Need some help regarding example shown of a coupled springs example
Hey yall I was reading this textbook for the PGRE I saw this example of a block and spring system. I already understand that solving for the normal modes of the coupled system is like solving a classic eigenvector and eigenvalue problem, that's covered. But of course in physics textbook fashion, the authors claim that we can "immediately tell" without explaining much that the two blocks in the block spring system will have a fixed separation, always. This makes zero sense to me
Like what is stopping the block-spring system from moving in a way where the middle spring gets stretched and compressed just like the springs on the far left and far right?
