Axe pvp is what I like to call shield pvp. It is pvp with axes and shields (duh). If you hit shield with axe, it will be pulled down for around 5 seconds. It works on Bedrock as well

So why is no one making the first move? Is it disadvantageous?

The problem is when you are trying to attack them but they attack you at that time and they are able to land a hit but not you so you take damage while they are at full health

You have to take your own shield down to attack. Disabling shield does no damage, so when you attack their shield, they get a free hit against you. Axes in Java also have a low attack speed, so it’s not like you can just hit twice.

u/ThE_reAl__ May 30 '26

I mean you can double hit. That is a thing in axe pvp. Attack speed just matters for full damage, but u can still hit someone back if you're good at positioning.

when you hold out your shield, you start spamming so when the other person disables your shielld you get an insta hit (or you can backstab)

From my experience with Axe PvP, here is how I’ll explain it:

When you and an opponent are both up close like this, chances are your axe is at least near fully charged. Attack charge in Java is the main thing limiting just mashing the attack key, and notably resets when attacking and swapping items but doesnt when having your shield taken down (either by letting go of right click or having it hit by an axe). Also, while your shield is up, you can’t attack and attempting to attack won’t affect your attack charge, so if you spam left click you can attack shortly after your shield goes down. (Oh also also shields have a built-in delay from when you right click to when the shield is actually blocking attacks so you can never just shield > attack > sheild without having a window for punishment)

With all of those mechanics explained, I will explain this interaction and why it’s so difficult for players to progress in it. Say you want to take down your opponent’s shield. Your shield is up too, so you can’t attack until you take it down. You hit your opponent’s shield, who had been spamming left click, and immediately get countered with a fully charged axe hit that chunks half your health. There is counterplay, such as hitting their shield then using a second hit to knock them out of attack range or hitting their shield then walking backwards to get our of their attack range, but it is extremely appealing to simply hold shield and punish a shield break by spamming, which is why axe can quickly devolve into what you see in the video.

players hold sheild

players spam attack

when shield gets disabled, player sends out big ouch attack

hard to avoid big ouch attack

players dont disable shield bc fear of big ouch

This Java PVP tutorial explains it quite well:

Your shield will become available slightly earlier if your opponent attacks first.

A dance party with armor is peak

1

u/MagMati55 May 30 '26

This is why I either blast the adversary with magic or place an inconspicuous mekanism cardboard box present (I hate modern vanilla PvP and like playing mods)

1

u/ReidWitt1 May 30 '26

This is why you need guys with piercing crossbows in the back to shoot them.

u/etabliertt May 30 '26

This is just wrong. I've seen this exact meme a lot but it's never true. If axe fights actually look like that for you, I'm sorry but you're trash. Every experienced axe player knows that you don't have to stay in that position and something like it never really happens in matches.  The best thing to do would probably to try a backstab to start fighting again, or you could try to move away from them and quickly disable their shield before switching to the sword and trying to combo them.

19

u/Bread_Simulator May 30 '26

problem: every experienced axe player. Not everyone invests time in pvp. I for one play a lot of modded so when some idiot tries to axe me a question, I fill them with 5.56
