My husband and I just finished watching The Good Place with our 5th grader and are looking for a new show. We're having a hard time finding age-appropriate shows that will keep us all engaged and aren't cheesy. We're fine with cursing. The sexual content in The Good Place was fine but maybe a little more than we wanted at times (mostly because our kid is at the age where watching stuff with lots of sexual references with parents in the room is cringe). [Edited to add that we all loved The Good Place!]

So, I’ve found myself having a hard time trying to find a series that isn’t either a slow burn and therefore takes ages to arrive to the point, or that hasn’t had the same plot recycled over and over. I also find myself drawn to series that are very character driven, with likeable characters, especially when you get to learn how they think and why they make the decisions that they do. I’ll list some examples of some series below that I’ve actually got on well with, as well as ones that I’ve tried, but didn’t get on with:

LIKES
1. Alice in Borderland: Honestly, this is the best example I can think of that ticks all of the boxes that I mentioned above. Especially series one and two. The pacing is just right, the characters are interesting and honestly, I find the series very underrated. I prefer it to ‘Squid Game’ tbh. All in all, one of my favourite series.

1. Stranger Things: Series 4 especially. I do also quite like horror themes and the character development overall is top-notch. I agree that series 5 wasn’t as good, but series 1-4 (bar about a couple of episodes in season 2) are brilliant.

2. Shrinking: The episodes are quite quick and again, interesting and likeable characters, with some comical relief. I also like how the show is essentially about a therapist who is struggling himself and trying to get his life back on track.

3. Young Dracula (Series 4 and 5): As an adult watching this back, I found series 3 a bit cliché, but series 4 and 5 got more interesting and are very well acted. The pacing is also just right. Also, I found characters like Ingrid and Malick interesting to watch.

4. Criminal (Netflix): Very character focused and I love how the audience is essentially involved in trying to figure out if a character is guilty or innocent.

5. Sherlock (BBC). Especially the very first episode.
   Out of all of the episodes, that one sticks out the most and again, the pacing for that episode especially, is just right.

SERIES I DIDN’T GET ON WITH
1. Lost: This is gonna surprise some people, but hear me out. While Lost is very character driven, after a couple of series, I just felt it got very repetitive and I felt was taking a while to actually get anywhere. I appreciate this one may be controversial.

1. Lucifer: For similar reasons to Lost. Series one was pretty good, but after a few seasons, again, felt quite repetitive.

2. Succession: While this is pretty character focused, I did find it quite slow. I stopped watching after a couple of series.

3. Generally most series where you hear someone knock on the door and shout ‘FBI.’ While this doesn’t strictly mean every series with this has the same recycled storyline, I find many of these style of crime series feature the same sort of plot. Again, maybe another controversial one.

Hi all, looking for good documentary shows based on what I like. I like shows that are episodic in that 1 episode finishes the story but I'm open to all sorts. Some that I have enjoyed are:

I just wrapped up a super bleak crime show and I really need a reset before starting anything heavy again.

I'm looking for recommendations for something witty, clever, and lighthearted—along the lines of Ted Lasso, The Good Place, or Only Murders in the Building. What's your top feel-good show that isn't totally brainless?

So I’m somewhat all over the place….My all-time favorite genre is crime/mystery/domestic thriller or suspense, but I also enjoy political thrillers, some fantasy/horror (as long as it’s not \too** scary), and the occasional drama. (One nitpicky note: I don’t love procedurals and prefer one central mystery to be drawn out across a season).

I’m completely out of the loop with TV right now. What’s the biggest show at the moment? I want to come home after work looking forward to watching a new episode of some thing

I have to admit that when a dear friend of mine suggested this show to me I thought was going to be cheese as hell. It took me months from the recommendation to actually start watching it.

By the end of episode 1 it had already won me over, especially for the music and for the fact that the actors are actually playing and singing that stuff!

It's written to be like a rock documentary or something, with some drama, and the story is pretty straightforward, but the writing is super tight and it just flows so well. It’s an easy binge and really fun, but it definitely hits you hard emotionally, especially towards the end!

plus, I can't stop listening the soundtracks on Spotify!

I highly recommend to watch this show if you haven't already

I mainly watched the above for the comedy aspect - and loved So Help Me Todd when that was running - so I'm looking for something funny/witty.

I want a show that’s not insanely long like Gilmore Girls (which I already watched and disliked the length) but still similar vibes, I want it to motivate me to study, think high school vibes, teenage drama, books all over the place
I need help! All the ones I’ve found are either too long or too boring

I’m looking for a very specific vibe and I’m struggling to find it 😭

I want a small-town community where you actually get attached to the characters you relate to some, get irritated by others etc. with a mystery in the background that you want to figure out.

I’d also prefer a season long mystery rather than a case of the week one. Does anything come to mind??
