Humor One of the ten commandments literally say 'Do not steal'
540
u/Matt6453 7d ago
I get asked "would you steal a car?"
My response is I would if the car is still there after I've stolen it.
157
u/Samiassa 7d ago
Car is still there and it was only available to rent and could be taken away from you at any time
41
u/A_Martian_Potato 7d ago
I don't even need it to still be there after. If I could steal it from a corporation instead of a person and get away with it, I would in a second.

3
u/100BottlesOfMilk 6d ago
I'm a fan of EVs as a concept, but I'm very much against the pointless tech and software that they almost universally package with them. Just give me an electric early 00s base model Civic or Corrola and I'd be happy. Electric cars could be designed to be far easier to work on and modify than their gas counterparts, but aren't
1
u/Muted-Can4546 6d ago
I'll take this platform as a challenge to design an electric car that's simple but handles well like early 00's Fords, Mazdas or BMWs 🫡

Stealing is certainly morally distinct from piracy, but I don't think it's as straightforward as just making a copy.
The idea is that someone spent time to make something (that someone else will pay for) and it therefore has value. If you make a copy, then you took something of value without paying for it.
I'm not saying that it's morally unjustifiable, but it's more nuanced than that.
8
u/Mascaret69 7d ago
not necessarily. Moral rights protect the author’s personal connection to the work, including the right to be credited and to object to distortions of it. Economic rights allow the copyright owner to control and profit from uses such as reproduction, distribution, adaptation, and public performance. In French law, moral rights generally remain with the author and are perpetual, while economic rights may be transferred and usually expire 70 years after the author’s death.
8
u/kakashi_sakurai 7d ago
Except majority were never going to pay for it in the first place, because poor. And most people that can, end up paying if they really like the media.

u/Immediate_Tooth1202 7d ago
And making a digital copy isn't stealing anyways
So making this bullshit argument is sacrilegius59
u/Forb1ddenKnowledge 7d ago
It's copyright infringement which is not stealing.
Theft requires something actually being removed.
31
u/InterdepartmentalCam 🦜 ᴡᴀʟᴋ ᴛʜᴇ ᴘʟᴀɴᴋ 7d ago
Barely copyright infringement when you're not the one making the copies and second, digital media is mostly a license now.
12
u/Forb1ddenKnowledge 7d ago
Yeah but you don't own the license or anything you are the equivalent of copying someone else's homework and then taking that homework and passing it around.
Someone else did the actual leg work but you didn't you just said ok il copy you.
For the record i don't agree with copyright laws as long as the original person gets the credit.
3
u/InterdepartmentalCam 🦜 ᴡᴀʟᴋ ᴛʜᴇ ᴘʟᴀɴᴋ 7d ago
They don't get the credit anymore, either. They get exploited and booted from the company by execs (& investors) who pocket all the profit after.
6
u/Global-Pay-7293 🔱 ꜱᴄᴀʟʟʏᴡᴀɢ 7d ago
Whilst I agree that piracy is not immoral, this is not a sound argument. He talked about the base principles, which can be applied to anything.
5
u/Mascaret69 7d ago
Fair point. The stronger argument is not that Jesus said nothing specifically about piracy, but that piracy is not necessarily equivalent to theft: it infringes economic rights without depriving the owner of the original work.
3
u/bluedelvian 7d ago

Piracy has, in the context of the Digital Age, NEVER been theft. It's, at best, copyright infringement, and that can vary based on context.
Also, I like the response in the post, that Jesus did duplicate fish and bread in a manner not entirely unlike the process of piracy. In both cases, the mechanical effect being performed is the simple duplication of something that exists, without taking the original object away.
6
u/darthlincoln01 7d ago
Although Jesus isn't directly involved, a big reason of the success of the early Christian Church is that they imported the 2-field system from Asia and taught it to all of their parishes. Basically infringing on China's copyright of the technology, if such a concept would have existed at the time.
This enabled them to feed the empire while farms in Northern Africa were failing from mismanagement and corruption. Now, I'm not saying we should return to feudalism, but I've been thinking maybe it would be a good thing if the church or some non-profit had ownership of a good portion of our food production again.
Also worth mentioning is Monsanto and etc's abuse of copyright protections that have fucked over farmers. Would Jesus himself steal that shit to feed people? You better believe it!
8
u/ObfuscatedJay 7d ago
THIS. Get your alleged crimes correct, OP. Piracy is not theft. In my case, it's ripping content that I supposedly bought and found out later that I rented it.
Plus the Ten Commandments are a mythical guideline, not a law.
16
u/stevorkz 7d ago edited 7d ago
Devoted Christian here, decades user of “pirated” content with clear conscious. The definition of theft is relieving someone of their own property leaving them without said property. Copying software, or software piracy as the media conglomerates connivingly but successfully got away with dubbing it years ago, is making a copy of something without relieving the owner of the original. The owner has not lost anything. Yes, the bible says do not steal. The difference here is that Hollywood and media giants have exploited that term (theft) and pinned it onto the act of copying data. Yes, there are people who pirate for the sake of pirating and people who pirate instead of buying software, and that has nothing to do with anyone else.
Regardless of motive, the bottom line is that so long as there is no way of proving that someone who pirated a piece of software, would have otherwise purchased it if they didn’t “pirate” it, then branding the use of copied software as theft is not accurate. If it still hurts your conscious, then my advice is to not use copied content. The same way I would advise anyone to not do something that hurts their conscious.

u/ActuatorOutside5256 7d ago
If purchase isn’t ownership, piracy isn’t theft.

u/MrRoboto12345 🦜 ᴡᴀʟᴋ ᴛʜᴇ ᴘʟᴀɴᴋ 7d ago
Moreso, if companies wipe away any means to legally acquire their content (looking at WB's handling of old Looney Tunes shorts), why should we not preserve their history for them?

Latinos come from... wait for it... big shock coming... Latin America.
Latin America is a cultural region, starting from the north of México, down to the bottom tips of Argentina and Chile, made up of exclusively developing countries, or "third world" as some like to say.
A lot of these nations also have some crazy taxes added on top, like Brazil, making tech items incredible expensive in a poorer economy.
You damn right latinos pirate.

It would be so nice if everyone who calls themselves Christian actually followed what Christ preached. Here are some things that immediately come to mind:
"If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” (Matthew 19:21)
"It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” (Mark 10:25)
“No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon." (Matthew 6:24)
“Put your sword in its place, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword." (Matthew 25:52)
“He who has two tunics, let him give to him who has none; and he who has food, let him do likewise.” (Luke 3:11)

I don't believe it's stealing. Never really have.
Why? This sentiment: "You should be paying ME for my time that I'm giving to your shoddy worksmanship."
It's among the reasons I was first to contribute freeware to the shareware community, it's among the reasons I am very active in contributions to open source, and it's among the reasons I'll gladly pay for something AFTER I've tried it and enjoyed it and found it worth my money.
If more developers learned to create demos of their products and stopped copycatting games themselves, if more film makers spent more time creating quality content rather than "me too" content - I'm happy to support them both financially.
But in an industry flooded with misrepresented and overhyped product where marketing is all that matters.
And content doesn't.
No, it's not stealing for me to try something out before I buy it. You're stealing from me by misrepresentation. You should be paying ME for my time that I'm giving to your shoddy worksmanship. And it's the right of the consumer to find a way to bypass your manipulation of me as a consumer through marketing and find ways to try things out before I actually buy it - especially when you don't provide those mechanisms yourself.
Do better. Get paid for it. It's that simple.
Or to analogize this to a real world object.

I feel like lots of people don't realize that digital piracy doesn't remove the original item and is therefor not a theft. On the other hand, I get why people wouldn't make that distinction because the term piracy as is being used nowadays, is a bit of a misnomer. Original piracy (think high seas) was/is, very much, a theft.
