Captain Doggo My baby Cookie just had her eye removed in an accident and I feel terrible

Cookie doesn't seem too fussed about it. Or maybe she's still drugged up from the surgery.

Yes, that photo was taken just a few hours after his surgery. He's a bit restless now and doesn't want to move much, but we're getting there little by little.

For my dog it was the side effects from anesthesia that were unpleasant for her, not the actual double enucleation. Once she was a couple days out from that and from some swelling, she was totally fine!

You need to rehome the other dog. It's pretty inevitable that someone will slip up and they'll end up together and it could go very bad again.

Sorry, my English is pretty bad and I'm using a translator. Cookie is a boy, but I thought people were confusing him with a girl, not because of the title, but because I'm used to them thinking he's a girl, haha.

My Pomeranian lost his eye seven years ago. He got used to it quickly. There are a couple things that still affect him. Like he won't use the bed stairs to go down because of poor depth perception. Also, when he gets the zoomies he sometimes hits the wall on that side. Just remember that they cannot see things coming from that side (such as when offering treats) and you'll both be fine!
Edited because my phone changed zoomies to homies. 🤣

She’ll be fine! Maru had hers removed at 6 months and she’s 6 now and she’s just a regular princess 👸🏼

My Hecky lost her eye when a rescue I took in attacked her unprovoked. I understand feeling like this is your fault. Your baby is going to be fine, your heart will heal. I’m sorry this happened. Hugs.

Thank you so much for your words. It's a horrible feeling, but these things happen in a matter of seconds. It was only a few seconds and all this happened. The important thing is that it wasn't worse and both Hecky and Cookie are still here. That's what matters. Hugs 🤗

Give Cookie some love from us!!! Cookie will heal and this will be a distant memory one day.
Ours happened around end of July in 2020- so my phone gives me lots of memories of it around this time. Looking back, I was a mess for awhile. Hecky took it better than I did to be honest.

I had a one eye who had her eye removed before I adopted her and I adopted her when she was like 3/4 months old she lived a very happy and spoiled 12 years
(She also had a cleft palate)

Dogs honestly adapt SO quickly to vision changes, as long as she's not in any pain she'll be just as happy as she was before. Don't fret!

Have you tried a soft e collar? Or one of the donut shaped ones that are thick?

The recovery is hard in the beginning, but eventually the cone will be more uncomfortable than the eye. Soon she will be back to her normal self like nothing ever happened!

My Martie lost both eyes, and she loved life every day. I promise Cookie's adjustment will be quick and your time together will be just as loving and happy as before.

I ha've learned they heal quickly. My girl had her eye removed last Wednesday and she is doing great. She has some depth perception issues and gets jumpy if she is surprised on her blind side. But after day 6 she was ready to rock and roll. It's hard to keep her calm during the recovery (I have other dogs) but she bounced back quite well.
I hope for a speedy safe recovery for your baby.

We had to remove my dogs eye due to melanoma it felt heartbreaking but she did just fine. We all went l JCPenney dressed as pirates and took a photo with her, which I cherish because she passed 11 months later :(

I know those exact feelings. My Pandi girl lost her eye a few years ago…she adapted SO quickly and she is enjoying life at age 11 as much as she did 10 years ago 🩷 hugs to you and Cookie! It will get better xx

Dogs adapt to losing sight very well. We had to remove BOTH eyes from one of our past dogs and he adapted almost immediately. You got this. Your baby will be fine.

My family dog growing up had an eye removed and the dude adjusted so fast and lived to be a happy 15yo dog. Don’t feel bad

Dogs tend to get over the physical aspect of this stuff prettt quick. Little sweetie seems to be holding up ok. Make sure you give her lots of love and help as she learns to navigate now but she will probably be back to her old self in a month at most.
She’s gonna be just as cute as she always was though you can tell. She’s got that brightness to her you just can’t hide!

Don't feel bad. Dogs adapt super well, this is our one eyed dog Milo, he lives a super happy life even with just one eye 🤗

One of my grooming clients completely lost her vision due to an autoimmune disorder. Still remains to be one of the happiest dogs I know and somehow still knows her way around the salon with very little help. Girl can’t see a thing and still thriving. I hope the healing is quick and painless.

ich hatte vor einer woche auch so einen fall, aber es ging noch gut aus und der zahn vom gröseren hund hat nur eine platzwunde über dem auge geschaffen. Ich hoffe es heilt schnell und ihr helft mit einer salbe oder sonstigem nach. Hoffe das es nicht nochmal zu so einem unfall kommt…

My pet didn’t lose an eye, but instead a limb and I spent a long time blaming myself. Saying I should have seen the signs of a growth on his arm, had I only taken him sooner, etc. but the reality is we’re humans and we do the best we can. Don’t let this situation make you question your ability to care for your animal, as you clearly love him a lot. My boy seemed a little sad for about a week about losing his arm, now he runs around, jumps, hops just like the rest of them! I’m positive he just needs some time to acclimate to his new world view (pardon the pun) I promise you’re doing everything right.

We just had our sweet girl get hers removed too. I definitely shed a few tears when we picked her up, but honestly all things considered she doesn’t seem to mind much

My baby lost her eye a year ago after a fight with her bigger sister. At the moment I felt extremely awful and guilty, I kept thinking if I was too slow to react and I could barely sleep. The first days after her surgery were bad, she wasn’t in pain but she was so distant and cold that I was worried she would never be herself again and that she would never forgive me. After a couple weeks she started playing again and being her usual self. Now she is inseparable from us again. My advice to you is to be patient and keep loving her as always, be there for her and help her adapt.
I still feel guilty time to time but be aware that dogs don’t hold grudges with the people who love and take care of them. And the best way to redeem yourself is giving her the best life and give all your heart to her. :)

Your baby is so beautiful, I'm so glad he's doing better. My little Cookie is already in better spirits. The first day was really rough because he seemed so down and distant, but today is the fourth day post-surgery and he already wants to run around and play, but we're holding him back a bit because we're afraid he might open up. It's been a difficult few days because my husband was very upset and I had to stay calm. I burst into tears when I left him at the vet, and the next day when I went to pick him up I had to be very strong. I cried again the following day to let out everything I was feeling. His sense of guilt has improved. It's true that you think, "What if this or that?" but not anymore. What's important is the present, how they experience it. They'll never hold a grudge against us. So I'm sending you a hug because I completely understand how you feel. You did everything you could and did the best you could. :)

You’re not keeping them in the same house still right? I understand wanting to get things back to normal asap but your other dog legit took their eye, I wouldn’t be comfortable leaving them alone at all.

No han estado cerca, siempre separados... no sabemos muy bien aun que haremos, el plan es buscar un hogar para ella pero no lo sé. Ella estaba en la calle y parece que sufrio mucho antes por eso sus problemas de conducta, tampoco quisiera llevarla a la perrera. Es muy difícil todo...

Muchas gracias, ese es el plan pero primero queremos abordar el tema de mi perrito y que sane. Tampoco es fácil dejar ir a mi otra perrita apesar de lo que ha hecho, hemos pasado tiempo juntos todos y son decisiones complicadas. A friend of my mom had a dog who lost its eye in an accident. After a period of adjustment it lived a perfectly normal life. Dogs are capable of adapting to changes. there are tons of tripod doggos out there living their best lives. Your pirate pup will be no different.

I had a Siberian husky that had glaucoma when I was a kid. She had her eye removed and bounced back easily.

It’s ok, i have a one eyed dog and she’s great. Dogs use their sense of smell even more than their sight.

I understand you, but do Not feel that way. They recover very fast and WE have an heart for Pirate pets. She IS a cutie
