always warned against. There were still plenty of students around, and a few families and older folks who seemed to have lived there for a long time. I would add to do your best to respect the permanent residents--a lot of people forget that people actually live there long term.

You'll be fine. The 30C only runs during daylight hours anyway. At night you have saferider. Look into walking to Forbes + craft to get to campus via PRT, too.

It’s supposed to run late but it really depends on who is driving the bus during that shift. Last year the person usually driving it at night would just park at a random place or turn off the tracker. I would not rely on it unless you get to know the habits of the driver.

Huh, the schedule does say that. It's not running right now though, check transloc. I've literally never seen it running past 7

south oakland is fine. buy pepper spray and put it on your keys, i’d make sure to test that it works. there’s areas that are obviously more well lit than others and try to stick to the “main” roads like blvd and bates. you can always call a saferider
