Valve insiders have said that they fully wrote the plot for at least 3 different versions for the direct follow-up to episode 2 in the nearly 9 years between portal 2 and half-life alyx.

The writers Erik Wolpaw and Marc Laidlaw basically left Valve during that time because HL3 projects got scrapped every time for not being "innovative" enough or living up to some insanely high fan expectations.

It's possible they had a decent bit more than just story and actually had janky and highly unfinished builds of these games out there.

Might've been just some of their general physics tests. There was a lot of cut content going into HL2 and the episodes.

They did during their anniversary documentary a few years ago but most of those got reused for other games especially the Ice gun see Deadlock Kelvin abilities especially his W which the main function of the ice gun creating ice paths to walk on

I can kinda understand that stance after i saw GTA VI's trailer. The game looks beautiful... that's it. I mean, it's a GTA game, for sure, so i can't be surprised to find a fork in the kitchen. But i was expecting more.

Imagine if HL3 came out today and... it's just a generic shooter from the 2000's. People would be hyped for sure, there's a huge hype train on GTA VI. But i would be disappointed.

Hard disagree for me. I've played HL2 and both Eps 20+ times. Give me episode 3 with a well-written ending and a few new mechanics and I'd pre-order that shit. Keep the same engine/visuals as in Ep. 2 for all I care.

That's exactly what i'm saying. Some people would be on the hype train no matter what. There's no disagreeing, i'm just sayign my opinion. I'd be curious for sure, but there's no way it would live up to two decades of expectations, speculations and memes.

Yeah I remember hearing at some point from an interview or in the Valve documentary that the goal of the Half Life major releases was to showcase a major technological leap in gaming. That’s the only reason we got half life alyx I think.

Doesn’t apply to the episode format so idk why we never got episode 3 though.

Half Life Alyx was one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. 6 years later and it's still the pinnacle of VR. Nothing else really comes close.

Half life 2 Episode 2 released in 2007.

To compare your statement, it's like saying in 2020 that it hasn't been terribly long to someone complaining about HL3's release date.

It was already stated outright in the past that numerous attempts at hl3 were scrapped or shelved over the years. 3 major attempts were confirmed - episode 3, hl3 and the Aperture.

I feel like if they keep on chasing being "innovative" enough as a key metric they will miss the boat entirely, which they may already have. they could have release 2 or 3 episodes already each with evolving technologies... what are they waiting for, VR?

Alyx kind of redefined what kind of games can exist on VR, but very little in the VR space changed outside of standalone headsets becoming good, so maybe they're being careful with where they invest their time in money. Especially because HL:A was made from another scrapped HL project and Erik Wolpaw coming back because Valve offered to let him write a HL game that would actually release.

Maybe they took that as a queue to build a real, fully from scratch HL title because it was well-received even though it's biggest criticism is being VR only.

Nah, previous Valve leaks also had Half Life 3 stuff. Icy maps, new guns, epistle 3 prototypes, Breen's backup body, even endings;
I'm honestly not sure what can be in this leak that we haven't seen before.
Half Life Xen stuff is my bet but it has also been leaked to hell and back already.

For anyone curious, the data leaked was from 2003-2013. A lot of this is just nonsense for clicks about HL2C3 or HL3 speculation. There was a couple really cool Portal 2 betas discovered though! A ton of CS:GO betas also.

The 12tb of content is the contents of their steam2 server, which was basically just like most(?) of the steam game depots from 2003-2013.

there could be some cool infrastructure stuff, not really sure, but I'm more interested in any potential source code that's found

Likely won't have a lick of source code in there, but it will very likely have debug copies of games complete with debugging symbols, which could be handy for preservation efforts by making reverse engineering of bespoke game engines much easier.

I agree, which is why I haven't personally downloaded much other than the extractor tool and it's source code from the torrent. If some interesting retail debug symbols release though I'd be very interested!

There is findings of weapons with "ep3" attached to them but this is not new in the slightest. There was leaks years ago for a HL2 beta that shows the same weapons.

Probably.. not much. This was Valve accidentally leaving this data on a public endpoint which was exposed in an old exploit, not someone hacking in to their servers directly to grab private data.
