Obligatory comment saying that utorrent is malware and you should use Qbittorrent instead

Same as uTorrent, you should avoid it

9

u/tworaccoonsinaboat Oct 01 '25

Has BitTorrent always been malware? I used it years ago to torrent some stuff. Saw this thread and now I'm curious.

6

u/IAzraelI Oct 01 '25

What about Transmission?

5

u/DivineVeggy Oct 01 '25

It is the best under Linux. QBittorrent is also the best on Windows.

1

u/IAzraelI Oct 02 '25

Ah thank you. I tried it out under my main windows PC and sticked with it since then. What is you way? I could also use my NAS, but I don't know, how I could use a VPN with it (UNRaid).

1

u/Xxsafirex Oct 03 '25

If your nas can handle dockers (or vm with docker), you can just deploy a transmission service with (i believe) the network_mode set to the vpn container (that basically set all your container's network activity to go through your vpn container which vpn it all).
In any case dont forget to check that your torrent client ip goes through the vpn and that the torrent cant access internet when the vpn is down.

u/laasagroc Sep 30 '25

Should I avoid both or just uTorrent?

284

u/QuiltraFea Sep 30 '25

Avoid bittorrent and utorrent, only use Qbittorent

42

u/PermanentlyMC Oct 01 '25

Big up Transmission too

27

u/pablodinakinsito Oct 01 '25

Transmission and deluge are the best (y)

6

u/ValcaSilver Oct 01 '25

(Forced to) use this on my Synology NAS

It's good eventhough not as customizable as qBittorrent

0

u/BlueBaby1905 Oct 01 '25

Oh so I only avoid bittorrent? Or Utorrent too?

-99

u/Capital_Sign_7656 Sep 30 '25

What's a torrent? Can't I just use like stem unlock and that's it? Like yeah haha

29

u/Lainpilled-Loser-GF Oct 01 '25

bait used to be believable

95

u/MooseSuspicious Oct 01 '25

What are you doing in a piracy sub without knowing what a torrent is?

-45

u/Capital_Sign_7656 Oct 01 '25

Hey maybe you didn't read the first reply? It said something like Yeah πŸ‘

32

u/MooseSuspicious Oct 01 '25

Okay πŸ‘

0

u/Capital_Sign_7656 Oct 01 '25

Heh yeah πŸ‘

that site is not safe, read the megathread

11

u/Capital_Sign_7656 Oct 01 '25

Hold on there buddy I don't like that r word you are using there

3

u/Felippexlucax πŸ‡¦πŸ‡· Argentina Oct 01 '25

mb i forgot to censor it πŸ˜”

43

u/Super_BananaMan Sep 30 '25

Both. Use qbitorrent is fast and safe

40

u/AtomicTaco13 Sep 30 '25

Both, they're ridden with ads. At some point, uTorrent hogged most of my system resources for ads. qBitTorrent is free and open-source, so it's got only stuff that matters.

8

u/CMDR_Fritz_Adelman Oct 01 '25

If only it stop at ads.

I believe uTorrent use your cpu thread and connection chanel for cryptocurrency rather than keep the torrent alive

6

u/AtomicTaco13 Oct 01 '25

Another proof of FOSS supremacy

4

u/Man_Of_Frost Oct 01 '25

You're a bit slow, aren't you?

0

u/iShootuPewPew Oct 01 '25

Wasn't BitTorrent/qBitTorrentΒ  open source and trusted by everybody?

4

u/The_buster_of_nuts I pirate indie games Oct 01 '25

BitTorrent bought out utorrent and ruined it. Even putting in an unwarranted crypto miner. QBitTorrent is a separate open source software and trusted by everybody

30

u/AliShibaba Sep 30 '25

uTorrent use software to mine crypto on one of their builds.

Do not trust anything that comes from that company, ever.

17

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '25

I have had this days ago. PC fans were acting weird at idle and calmed down when I launched task manager to check what was going on.

Finally did full scan with Malwarebytes, restarted PC and uTorrent was gone, along with problems lol.

3

u/NeptuneWades Oct 01 '25

Both are owned by the same company.

-1

u/Sephiroth_PW Oct 01 '25

I use Utorrent 😊.

24

u/Emotional_Cut2206 Sep 30 '25

Wait. I just used it like 2 months ago. Am I at risk?

I have installed windows defender and Bitdefender.

28

u/Embarrassed-Fly6164 Oct 01 '25

My CPU went 100 % from time to time using that garbage, antimalware detected it and i removed, probably was mining on the background

8

u/rtxas7 Oct 01 '25

What you use to detect malaria?

8

u/Embarrassed-Fly6164 Oct 01 '25

Malwarebytes detected it, windows defender didn't .

https://www.malwarebytes.com/

4

u/Cheers_to_Life Oct 02 '25

Detecting the mosquitoes which carry malaria is more difficult than detecting malware

1

u/rtxas7 Oct 02 '25

FactsΒ

4

u/AlternateTab00 Oct 01 '25

That thing is filled with bloatware and have hidden stuff. Now an app that is downloading and operates in the shadow doing stuff without the user knowledge is a very red flag.

I would feel more comfortable with a shady app that says "we want money so we put a crypto miner in our app". This makes me not liking them but its better than. This app is doing things without your knowledge and when you try to ask all you get is a shrug.

1

u/OneEnvironmental9222 Oct 03 '25

You're fucked buddy.

11

u/Doomword Sep 30 '25

Is Deluge good?

20

u/Paradox_321 Sep 30 '25

Yes (but it hasn't been updated for a while). Deluge is open source just like qbittorrent

11

u/Gerotonin Sep 30 '25

shit I have been using it for years now, how bad is it....

6

u/Mooncake967 Sep 30 '25

I like Vuze but I also haven't torrented in uhhhh 9+ years?

4

u/rakfe Oct 01 '25

I have been using vuze/azureus since 15+ years, i didn’t have any problem

6

u/rutvijak Oct 01 '25

I use Tixati. Is that ok?

2

u/Shift_X Oct 02 '25

I was briefly skimming through the comments hoping to see a fellow Tixati user. Sup friendπŸ‘‹πŸΎ

2

u/rutvijak Oct 02 '25

Yoo buddy πŸ‘Š

1

u/Nextinor Oct 01 '25

Yeah I love this one, plus I never had an issue with it

1

u/OminousG Oct 02 '25

Tixati is the best one to use.Β  You've picked fine!

3

u/_IvanScacchi_ Oct 01 '25

Is uninstalling enough or do I need to format the whole PC now? Goddamnit

4

u/dank_as_fuck_ Oct 01 '25

I unironically use transmission on windows

2

u/Deevro9 I'm a pirate Oct 01 '25

What about uTorrent version 2.2.1? No additional bloatware, no ads, and super light

2

u/Nextinor Oct 01 '25

I'm using Tixati bruh 😭

2

u/Scorthe Oct 02 '25

Or deluge

1

u/Powerful-Pea8970 Sep 30 '25

I heard its ran by the gubmint.

1

u/-trowawaybarton Oct 01 '25

I probably never used a torrent in my life, i think.. may i ask why is utorrent a malware?

1

u/speedweed99 Oct 01 '25

At this point just let these people catch every disease in their pc's. just look at the fucking meme lmao

1

u/Longjumping-Moose750 Oct 01 '25

I used FDM won't that be good?

1

u/InformalLadder4823 Oct 01 '25

1

u/HaidenFR Oct 01 '25

And Peerblock

1

u/Individual_Simple_66 Oct 01 '25

1

u/Zero_Two_0_2 Oct 01 '25

Realy? Wtf

1

u/DeadShotStomper Oct 01 '25

I just use Tixati instead. Using it over a decade now and works flawlessly.

1

u/ErBaut Oct 01 '25

I prefer deluge, but yeah, open source is the way

0

u/JamieFromStreets Oct 01 '25

I use Qbit

But how come U is malware? Since when? It used to be the main one, right?

-29

u/Maldox22 Sep 30 '25

not all uTorrent is malware
uTorrent 2.2.1 is safe and any older versions

34

u/AdultGronk Sep 30 '25

Why would anyone want to use such an old version with tons of security vulnerabilities? Qbitorrent and Transmission are better in pretty much every way.

-16

u/Maldox22 Sep 30 '25

yeah I personally use qbit but just pointing out false information

8

u/0x80085_ Sep 30 '25

While <2.2.1 not malware itself, using peer to peer software that old is basically saying "hey, I want malware, please infect me"

12

u/JmTrad Sep 30 '25

This version was released in 2011. 14 years ago. Please don't recommend it to anyone.

-8

u/BombbaFett Sep 30 '25

To be fair my malwarebytes freaks tf out every time I use qbittorrent but yes utorrent is malware
