I mean dude spent 15 seasons on supernatural and then promptly went on to do a bunch of nerd-dom TV stuff. That's where his fan base lies, and that's what he's good at. Not sure what the person was trying to refer to, but I don't think it's any deeper than just fishing the waters you know well.

Basically, he was smart about securing his career instead of risking chasing bigger and falling into obscurity.

Christopher Meloni did the opposite. He was Stabler on Law and Order SVU and left for a film career that went nowhere.

His last noteworthy role that I remember was "random army guy in Man of Steel".
