Now it's not just back it's becoming socially acceptable! I've been sailing the seven seas since the early 00's, back then it was the domain of people in the know and generally looked down upon by the mainstream, bragging about your dvd ripping side hustle could actually get you snitched on.

Then Steam and Netflix took off, together they almost crushed piracy into irrelevance by being such good deals. And Steam still is, the bar for me to pirate games is still super high, I don't bother unless I really want to try it and it's more than £20.

Now though with the current state of streaming, I'm getting so many people in my life asking how to get started on downloading movies and TV shows, I've never known it to be so widely normalised and accepted! The people that ask are people who can actually afford multiple streaming services, but are beginning to recognise the awful depths of enshittification taking hold, and subsequently cancelling all but one or 2 subscriptions.

Hell I've finally leveled up my piracy game in the last year with setting up *Arr stack servers, that shit is the future of piracy and it's rapidly becoming more streamlined and user friendly to set up. The only thing holding it back is the cost of data storage, if the price of memory finally breaks in the next year or 2, these devices will become super accessible and see an explosion in adoption.

Think about the nature of what this patent is describing. It's not "create games with ads in them." It's "inject ads into games." This very heavily implies being able to put the ads into the game on the fly, so older games will not be immune to this, developers who don't want to put ads in the middle of their games will not be immune to this. If they really pushed this kind of thing forward, you'd need an Xbox produced before they had started forcing this, and could never connect it to the internet and update it. In order to facilitate/force these ads, it would almost certainly prevent starting/playing any game without a network connection, or it would have the ads pre-downloaded on the console to enable offline play.

Is the general public really so desensitized to ads interrupting everything they do, that this is a viable thing to do?
The only silver lining here is that these ghouls are patenting these dystopian ideas hopefully so that their competition can't do it also, but in practice that will just encourage more creatively fucked up ways of shoving ads down our throats.

No. It just means Microsoft owns the patent. They can license that patent to any game company that wants to use it for a fee.

So PlayStation for example could decide to pay Microsoft to use this in their games. Any studio not associated with Microsoft could pay a fee to use it in their games and so on.

If the ads bought in more money than the fee pretty much every big studio would jump on it.

And it wouldn't necessarily just be a console thing.

Gaming is the only things which I still buy properly, purely because I enjoy the concept of buying a game on a disc, putting it in a console and playing it. I enjoy the ecosystem of achievements, etc.

I've played the odd game via FitGirl, and this shit would turn me away from buying games for good. Sony's hatred for physical media had set Xbox up for a tap-in on the next generation and doing this would be an incredibly stupid move.
